What we’re about
The Sierra Club is America's oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization. The mission of the Sierra Club is to Explore, Enjoy, and Protect the Planet. The Cape Fear Group of the Sierra Club serves members of Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Pender and Robeson Counties. You do not need to live in one of these counties to join our Meetup, and unless specifically noted, you do not need to be a Sierra Club member to attend one of our Meetups, events, and/or outings. We welcome anyone and everyone and would love to see you at one of our events!

Start your day with a stroll by the sea with the Cape Fear Sierra Club on August 16, 2025! This is the second event in our new bi-monthly “Walk With a Purpose” program, intended to complement a moderately challenging walk/hike with a communitarian or educational experience.
What: A brisk walk along the beach from the Fort Fisher sea wall (which runs parallel to the parking lot) to the Kure Beach Pier, one of the oldest fishing piers on the Atlantic coast. Outbound, we’ll observe stunning ocean views, coastal foliage, and a variety of birds; on the return, we’ll collect beach litter. The round trip distance is 5 miles. When: August 16, 2025 at 7:30 a.m. sharp. NOTE that this is weather and tide dependent.
Where: Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, The 1921 Fort Fisher Monument on Battle Acre Rd. Kure Beach, NC 28449 (free admission and parking). Look for the green Sierra Club banner and the walking group near the monument.
Conditions: Low tide is at 7:30am, so the sand should be well packed. Duration is about 90 minutes, walking at an average pace of 3.2 mph. Rain, excessive wind, and/or extreme tides will cancel.
Bring Supplies: Water, walking shoes, a head cover, sunscreen, a trash bag, and gloves (optional).
Other: Participants not able to keep up with the group, may be asked to sign out from the outing. Those wanting to leave the outing early, please see the group leaders to let them know you are leaving the group.
Level: Moderate (Brisk w/uneven terrain)
