What we’re about
Mountain Cathedrals is a group for people who would like to encounter God and build community in our sacred outdoor wilderness spaces. As we join together for monthly day hikes on the third Saturday of each month, we will build elements of worship (scripture, prayer, and Holy Communion) into the hiking experience, allowing our ancient Christian traditions and our current hiking and outdoor spaces to work together to point to the presence of God among us.
Mountain Cathedrals is a ministry of St. John's United Methodist Church, and hikes will be led by a United Methodist clergyperson. We are, however, committed to building community and connections across denominational lines, and as such, we are open and sensitive to the faith traditions and backgrounds of all participants.
Mountain Cathedrals is a re-birth of the former Worship in the Wilderness meetup.

Mountain Cathedrals Hike - El Malpais, Zuni-Acoma Trail
St. John's United Methodist Church (meet in east parking lot to carpool to trailhead), 2626 Arizona NE, Albuquerque, NM, USWhere ever you go, there you are. On this cairn-to-cairn hike, that saying is especially true because we will have to keep reconnoitering our next steps. Perhaps the ragged landscape around us will also let us progress on our inner journeys and perceive something new of God’s plans for us.
Logistics: Meet at the St. John's UMC (Albuquerque) east parking lot at 8:00 a.m., or at the trailhead (Acoma Zuni East Trailhead – contact organizer for details) at 9:30. Plan to be back at the parking area by 3:00 and St. John's by 4:30. The hike is moderate (out-and-back, about 5 miles round trip), but it includes some rough footing. We will be walking directly across the McCarty's lava flow. Bring good hiking footwear, sun protection, lunch, water, a parka, trekking poles (recommended), and enthusiasm!
Please join us for this hike of meditation, wilderness, and time apart from our normal schedules.
