This is classic Florida paddling! The Silver River generally affords the most reliable wildlife viewing anywhere near here. Yep, this is where the monkeys are. No guarantees, but we usually do see them.
When you arrive at Silver Springs State Park, look for Ryan (kayak rental guy) and his large white van with a kayak trailer at the FAR END of the main parking lot. You do NOT go into the main park (big park gates, don't go there).
IF YOU BRING YOUR OWN YAK, THE "SHUTTLE ONLY" CHARGE IS $10, NO RESERVATIONS NEEDED.
IF YOU ARE RENTING: Arrive at 9:00 to get your reserved kayaks.
RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE IN ADVANCE ONLINE TO RENT.
Go to www.silverriverkayakrentals.com to make your rental reservations.
Directions are simple. Click on "Kayak Rentals." Click on "BOOK NOW" to make reservations for April 8th at 9:00 am,. Rental cost is $55.00 plus booking charge, which includes a shuttle back to Silver Springs Park.
Paddles in the water around 10:00 am.
The total paddle time is about 2.5 hours.
There is also a $2.00 park entrance fee (one person in a vehicle) and a $4.00 launch fee.
The one-way paddle is about 5.5 miles total with the current all downstream to the takeout at Ray's Wayside Park just off Rte 40. The shuttle picks us up there.
We paddle with the current, so this is an easy paddle suitable for paddlers with some experience. It is NOT for fast paddlers! All are expected to stay with the group. We will be paddling at a relaxed pace enjoying the scenery and photographing the wildlife you'll see in the nooks and crannies along the river. This is for kayakers with some experience to intermediate level paddlers.
Bring a hat, snack and something to drink. PFD'S must be worn for this event.
It is expected that all those joining us will be familiar with their own abilities AND limitations, exercising sound judgment as to their personal fitness level for this outing. We will be in a wilderness area inaccessible to emergency services.
If you are not feeling at the top of your game, do not sign up for this outing. Covid is here to stay.
