What we’re about
Welcome to the Silent Book Club Budapest!
This group is for anyone interested in reading a good (e-)book with a cup of coffee/tea and among like-minded people.
Here we don't have a designated book to complete for a deadline, only a pleasant environment for reading your current favourite book, and sharing your impressions of it if you wish.
The meetings are in person, mostly in a Café, with a simple (usually two-hour) agenda:
- half an hour for introduction of you and your chosen book
- one hour for quiet reading
- half an hour for sharing what you have read, impressions, etc.
Whether you are a trained reader, who seeks for community, an eager novice, who wants to make reading a habit, or just someone, who wants to slow down and enjoy the present for a bit, you are at the right place!
So grab your book and join us!

Budapest Silent Book Club – Monthly Book Club: Madonna in a Fur Coat
Altair Teaház, Puskin u. 24, 1088 Hungary, Budapest, HUHello everyone,
Welcome to the Monthly Book Club — the discussion edition of the Budapest Silent Book Club for those who enjoy reading the same book and sharing thoughts together.
Each month, we pick a short book or novella (under 200 pages) — something impactful and easy to finish. The focus is on accessible reads and relaxed, thoughtful conversations.
This time, based on the recent poll in our Goodreads group, we'll be diving into the poignant and evocative Turkish classic: Madonna in a Fur Coat (1943) by Sabahattin Ali. This semi-autobiographical novel follows the life of a young Turkish man in 1920s Berlin who falls deeply in love with a liberated artist named Maria Puder. It's a tender yet tragic exploration of love, loneliness, cultural clashes, and the fleeting nature of human connections, told through a frame narrative that adds layers of mystery and introspection.
🕕 Time: 19:00–21:00 – Group discussion about the book (no silent reading hour this time)
📍 Location: Altair TeaházI’ll bring a few discussion prompts, but everyone’s thoughts are welcome. Whether you loved the book, found it challenging, or didn’t manage to finish — you’re invited.
If you want to have your say on the next book, join the poll in our Goodreads group!
