Sports Photography Workshop
Sunday, January 19, 12:00pm-5:00pm
Optional: Tuesday, January 21, 7:00-8:00pm online
$99 Art Center Members/$125 Non-Members (Plus $10 for the cost of the basketball game)Photographing sports requires an entirely different skillset (and mindset!) from photographing landscapes, still lifes, or portraits! From noon until around 2:30pm we’ll explore an overview of equipment, techniques, and psychology needed to photograph fast moving action.
We’ll then head down Route 132 to the Hyannis Youth and Community Center to photograph the Massachusetts Wolves vs. the Connecticut Flyerz at 3:00 p.m.
On Tuesday from 7:00-8:00pm we’ll have the opportunity to review and discuss your images online via Google Meet.
Needed: DSLR or Mirrorless Camera, longest lens, fastest lens, widest lens, empty storage card(s).
Helpful but not required: folding chair, monopod, extra batteries. (Note: this workshop is not geared toward using cellphones, as these have inherent limitations that make them less than ideal for photographing sports.)
- Basketball Game PhotoshootHyannis Youth & Community Center, Hyannis, MA
Shooting sports is a very different beast from what most of us are usually shooting, and there's a lot that goes in the trash... as many misses as hits. This is a good chance to practice with your continuous focus, continuous advance, and whatever noise reduction software you use.
The Massachusetts Wolves team in the American Basketball Association will be playing at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center on January 12 at 1:00pm, a wonderful opportunity to practice photographing fast moving sports! I was there last year and it's a terrific place to shoot, lots of access and no hassles. The ABA is a semi-pro league, not youth sports, so there are no issues around youth privacy.
Here are some shots from a game I attended last year:

The cost of admission to the game is $10. We can meet at the far end of the court under the Barnstable Golf sign.
Please be sure to RSVP here so that I know if anyone is joining me!
