This 20km circular walk takes us through the charming countryside of north-west Essex, starting and ending in the historic village of Wendens Ambo, just south of Saffron Walden. As we set off, the landscape unfolds with gentle rolling hills and lush, open farmland. The rural beauty of Wendens Ambo is enhanced by its quaint cottages, ancient church, and the remnants of Roman occupation that hint at its long history.Heading further west, the walk takes us to Arkesden, one of the gems of the area. Nestled in a valley, Arkesden offers some of the most striking scenery of the walk, with its meandering Arkesden Brook and surrounding meadows. The village itself is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, with St. Mary the Virgin Church, a 14th-century structure at its heart.
The route takes us towards Elmdon, where the landscape becomes more undulating, with expansive views over the surrounding fields. Elmdon itself is a picturesque village with a blend of timber-framed houses and more modern dwellings.
We’ll pass the lovely St. Nicholas Church, which dates back to the 13th century and has a distinctive tower. We will also explore some quiet, wooded areas as we head through the countryside, where wildlife such as deer and birds of prey may be spotted.
