What we’re about
Almost every Sunday (please check our calendar) we offer a class on meditation instruction and practice. The class generally practices "calm abiding" (shiney/samatha) meditation, which is the art of calming the mind as taught in Tibetan Buddhism. We also investigate "insight" (lag-tong/vipashyana), the meditation practice that enables deeper insight into the nature of self and the world to positively transform our relationship with ourselves and with others. No experience is needed. All are welcome, including you.
We follow the teachings of the Palyul Lineage of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Visit our website at http://www.palyuldc.org/

Our monthly Book Study Group meets today, Jan. 12th, to discuss The Sun My Heart, by the renowned Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. The book is about the author’s reflections on mindfulness, concentration and insight. Its stated purpose is to “give you small moments of joy at any time.” Nhat Hanh (1926 – 2022) grew up in Vietnam. In 1982 he established the famous Buddhist community known as “Plum Village” in the south west of France. He was a global spiritual leader, artist, poet, and peace activist, renowned for his powerful teachings and bestselling writings on mindfulness and peace. This meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12th, 2025. Our Book Study Group meets every month as part of our Sunday morning program and is open to all who are interested.
In our weekly classes, we explore the richly variegated jewel that is Tibetan Buddhist doctrine or liturgy, including a short meditation or two. There is plenty of time for Q-&-A. All who are reading this message are warmly invited.

“The Tibetan word 'jin-lab' is loosely translated as ‘blessings.’ Jin-lap transforms our whole being—our body, our speech, the way we think, how we understand phenomena, and the way we relate to ourselves and the world. Ultimately, however, what jin-lap does is to break the shell of our ego and force us to see the true nature of our minds. Among the many other causes and conditions, in the Vajrayana it is the guru who is considered the most important and indeed supreme cause for doing all of the above.” -Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, “Ocean of Blessings” (p. vii)
“If we had pure perception from the beginning, we wouldn’t need to train in it. However, at present our mind is filled with disturbing emotions, our way of perceiving is very obscured, and we lack pure perception. Therefore, we need to train in pure perception.” -His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, “Ocean of Blessing” (pp. 9-11)

Kamalashila, the great meditation master, wrote, “The mind that is not established in equipoise is incapable of knowing reality.” Taming the mind through meditation is simple in theory, but very difficult in practice, akin to taming a wild elephant. In today’s meeting (Jan. 26th) we discuss the basic techniques of calming the mind to render it serviceable. Please Join Us!
