What we’re about
We are an all inclusive group of Comunity minded sailors, dedicated to getting more people into sailing as fast as possible! We are entirely free and unfunded so please have an open mind. We believe that free time and the ability to fix stuff resourcefully are the greatest strengths of a sailor.
We offer community building events every month where sailors can help each other learn to sail and fix and maintain boats.
We started this project in New York City more then 3 years ago offering 30 free consecutive 3 day sailing seminars. You can see some of the details on the Free Sailing Seminar meetup www.meetup.com/nycfss and we had an awesome members only club that did really impressive weekly events like circumnavigating Manhattan island and surf sailing on Coney Island and sail camping trips to abandoned islands, Calvert Vaux Park and Sandy Point. And the annual Statue of Liberty race twice. And countless weekend free camping trips to ferry point. We even broke a world record we facilitated our most courageous student to be the first person to sail from West Palm Beach to the little Bahama bank in a 14 foot catamaran without a motor singlehanded without help. We are currently operating a free Sailboat Library in Florida, where we salvage boats or get boats donated and either give them away to our members or lend them out with a deposit. We’re currently planning a trip to Cay Sal Bank and Mexico also. Students and members can captain their own boat or one of ours on this epic trip as we will sail in a flotilla for safety and community building. We will take as many Opti type sailboats with us as we can on our mothership a Gemeni 33 and use them yo teach underprivileged kids how to sail wherever we go. If you have an Opti or know of someone that might have one that you/they could donate to us please let us know! We’re also looking for other shallow draft sailboats or multihulls and big deep draft boats too and a land vehicle. We can give a tax deductible donation receipt in return for the right donations.
