Book Discussion, Curtain Call, Sunday, 20th Apr, 2pm, Alcampo

I love it when we can conbine both books and movies. The book, Curtain Call, has been made into a movie, The Critic. We are reading the book and then seeing the movie a couple of days later.

What is so interesting is that the book and the movie synopsis are so different. Same story but discribed differently for different audiences. Look below and you decide. Is it the same story? It is suppose to be:

The Critic (movie) description from Wikipedia:

"In 1934 London, Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellan) is the film critic for The Daily Chronicle, a tabloid newspaper now owned and run by Viscount David Brooke (Mark Strong) after the death of his father. Erskine delights in writing vitriolic reviews of plays that he believes fall short of his high standards, despite requests from Brooke to tone it down.
After Erskine and his secretary and lover Tom Turner (Alfred Enoch) are arrested for homosexuality..."

Do I have this so wrong? I am not that bright anyway, but these things perplex me.

Well, now that you have read, or even partically read, the book (Curtain Call), now it is time to compare the movie!

After watching the movie we are popping out for drinks and comparing notes.

Joan, The Musical, The Actors Theatre, Sunday, 4th May, at 1.30pm

Lets watch the show and then head for drinks downstairs. It is a fun afternoon out. Work is hard; life is stressful; lets relax and have a good time together.

Storyline of the musical:
72-year-old Joan has it all. A glittering past as a West End dancer, a chocolate-box maisonette in Seven Dials, and fantastic hair. There's one thing she doesn't have, though: the power of self-belief.

Bruised and scorned by her ex-husband's wayward ways, Joan tumbles down a rabbit hole that brings her face to face with her tattered confidence. Can Joan find her way back to the surface? Or is she destined to languish in the depths of self-care hell?

A woman called George....Ali Smith on art, adolescence and gender ambiguity in her time-bending novel......
The first story is about the Italian painter Francesco del Cossa. Del Cossa was a fifteenth century painter from Ferrara. The book follows his story but, touches on the unknown, including his sexuality, which becomes key.
The second part is about a sixteen year old girl called George (actually Georgia). At the start of the section, her mother has died. Her obituary described her as an economist, journalist and Internet guerrilla.
George thinks her younger brother, Henry, is gay and both she and her mother have a (different) female friend with the relationship flirting with lesbianism. George is pedantic and down-to-earth. Her mother is neither so there is a certain amount of mother-daughter clash.
