In this class you will learn the beginning fundamentals of how to draw objects from life. We will go over light and shadow, the value scale, and more! We will learn to work with charcoal and other dry media to create a still life from a curated set of objects. After 2 sessions, you will leave with a completed charcoal drawing on paper!

Caiti Chan is a Sacramento, born and raised artist. She received her BA and MA at Sacramento State University and is a current art resident at Verge Center for the Arts. She has experience teaching many art forms, her specialty being painting and drawing. From teaching art to children, to assisting professors during her college career, she is experienced with a wide audience interested in the arts. Her paintings are process driven and involve experimentation with paint and other materials to create large atmospheric abstractions.

Come and playfully learn the basics of a low tech and innovative painterly printmaking process called monotype. Monotypes are unique prints made by the direct transfer of an image. This easily accessible medium allows both novices and experienced artists of all ages to create finished images in relatively few steps. In this hands-on experience, workshop participants will develop an understanding of fundamental printmaking terms, materials, and inking techniques using non-toxic inks. We will focus on both spontaneous and methodical approaches to the medium. Demonstrations will include the use of the etching press, printing by hand, and experimentation with textures, stencils, and collage materials. In a relaxed atmosphere, with support and encouragement, you will realize your own personal artistic intent and expression of ideas and images.

Have you been clay mold-curious but apprehensive about getting started? Just relax! We’ll take your practice in a new ceramic direction. Molds are simple forms used to help shape, sculpt and build with clay. In this two-day eight-hour workshop, participants will get hands-on experience exploring the processes and options. We’ll demonstrate press molds, drape molds, slump molds and slip-casting with and without plaster. We’ll cover the tools and supplies you’ll need to continue your mold practice. This is a project-based workshop, so you’ll come away with a creation of your own. Start thinking about the possibilities and sign up today.

About the Instructor
Ianna Nova Frisby is a Sacramento art instructor and artist with over 30 years of experience exploring popular and personal themes using ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, found and altered pieces.
She is a founding artist and active member at the Verge Center for the Arts. She earned a BFA in studio art from Humboldt State University and an MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
