Place Based Learning in the Garden: Connecting the School Garden to the Local Community
Place-based learning is an educational approach that uses the local community and environment as a framework for teaching. This class will explore how you can harness the power of place-based learning in the garden to create meaningful, real-world educational experiences for students.Tonia Scherer will share ways to connect students to their local environment through garden projects that leverage community and enrich their understanding of regional plants, history, and culture. Dean Gunderson will discuss crops that were domesticated in the St. Louis area, such as sunflowers and squash, as well as those that were introduced from Mesoamerica, such as corn, beans, and other important wild edibles that have been used for thousands of years.

- Foliage & Fire: Chili & Cookie Cookoff3001 Virginia Ave, St. Louis, MO
The Seed St. Louis Young Friends and The Orchard on Virginia present the 2nd annual Foliage and Fire Chili and Cookie Cookoff! Funds raised will go to Seed St. Louis and the Orchard on Virginia.
Sample chili and cookies starting at 3:00 p.m. and vote for your favorite by 5:00 p.m. Want to compete? Use the form at the link below to enter! A winner will be announced by 5:30 p.m. Tickets to vote are $1 each or $10 for an arms length. $10 covers a Seed St. Louis pint glass which comes with two complimentary pours of beer from local breweries including 2nd Shift, 4 Hands, Urban Chestnut, Rockwell Brewing Company, and Alpha Brewing. Both cash and cards are accepted.
There will be a variety of games and activities that will keep the kids (and adults) entertained and in the fall spirit. Don't miss this opportunity to savor the best chili, revel in the beauty of fall, and create fun memoires with your loved ones.

The Orchard on Virginia, established in 2014, is a community orchard in the Tower Grove East neighborhood that has sixteen varieties of food-producing trees and shrubs!

Students are far more capable of learning when they feel safe, seen, heard, that they matter, and that they belong. In this presentation, we will share tips and resources for building a culturally relevant garden education program. Abbey Schumacher will discuss ways in which you can grow student curiosity and participation in the garden, engage families, leverage diverse assets in your school community, and create garden spaces that reflect your school’s unique cultural landscape. Dean Gunderson will offer an overview of culturally significant crops from around the world that grow well in the St. Louis region and hold particular educational, artistic, and/or nutritional value for the school garden.
