THIS HIKE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS! Please do not RSVP unless you can hike at the moderately brisk pace of 18 minutes a mile for 5-6 miles. In order to promote a good aerobic workout, there will be VERY FEW STOPS along the trail. NO DOGS ALLOWED.
West Hills County Park is one of the most scenic parks and best hiking venues on Long Island. Its many rolling hills add a modest challenge unlike the mostly flatter areas of mid-western Suffolk. Its multiple trails allow a creative hike leader to mix and match them to create a novel and interesting exercise for attendees.
We will be hiking several different trails in the park. In addition to making the obligatory trek to the Jayne's Hill rock, we will also explore the lesser known trails. The hike will be 5-6 miles.
DIRECTIONS:
Take the Northern State Parkway to Route 110 in Melville (Exit 40 South). Make a right and head South on Route 110. Turn right onto Old Country Road and head West. Make a right turn (less than .2 miles) at the first traffic light onto Sweet Hollow Road. Be sure to stay close to the right side of the road and be careful since Sweet Hollow becomes a one lane road. In less than a 1/4 mile you will see the large Dog Park parking lot on your right. We meet there.
Be sure to bring appropriate footwear and hiking accessories, as well as water, and food if you like.
Hope you can join us for a scenic and vigorous hike at West Hills on Wednesday, April 23rd!!
