See all- MLK Day - Eco "Walk and Learn" at Walnut Springs Parkwalnut springs park, State College, PA
Sierra Club Moshannon Group and NVEC (Nittany Valley Environmental Coalition) invite you to learn about the important environmental work happening in our community. Walnut Springs Park is located in State College Borough and offers the casual hiker a nice trail through the woods, along a stream and through a wetland. In the past few years, Greg Williams with PA Interfaith Power and Light, has brought numerous groups into the park to volunteer to get rid of invasive shrubs from the area (specifically privet and invasive honeysuckle) and plant native trees in its place. The Borough received money from the US Fish and Wildlife Service to do restoration work on the wetlands starting in 2025. Learn about these great projects as we walk through this amazing park in State College.
This will be an easy walk along the trails in Walnut Springs Park. The trail is fairly flat with both gravel and dirt trails. There is no bathroom at the park, but there is a bathroom across the street at Lederer Park. We will talk about invasive species, the wetlands restoration project and pick up any trash we see (optional). The walk will be between one to two miles long, depending on the trail conditions that day. Street parking is available on Walnut Spring Lane, about a quarter of a mile from the intersection of University and Westerly Parkway.
