What we’re about
PATC hikes are an opportunity to understand the club and its important trail maintenance work. You do not need to be a PATC member to hike with us, but we hope you will consider joining after getting to know us. Come join us on the trails!
(PATC hikes are conducted by trained hike leaders. The hikes offer various levels of difficulty and distance).

ABOUT PATC
The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) is a 100% Volunteer-Supported 501c3 non-profit formed in 1927 for the purpose of building and maintaining the Appalachian Trail (AT), a 2190-mile footpath from Maine to Georgia, the longest hiking-only trail in the world.
We are the Trail Guardians for over 1000 miles of trails in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia & Virginia, including 240 miles of AT. Our territory begins in Central Pennsylvania at Pine Grove Furnace, continues thru Maryland & West Virginia to Harpers Ferry and extends into the mid-point of Virginia, including the Shenandoah National Park. In addition, we maintain other regional trails, for a total of over 1,000 miles of trails, thousands of acres of land and more than 80 shelters and cabins.

ABOUT THE HIKE PROGRAM
The first stated purpose of PATC is "to support and encourage the ... proper recreational use of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and other trails". This is done partly through the sponsorship of hikes on trails in PATC's area and on other trails.
The club has a wide-ranging hiking program which includes local area hikes and excursions into other geographical areas. Hikes can range from short, close-in day hikes to extended excursions. Hikes can be for physical conditioning, social interaction, nature walks, history lessons, to reach a viewpoint, or any of a number of purposes. The club encourages a wide variety of hikes, and provides training and support to hike leaders.

Schaeffer Farms, 14800 Schaeffer Rd, Boyds, MD, USSchaeffer Farm Trails, Germantown, MD: A Moderate 10.5-Mile Hike
Seneca Creek State Park spans over 6,300 acres, following the course of Seneca Creek as it winds toward the Potomac River. The park is renowned for its recreational opportunities—boating on Clopper Lake, picnicking, and over 50 miles of hiking and biking trails. Schaeffer Farm, situated on the park’s northern edge near Germantown, is a network of interconnected trails that trace their origins to former farmland, now reclaimed by nature and transformed for outdoor recreation.
The 10.5-mile hike is typically completed as a loop, beginning and ending at the parking area off Schaeffer Road. The trail is well-marked, with various color-coded segments—White, Red, Yellow, Blue, and Orange. Schaeffer Farm is beloved for its diversity. The hike meanders through mature hardwood forests, past wildflower-strewn meadows, along the edges of open fields, and over wooden bridges that cross gentle creeks. We will also hike on a trail thorough the middle of a corn field. Despite the distance of 10.5 miles, the elevation gain of only 800 feet makes is a moderate hike. One caution. The trail is popular with bikers, so we will be sharing the trail.
Bring a snack or lunch to enjoy along the way.
Dogs are allowed on the Schaeffer Farm Trail, but they must be on a leash at all times. Please be advised, though, that some of the trails are narrow and we will be sharing them with bikers.

Woodstock Brewhouse, 123 E Court St,, Woodstock, VA, USJoin the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) - Blue Ridge Chapter Book Club for our monthly meeting where we will read The Lost City of Z then meet up at Woodstock Brewhouse to discuss the book.
The Lost City of Z by David Grann is a true-life adventure story that chronicles the life and disappearance of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who vanished in the Amazon jungle in 1925 while searching for an advanced ancient civilization he called "Z". The book interweaves Fawcett's obsessive quest with Grann's own contemporary journey into the Amazon to uncover the fate of the explorer and the forgotten history of the region, revealing that Fawcett's theories about sophisticated Amazonian cultures were, in fact, largely accurate.
