🌞 Sunday Brunch & Art: Taberna del Alabardero + Janet Echelman’s “1.8 Renwick” Before It Closes
Hi everyone, (moving this to May 4th as May 11th is Mothers Day!)
Let’s kick off a lovely Sunday with brunch at Taberna del Alabardero, followed by a visit to the Renwick Gallery to see Janet Echelman’s “1.8 Renwick” before it leaves the Grand Salon on Tuesday, May 13.
🍳 Brunch at 11:00 AM – Taberna del Alabardero
We’ll meet at this beautifully classic Spanish restaurant (1776 I St NW, entrance on 18th St) for an elegant brunch full of flavor and European charm. Known for its seafood paella, Iberian tortillas, and sangria, Taberna also offers vegetarian options and is moderately priced with excellent service. Bonus: free garage parking on Sundays right next door!
🎨 12:15 PM – Walk to the Renwick Gallery (5 minutes)
After brunch, we’ll stroll to the Renwick Gallery (Pennsylvania Avenue at 17th Street NW) and spend about an hour soaking in Echelman’s “1.8 Renwick”—a massive, floating, color-shifting sculpture suspended in the Grand Salon. You’re welcome to stretch out on the carpet beneath it and simply breathe.
This immersive piece explores time, tides, and transformation—and it's free to experience. We’ll also have time to browse other works in the museum before heading out for the rest of the day.
Cost:
Free entry to the museum; brunch is pay-your-own.
Please RSVP so we can reserve the right size table. Looking forward to a relaxed, artful Sunday with you!

Renwick Gallery
Pennsylvania Avenue at 17th Street, NW> “What drew me to want to be an artist was, I have always been interested in how the space I’m in changes the way I feel and therefore who I am at any given moment.”—Janet Echelman
Change is coming to the Rubenstein Grand Salon of SAAM’s Renwick Gallery. After Tuesday, May 13, Janet Echelman’s immersive artwork 1.8 Renwick will make way for an exciting new installation. Plan a visit to the Renwick to spend a quiet moment in contemplation or capture an image for your memories.
1.8 Renwick is a site-specific artwork that is part of SAAM’s permanent collection. The colorful fiber and lighting installation examines the complex interconnections between human beings and our physical world and reveals the artist's fascination with the measurement of time. Echelman's knotted meditation contrasts the forces we can understand and control with those we cannot. Dynamically changing lighting casts projected shadow drawings in vivid colors that move from wall to wall, enticing viewers to lie down on the carpet and contemplate the work.
