Classical Music and Wine Appreciation

A mainstay of the concert hall, Schubert’s "Unfinished" symphony has always left the audience with the puzzle: why only two movements? With considerable scholarship, the answer seems to be out there but gaining widespread attention only slowly.

There is a vast difference between playing all the notes in the right sequence and rhythms, and making that into actual music. As pianist Vladimir Horowitz once said, “The music is behind those dots. You must search for it …”

A composer can go only so far; much of what turns those dots into music is unwritten, left to the performer to create. Only then does it become music.

Join our host Laura Young, a former Washington Post music reviewer, to listen to different performances of several piano works. You’ll describe and evaluate the pianists’ choices in terms of such interpretive devices as tempo, phrasing and the ability to create atmosphere, and then you’ll ultimately choose which artist does it best.
