What we’re about
While this group is primarily focused on hiking, we also enjoy other forms of outdoor fun such as canoeing, biking, kayaking, camping and backpacking.... and a variety of special events including concerts, beach parties, museum, garden, art and holiday walks.
Our success is based in part on our ability to increase the fun factor of outdoor events, often including a social activity such as picnics that include food and beverage. Our organizers also design conditioning hikes that are intended to enhance aerobic fitness and endurance. Our group has peaked virtually all the major mountains in Southern California, including Mt. Whitney. We strive to offer the most fun and scenic outdoor activities available to residents of Orange County.... events that are both in and out of area.
Our group is diverse, including young/middle/senior ages, singles and couples, and a mix of people with differing racial/ethnic/cultural/religious/political backgrounds. The unity of the Sunset Hikes Meetup centers on our shared love of fun, outdoor activities.
We do NOT ask for donations to support our administrative costs or charitable pursuits, however we do ask that you actively and enthusiastically participate in our events. So come on out! Make new friends, get some exercise, and enjoy the great outdoors. We are all about having fun!
Check out the "Our Calendar" tab for a schedule of upcoming activities. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon....
We welcome you to the Sunrise to Sunset Hiking family!

ABOUT THE GYPSUM CANYON WILDERNESS: This park opened on November 14, 2023 and contains 6 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding and multiple lookout points with views of the Santa Ana Mountains. The area also features prehistoric rock formations of cobble and sandstone bluffs believed to have formed 16 to 20 million years ago. Some of the protected animals are mule deer, red-tailed hawks, California gnatcatchers, and bobcats. There are oak and sycamore trees, and California poppies during spring. Exploration is only available during special access days and scheduled programs.
ABOUT THE HIKE: We are planning an out-and-back hike on Oven Canyon Road and GC Trail 1 to the lookout point on top of a hill with a summit of 930 feet. We start and end at 460 feet. Restrooms are available at the trailhead staging area. The hike will begin at 10:05 AM.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From the 91 Freeway: (1) exit Gypsum Canyon Road and head south, (2) follow Gypsum Canyon Road approximately 0.2-mile, (3) continue across Santa Ana Canyon Road, and (4) head straight to the staging area, entry gate.
From Santa Ana Canyon Road: (1) take Santa Ana Canyon Road east, (2) turn right on Gypsum Canyon Road, and (3) head straight to the staging area, entry gate.
From the 241 North Toll Road, take either: (1) 91 east and exit at Green River Road to turn around, or (2) 91 west and exit at Weir Canyon Road/Yorba Linda Blvd. to turn around. Then, exit Gypsum Canyon Road and head south, follow Gypsum Canyon Road 0.2-mile, continue across Santa Ana Canyon Road, and head straight to the staging area, entry gate.
