What we’re about

Welcome to Outdoor Afro Grand Rapids!

From all of us who share community here, we're thrilled you've joined us. Every healthy community has basic norms, expectations, and rules of engagement. Here's ours:

This Space Centers Black People

In this space, Black outdoor experiences, voices, history, and content are centered. Also - we say "Black" a lot. Are there non-black allies in this space? Yes. Will they be centered? No. Does this space exist to “teach” non-black people about systematic or interpersonal racism? No. There are many other groups that exist with educating allies as the primary function.

If the amplification of black joy and humanity makes you uncomfortable - this group will be a restless experience for you. We recommend another forum or creating your own.

Outdoor Afro is a national non-profit founded in Oakland, CA in 2009. We are a community that supports reconnecting African-Americans with natural spaces through recreational activities such as camping, hiking, biking, skiing, birding, fishing, gardening, and highlighting Black history in the spaces where we recreate.
