Sizergh Castle & Scout Scar
Distance: 12.25 miles
Ascent: 1700 feet
Leader: Ronnie WadeThe walk starts in the village of Heversham and takes paths via Mabbin Hall to Levens Bridge. We now walk through Levens Hall & if we are lucky can see the black fallow deer and the herd of rare breed bagot goats. After leaving Levens Park we have to do a short stretch of road walking but will then follow paths to Sizergh Castle. We will not have time to visit the gardens & castle so our route takes by the side of the castle and leads us ultimately onto Scout Scar. We pass Hodgson's Leap where a man tried to ride his horse down Scout Scar whilst he was drunk. Neither survived. At its summit there is a memorial shelter known locally as The Mushroom. Here there is a toposcope outlining all the Central Fells of the lake district which clearly be seen from this viewpoint. After leaving Scout Scar we follow on the ridge to Cunswick Scar and then drop down to our destination at Kendal via the golf course.
