07913 148821 - Help restore the Way & Arun canalKirdford village hall, Billingshurst
A volunteering weekend on the Wey & Arun canal in the Surrey/Sussex area in collaboration with the Waterway Recovery Group.
You'll join a friendly and experienced group of volunteers who work round the UK to restore canals and other waterways. We work on a range of tasks but this weekend is likely to involve mostly construction skills in a semi rural part of Surrey or Sussex. All training and safety equipment will be provided but you must provide your own steel toe cap footwear.
Accommodation
We will be staying in a village hall as a mixed group so you will need to bring a mat/camp bed and sleeping bag. You can also join for the day if you prefer not to stay overnight.About WRG
The Waterway Recovery Group helps maintain and restore canals and waterways round the UK, often using heritage construction skills. While our winter work tends to be tree felling and removal, in warm weather we get involved with construction tasks such as using excavators and bricklaying. As the London branch we do weekend events about once every 4-5 weeks within about 3 hours drive of London. We work on the W&A canal several times a year, usually staying in or around Wonersh or Kirdford. It's a friendly team and we have a strong safety record.Costs
Food will be provided and we can cater for dietary requirements (just tell us in advance). A volunteer will cook - food is £15 including cooked breakfast, sandwich lunch on site, and a dinner Saturday evening. If you get a van lift from London Waterloo we ask for a contribution of up to £15 for fuel.
You will need steel toe cap boots which usually cost around £25 (Screwfix is a good place to buy these). Bring a sleeping bag and camp bed or mat for 'indoor camping' in a village hall/scout hut. You'll also need some sturdy clothes that can get muddy or torn. You should have a good standard of fitness but we will work with you to accommodate any physical needs.Timetable
Friday - van lift available from London Waterloo, or meet us at the village hall from about 7pm. Some members will visit the pub (this is optional). Please make your own arrangements for dinner - most people bring sandwiches for their journey.
Saturday - Cooked breakfast 8am, we work onsite 9-5. We have sandwich lunch on site, then a cooked meal in the evening. Pub is again optional.
Sunday - Cooked breakfast 8am, sandwich lunch on site, we work onsite from 9am usually finishing by 4pm.
