Dying is hard. Watching someone we love die is hard. And it’s so much harder when we don’t have any preparation or guidance for how to get through this.How do we care for a dying loved one beyond their medical needs? What do we say to them, how do we prepare? How do we prepare for our own dying?
We are left scared and alone, awkwardly trying to keep ourselves and our loved ones cheerful and optimistic.We avoid saying “death” or “dying” because we think it’s too upsetting.
We don’t know how to get through this, and wait helplessly for the end.
In this session, end-of-life doula Kim Foreman, a certified doula with experience as a hospital lay chaplain and a hospice volunteer, will walk us through how we can make dying the sacred, honored passage that it is with many other cultures.
With some role-play and examples, Kim will give us some specific things we can do and ways to talk about what we and our loved ones are going through. She will also talk briefly about the new field of death doulas, and how they can help with this difficult transition.
