What we’re about
This group is for anyone interested in backpacking. ALL skills levels are WELCOME. This group is primarily overnight/multi-day backpacking adventures... with possibly some social gathering for members throughout the year \
\
. . \
. We want everyone who attends our Meetup trips to have a great time! Of course, being sore will inevitably be part of it sometimes ;). So, to help ensure this, there are a couple “ground rules” to follow. \
. . \
. - No drugs permitted on group trips. If anyone is found using these, they will be removed from the group. \
. . \
- Act responsibly/Safety first. Do not put yourself, or others in danger while on group outings. \
. . \
- Be respectful/Courteous. Everyone has different skill levels and/or methods. We all have lots to learn from, and teach others. We can do this in a polite, respectful manner. Acting in a belligerent way towards others will not be tolerated. \
. . \
- Know your capability. Please do not sign up to attend trips that are outside your capability. While we only truly grow when we push ourselves past our “comfort zone”, you should understand which trips you can confidently push yourself to handle, and which ones you should pass on until another time...
- Use and keep your RSVP current. Some trips have a size limit. If you sign up for a trip and for whatever reason cannot make it, please update your RSVP so people on the waitlist can join/attend. No shows on trips may not affect you, but they affect the group, so please keep your RSVP’s current.
There will be trips through out the year of various intensities for different skill levels. The host will give a brief description of each trip and the level of intensity.
ADVANCED/STRENUOUS Trips: These more advanced trips will typically require the host speaking with each of you about the demands of the route.
Let's Have Fun ! So grab your gear, sign up, and let’s hit the trail !!
Upcoming events (4)
See all- Women's Beginner Friendly Backpacking - Mount RogersFox Creek Trailhead Parking, Mouth of Wilson, VA
Please join me for a one night backpacking trip to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Virginia. I cannot promise we will see the wild ponies, but I was just there last weekend (April 5 - 6) and saw many.
We will meet at the Fox Creek Trailhead Parking (link to google map) Saturday morning, hike just under 8 miles and camp at the Thomas Knob shelter on the Appalachian Trail (AT). There is a reliable, clean water source, a privy, and a bear box. You can choose to camp in the shelter or tent camp nearby. Sundays hike will be around 7 miles back to our cars. Expected elevation gain 2,467. Here is a link to the route on AllTrails.
- Regarding RSVPs - For the first 24 hours after trips in this series are posted, only those that were a part of the “planning” zoom meetings will be moved to going. After that folks will be moved to going according to RSVP time (up to ten participants, including myself, for this trip).
- This is cross posted with another meetup. If you are on the waitlist and not getting moved although there appear to be spots left this may be why, but feel free to ask 😊
- Each trip in this series will be posted for two consecutive months to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to attend.
- Also in the interest of allowing as many to participate as possible, attendance will be limited to one of the two identical trips posted.
- I do not expressly prohibit dogs, however, I do ask that if you plan to bring your fur baby you post to the group for everyone's awareness.
- NO COTTON - Please do not wear any cotton or cotton blend clothing. Cotton does not dry. Damp or wet cotton clothing can accelerate the onset of hypothermia, even in Summer. Look for merino wool, wool blends, or synthetic materials.
I expect average pace for this hike to be around 2 mph. **If you know that you cannot currently hike with a full pack at that pace please reach out to me for ideas on how to condition yourself to prepare**.
Here is a link to my suggested packing checklist I hope it works but if not please let me know and I’ll see what I can do: Backpacking Checklist

**Note this hike is being posted in both the Charlotte Piedmont Hiking Club and the Backpacking Western N.C. meetup groups so total attendees will the combination of the 2 postings. Total group size is limited due to BRP rules and discretion of the organizers. I have reserved 3 backcountry campsites so the cost will be $3 each to cover the cost of the sites. Everyone will start on the Waitlist and I will direct message individuals with Venmo instructions. Once payment is received people will be moved to the Going status
Join us as we explore the Rock Castle Gorge trail in southern Virginia along the Blue Ridge Parkway on a 1 night backpacking trip (with the option to car camp on Friday night near the trailhead). The strenuous and rugged nature of the trail along with it's natural beauty reveals part of the reason this trail was given National Recreational Trail status. In the springtime to early summer, nearly 200 varieties of wildflowers are visible along the trail. Information on National Recreational Trails can be found here https://www.nrtapplication.org/trails
The trail starts easy at the entrance to the Rocky Knob Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway and then descends steeply over three miles into the backcountry camping area at the bottom of the gorge along the Rock Castle Creek.
The rest of the trail is a 6-mi ascent back out of the gorge on the return back up to the visitor center. You'll see tunnels of rhododendron and other thick mountain foliage, a splashing stream, and high open meadows.
The entire loop is ~11 miles and the elevations range from 1,700 to 3,572 ft. A few small historic structures are visible along the trail, including a Civilian Conservation Corps camp.
Overall this hike is rated Strenuous given we will be carrying our packs and the elevation gain on Sunday returning to the cars.
Well behaved dogs are welcome.
The campsites have fire rings and bear boxes. There is also a portable toilet at the campground
Alltrails information/map: (Note that the map in Alltrails has a different starting point than we will use. We will park and start at the Rocky Knob Campground information station) Alltrails Info/Map
Detail Plan:
Friday (OPTIONAL) – meet at the Rocky Knob Campground
https://maps.app.goo.gl/1oVJ2A2NZbxtxRHi9
The campground is partially opening up May 3rd for reservations. The A loop looks to be tent only sites with a max of 6 people per site though based on the pictures it looks like at most you can fit 2 to 3 small tents per site. I plan on driving down early on Friday and will add a comment with which site I have reserved Rocky Knob CampgroundSaturday – meet at 11:30am at the parking lot behind the Rocky Knob Visitor/Information center. https://maps.app.goo.gl/E5j8ZYVYgrRqFjoW6
We’ll take a relaxing hike down to the campsite. ~5 miles +700 / -2,200 feet of gain. There will be plenty of time to relax at the campsite and explore the creekSunday – after breakfast we'll break camp and hike the 6 miles back to the cars. +2,000 / -500 feet of gain. Comments on Alltrails indicate parts of the trail on Sunday will be very narrow with steep drop-offs and a couple of sections the trail may be hard to follow so we will keep together at any trail intersections or stream crossings
