Hi everyone!
In a world that demands urgency and productivity, what might it mean to pause—and listen to the ocean? That’s why we’re excited to announce our July book selection: Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals by Alexis Pauline Gumbs.
This meditative and poetic offering invites us to learn from marine mammals about survival, presence, care, and community. Through forty short reflections, Gumbs asks us to reimagine our relationship to ourselves and each other—not as individuals trying to stay afloat alone, but as part of something vast, interconnected, and wise.
We’re especially excited that our member Rosa will be hosting and facilitating this month’s conversation.
Book Description:
In Undrowned, Alexis Pauline Gumbs brings Black feminist thought into conversation with the daily practices of marine mammals. With grace and insight, she examines the survival strategies of whales, dolphins, seals, and manatees as metaphors for how we—as Black people, as feminists, as humans—might also breathe through crisis, rest amidst violence, and stay in loving community.
It’s a book about listening. About refusing to harden. About floating when the world wants to pull us under.
This book is for anyone seeking to be more present, more tender, and more connected in a time that asks us to do the opposite.
Location: Off Broadway in Downtown Oakland (details will be shared via email to RSVPs, make sure your emails are on )
As always, all are welcome—whether you've finished the book or just want to be in community. Bring your thoughts, your questions, your softness, and your snacks if you feel moved. We can't wait to see you.
