- Learn Little Plants at Reinhardt Redwood Regional ParkOakland's Canyon Meadow Staging Area, Redwood Regional Park, Oakland, CA
Led by Ixchel G.R., an evolutionary biologist and enthusiastic teacher, we will walk on a mostly flat trail along Redwood Creek, surrounded by---- redwoods! But this time, we will focus on the little plants. We will search the soil and tree barks for hornworts, liverworts and mosses. Ixchel's goal: At the end of the morning you will be able to distinguish these three groups in the field and you will excited about looking at small plants. She will point out different species of liverworts, we will chat about what makes the three groups of bryophytes so different, and we will spend a lot of time looking at the details of the microworld.
We will spend extended periods of time staring at the ground and natural walls.
Length and Difficulty: 4 miles out and back, 200 ft of elevation gain. An easy hike, but there will be a lot of kneeling. 2-3 hours. Or so.
Meet at Canyon Meadow Staging Area Parking Lot in Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. Our leader will be at the end of the parking lot wearing a yellow and blue hat that says “do good”.
