See all- Two By Chuck PalahniukOdd's Cafe, Asheville, NC
Chuck Palahniuk, most famously known as the author of Fight Club, Choke, Haunted, and numerous other novels, is perhaps lesser known for his mastery of the short story form. However, the subtitle of his collection, Make Something Up, perfectly captures the kind of short stories he writes: they are ones that you cannot unread.
"Escort," a very short story that clocks in at approximately 1,200 words, exemplifies the author's minimalist style, packing an unforgettable punch with masterful economy. Its blunt, confessional nature and journalistic tone make it nearly indistinguishable from nonfiction, a distinct characteristic of Palahniuk's writing.

"Knock Knock," originally published in the December 2010 issue of Playboy, is a funny and horrific take on terminal illness. The story explores themes of familial relationships, the passage of time, and the bittersweet nature of humor in the face of mortality, all told with Palahniuk's inimitable, impossible-to-ignore panache.
