What we’re about
If you enjoy reading and discussing personal development books, please join us! Each month we'll discuss a different personal development book and how the ideas impacted our lives. We'll read both new and classic authors. We'll usually meet at coffeehouse or library.
Lately, we've also been enjoying reading classic literature, philosophy and poetry together.
The group has a $12 annual membership ($1 per month) to help defray Meetup costs, which starts after the trial membership ends. Thank you for supporting our book club!

See all- Four Noble Truths & Schopenhauer: Part 2 (rescheduled to Sunday)Flying Star, Albuquerque, NM
Hi All,
Sorry, I needed to reschedule our meeting to Sunday afternoon. Hope you can come!!We'll continue our discussion of Buddhism and delve deeper into the Buddha's ethical way of living, the Noble Eightfold Path. If time allows, we'll start discussing Schopenhauer's life.
There are many great resources on the Buddha's Eightfold Path. One of my favorites is a freely available book written by Bhikkhu Bodhi, available on Access to Insight. It's a bit technical in some places, but a solid reference.
The Noble Eightfold Path: The Way to End Suffering
If you have time, please overview the 8 factors of the path, such as Right Intention, Right Speech, etc.
Some Food for Thought:
1. If you were prescribing an ethical way of living, what factors would you include? Do you agree with the Buddha's recommendations?2. How easy would it be for modern people to follow the Buddha's Eightfold path? Is this way of life suitable for modern, lay people?
If you weren't at the first meeting, here's what we read last time:
Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta: Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion....................................................................................................................
Our new Fall classic books & topics are here!
Join us for a fascinating dive into great philosophical works addressing the problem of human suffering and how we can mitigate it.
We'll compare and contrast the Buddha's Four Noble Truths & Eight-Fold Path with the works of the Western 19th century philosopher, Arthur Schopenhaur. An East meets West philosophical discussion should be a lot of fun!
Over several meetings, we'll discuss passages of books and articles from both sources. Please read before the meeting if you can. Stay tuned for the reading list to come!
Here's some videos introducing the Four Noble Truths and Schopenhauer. Note: The Four Noble Truths are especially deep and rich, but here's a glimpse of them.

Here is the Amazon description:
"The guide to shortening your execution cycle down from one year to twelve weeks
Most organizations and individuals work in the context of annual goals and plans; a twelve-month execution cycle. Instead, The 12 Week Year avoids the pitfalls and low productivity of annualized thinking. This book redefines your "year" to be 12 weeks long. In 12 weeks, there just isn't enough time to get complacent, and urgency increases and intensifies. The 12 Week Year creates focus and clarity on what matters most and a sense of urgency to do it now. In the end more of the important stuff gets done and the impact on results is profound.- Explains how to leverage the power of a 12 week year to drive improved results in any area of your life
- Offers a how-to book for both individuals and organizations seeking to improve their execution effectiveness
- Authors are leading experts on execution and implementation
Turn your organization's idea of a year on its head, and speed your journey to success."
