------ Welcome, Bristol R Users! ------
Welcome back!
As before, the event will be brought to you by Datacove. We are a Data and Analytics Consultancy Team based in Brighton, with experience in founding many well-attended R & Python events. Plus, home of the EARL Conference! We work across multiple streams - from marketing and customer analytics, to bespoke dashboards in Shiny, process automation, and training! :)
We will be supported by the generous team at DeskLodge Bristol. Hosted by Abbie Brookes and Jeremy Horne from Datacove.
------ Talk Information ------
We are overjoyed to be joined by Dr Paul Matthews, Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Creative Technologies at UWE Bristol and leads the MSc in Data Science. His research interests span digital humanities, digital mental health and team / project-based learning in Data Science.
His talk is titled Double Indemnity: Using R with Local Text and Image Models for Movie Genre Analysis. This talk will discuss a project using multimodal embeddings and open source LLM models to map movies from their plot summaries and descriptions. This enabled an analysis of the Noir and Neonoir movie genres - categorisations that have been hotly debated in film genre theory. While this project was focused on a cultural heritage analysis, the talk will present the method as a general purpose route to semantic similarity, content-based recommendation and discovery.
------ General Information ------
Now, refreshments! Drinks and nibbles will be served from 6pm. Talks will commence at 6:30pm/6:45pm and the event will conclude at 8:30pm. The conversation will continue after the event at a local pub TBC – obviously!
If you didn't already have a million reasons to come, there will be (free!) R Merchandise kindly sent by Posit themselves.
Please feel free to register guests and spread the word. We look forward to seeing you all again!
