Richmond Audubon Society Meetup

March 8
Cumberland Marsh Natural Area Preserve.
Meet esteemed birder Ewa Greene at 7:45 am.
Cumberland Marsh is in New Kent Co. It consists of marshes on the edges of the Pamunkey River, agricultural fields, and a wooded area. We will be looking for waterfowl, raptors, owls (if we are lucky), overwintering birds, and possibly some early migrants. The loop trail we will walk is about 3 miles long. Use GPS for the meeting spot - Vandell Preserve at Cumberland Marsh. Follow the road all the way to a small parking area, going straight where the Cumberland Rd. veers right towards the Children’s Hospital.

Tuckahoe Creek Park.
Meet sensational birder Diane Jadlowski at the picnic tables at noon. This is a 1/3-mile boardwalk with very easy walking. Picnic tables and benches are available for resting. Parking is available on the street (please don't block driveways). The boardwalk is ADA accessible, so everyone can enjoy this nature experience. Trips are 2 hours long.

March 15
Dutch Gap.
Meet Academe Award-winning birder Wes Teets at the Henricus Historical Park parking lot at 8:00 am. This is one of our premier birding locations, with a great variety of habitats supporting myriad bird species. Expect 2 to 3 miles of slow-paced walking on paved roads and gravel trails, with several spots to stop and observe birds. We typically spend around 3 hours here. If the gate is closed, park at the boardwalk parking area right before the gate.

Dixie Sommers

Dixie Sommers became a serious birder after moving back to the Washington area from her native Ohio in 2006, adding to her long interest in nature photography and travel. She is a regular e-Bird user and enjoys using photography to help learn the birds, and sharing her photos on www.ddpix.smugmug.com.
In addition to favorite places in Virginia, her recent birding travels include Thailand, Chile, Alaska, New Zealand, Colombia, and Mexico. Dixie serves on the board of the Virginia Society of Ornithology, where she is treasurer and has various roles related to publishing the 2 nd Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas. She is a member of the Northern Virginia Bird Club and the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, and board member for the Friends of Dyke Marsh. She lives in Alexandria and retired from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics after a long career of counting jobs and workers. Now she counts birds!
