Explore Local Scenery and Snap Great Photos
Interested in discovering scenic spots and sharing photography tips? Join us for a relaxed walk suitable for most, from complete beginners to seasoned pros. We will explore the local landscape, capture memorable shots, and possibly include a coffee stop if time and weather permit.
Where We Will Be: We will explore the riverfront along Cross Park and Chief Charles Ames Park, including the pedestrian bridge on the east and walking west to Portland Avenue. Then we will continue for about four blocks along Portland Avenue to photograph a vintage gas station and a fire station, with a potential coffee break at The Brew. You are free to explore at your own pace or join me for photo tips. Topics will include how to easily double your phone camera's image quality, using leading lines to guide the viewer’s eye and add depth, a VERY budget-friendly wildlife telephoto trick, and how to notice and photograph shadows, reflections, and textures.
Meeting Place: The days are getting longer, and the earlier sunrise lighting may be too early for many of us, so we will instead focus on learning how to capture good images in midday light. Please RSVP and check your messages for possible location changes due to trail or park closures.
Difficulty: The walk should be easy to moderate, covering between 1 to 1.5 miles on mostly flat paths.
Before You RSVP: Read all details. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera or phone, snacks, water, and layers for the weather. If your plans change, update your RSVP so others may attend. We aim for a friendly, inclusive environment. You are invited to share up to three photos afterward on the Meetup page. This is an unpaid gathering; you are responsible for your belongings, your own safety, and the safety of any guests you bring. Respect privacy and avoid shooting from private property without permission, only photograph people who have consented, and be especially mindful of the homeless community’s right to privacy if they are present. The walk is loosely structured, so you can explore on your own or stay with a group. Be aware that the river may be high, and rocks can be slippery, so bringing young children or pets is not recommended. Stay on the trails to avoid poison oak. There may be opportunities for good squirrel photos.
What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, a fully charged smartphone or camera, weather-appropriate layers, cash or card for coffee or treats if desired, snacks and water as needed, and a sense of humor in case the weather changes.
Event Challenge: See if you can take a photo so compelling that others want to copy it. We look forward to seeing you and hope you will share your creativity. Remember to RSVP and stay tuned for updates.
