FREE Outdoor Trips From London

This walk follows the Hertfordshire way through ancient woodlands over a gently undulating and tranquil terrain. It features a nature reserve, diverse wildlife, rich history and will also take in a sculpture trail.

Meet at Liverpool street rail station outside the ticket office.

Outward travel: Get the 09:42 train from London Liverpool Street to Broxbourne arriving 10:15. Buy a super off peak day return to Hertford East, the cost should be £7.35 with a network railcard or groupsave ticket. Don't buy a return to Broxbourne it is more expensive, and break of journey is allowed.

Walk starts at 10:15 from Broxbourne station.

• Walk ends at approx 16:30 at Broxboune station.

As the walk is limited to 50 the amount of people that can join so please only rsvp if you are 100% sure you will attend.

Bring a packed lunch. Pub stop for lunch but there might not be time to order food. Due to the timing of daylight, pace will be brisk 3mph and it might be quite muddy so wear appropriate footwear!

Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel - this gives everyone the freedom and choice. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered.
As most of our trips are confirmed or postponed very close to the event date - heavily depending on the weather forecasts - we advise not to buy this until the last minute. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.

Canary Winter Lights festival is the largest of its kind in London, transforming Canary Wharf with over 20 stunning installations, leaving the dark winter eveningsk aglow. The spectacle showcases light art and interactive installations by some of the most innovative light artists across the globe.
The event will involve a short walk of about 2-3 miles around the Canary wharf Estate with a short break to view each artwork. As the venue will be quite crowded the pace is likely to be quite slow, so you should be OK with this.
Afterwards we will go for drinks at the nearby Wetherspoons Ledger building pub.

As the group size is limited to 50 people, please only rsvp if you will definitely attend.

Walk start: 18:30 from Canary wharf underground station.

Edmond Halley not only discovered what his comet is, an object orbiting the Sun; he mapped the southern sky's stars from St Helena as his predecessor as Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed had done for the northern hemisphere; calculated distances between the Earth, Sun and other planets; and supported and funded publication of Newton's universal laws of motion. Add to that, theorizing Earth as formed of a crust, an inner core, with something in between; and sailing the oceans exploring and measuring magnetism.

The day's story begins in the 12th Century, when Lesnes Abbey was founded among the hilly woods of oak, chestnut and birch, which remain pristine above Henry VIII's gothic remake of the abbey itself.

A short hop from Lesnes we reach the Thames' tidal estuary. This is Gallions Reach - at Tripcock Ness stands the nearest lighthouse to London and the farthest point at which a ship sailing inland may have its anchor hanging loose 'a-cock', not hauled in 'a-trip'.

Upstream, Woolwich Dockyard is a historical gem charting the age of sail, including the Dial Arch pub in an 18th-C Royal Arsenal building. A fitting place to drop anchor awhile.

Then dead ahead to Greenwich, to Halley's workplace in the Royal Observatory, where unknowns of the universe became known; before paying a visit to Halley's little corner of that universe.

The Watch House in nearby Lewisham marks the journey's end, with plenty to contemplate over well earned refreshment.
