Fall Chamber Orchestra Concert
Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony
This concert features one of the best-known symphonies in the canon, Dvořák’s “New World” symphony, which premiered at Carnegie Hall in December 1893. To say it was an unqualified success would be an understatement. Thunderous applause obligated the composer to stand and bow after each movement. The program also features Canadian composer, Mathieu Lussier’s award-winning composition Bassango – the title neatly sums up the piece: it’s a tango for bassoon! Aequora was written by Icelandic composer María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir and is her first composition for orchestra. Its title comes from a Latin word describing the surface of a calm ocean.
