What we’re about
Hello and welcome to the Brighton Book Club. This is a group for all bookworms and avid readers, whatever your preferred choice of fiction. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month.
We select our books by an entirely democratic process. At any moment in time, we have a 'longlist', usually of between ten and twenty books. Twice a year, in April and October, this list is wiped clean and any member attending the meeting that month can add a book to the refreshed list if it meets our criteria (widely available in paperback for less than around £10, no more than approx 450 pages, not the second or later volume of a series where you need to read the earlier ones first). During the week before each regular monthly meeting I email the longlist to those members who have visited the Meetup group online during the previous three months, and ask for three votes by email. The 3 or 4 books with most votes by email go forward onto a shortlist, which is then voted on at the end of the meeting to select the book to be read two months ahead. Unselected books remain on the longlist.

(who all have branches in Brighton and Hove for in person shopping as well as online)All being well we will be meeting upstairs at Freemasons on Western Road, near Palmeira Square.
We have gone back to paying subs for Meetup fees. It's £1 per person per meeting, you can pay in cash on the night or by PayPal to paypal.me/BrightonBookClub - please do not select the 'goods and services' option, as that will incur fees.
We will be refreshing the longlist at this meeting so please come prepared with your choice for the list. The criteria are, roughly, 1) No longer than about 400 pages; 2) widely available in paperback (and, ideally, in e-book format) for less than about £10); 3) not a second or later book in a series (first in a series is fine); 4) if a translation, ideally one with a standard English edition so that we read the same text.
Hope to see you there,
Sarah
