The "Dancing with the Stars" series has sprouted new and enduring interest in partnered social dancing. For more information about dancing in general, as well as local dance bands and venues (many of which offer classes), be sure to check out the info and links below.
If you're new to partnered social dancing, you should know that the emphasis is on "social." It doesn't matter if you're single, married, or otherwise coupled, or what your gender orientation of sexual identification is. People invite other people to dance for 3 minutes of amicable connection on the dance floor. It's all about having fun while getting exercise. While some people prefer to dance only with the person who accompanied them to the dance, they are in the minority. Every accomplished social dancer will agree that the best dancers are those who dance with multiple partners, which will be evident once you have clocked some hours on the dance floor. The social dancers' code is to be polite and kind, and welcoming of new and beginning dancers, or those who may not be as skillful as they are, and to remember that everyone was a beginner at one time.
Since dancing is a sport as well as a social activity, safety and etiquette are paramount to assure a good time at a dance and in class. The best dance teachers will emphasize these areas equally with steps, skill and technique.
