Join us in March for an in-person discussion where we turn to humor in fiction to put things in perspective. This month, we’re offering two book options, both winners of the Thurber Prize for American Humor, one of the highest recognitions for humor writing in the United States.
Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher is a novel told entirely through letters of recommendation written by Jason Fitger, a cranky, overworked English professor at a struggling Midwestern university. With biting wit and academic satire, Schumacher paints a picture of Fitger’s frustrations, personal regrets, and the absurdities of university bureaucracy. The book won the 2015 Thurber Prize for American Humor and has been praised for its sharp and relatable take on academic life. (192 pages)
Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood is a funny memoir about moving back in with her parents, including her father—an eccentric Catholic priest who shreds on the electric guitar. Blending humor with poetic storytelling, Lockwood explores faith, family, and personal identity in a way that is both hilarious and deeply moving. A finalist for the Kirkus Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Priestdaddy was named one of the best books of the year by numerous publications. (354 pages)
For March, you can choose which book to read—or read both! Either way, expect a fun read and some much-needed levity. :)
