What we’re about
Want to reconnect with Earth, eat healthy, get exercise, learn new skills, and meet great people? This is a group for folks interested in sharing knowledge on foraging and living from the land. All skill levels and ages are welcome. We hold a variety of classes for our members. The topics of these classes are chosen based on member interest and range from edible and medicinal plant walks to mushroom growing to cooking classes to tanning and primitive tool making. Fees for these classes will vary.
Due to the nature of our activities, some of our events are held in areas that are not accessible to those with limited mobility. This will be noted in the event description. We never want to exclude anyone from classes due to cost, so if you cannot afford the fee please contact the instructor to discuss barter or work study.
Upcoming events (4)
See all- Edible and Medicinal Plant WalkBishop Lake Beach/Picnic Area, Brighton, MI
Plant walks are excellent learning opportunities for those with beginning to intermediate foraging skills, and for anyone wishing to increase their knowledge of the local flora. Our discussion will include information about identification, methods of harvest, preparation, and use. We will explore the area and chose around 20-25 edible, medicinal, or otherwise useful plants and mushrooms to focus on.
Cost: $25. Pre-pay at https://willforageforfood.square.site/ or bring cash.
Kids under 12 are free with paid adult. Walks are almost never cancelled due to weather (one time in 13 years), so dress accordingly. We will be mostly on trails, no need to dress for bushwhacking. (I often am in shorts and even barefoot.) You may want to bring a notebook, camera, and water. No other gear is required.
- Spring Mushroom Camp900 Twin Lake Dr, Tipton, MI
Welcome spring by immersing yourself in mushroom knowledge!
This camp is designed to be a "mushroom intensive" experience. We will start with an introduction to the basic anatomy, physiology, and ecology of mushrooms. Then we will discuss the major groups of fungi and show you the characteristics used to classify and identify some of the more common groups of mushrooms in our area, with a focus on those that are edible. You will learn about growing mushrooms, and start your own mushroom garden to take home. You will also get to sample a variety of wild mushroom with mushroom dishes at every meal. And, of course, we will spend plenty of time searching for and studying mushrooms in the woods.
