We meet once a month to discuss the social, political, economic and environmental impacts of technology. Our goal is to slow down and question the techno-solutionist narrative* which has permeated all aspects of life. This means examining the unintended harms and potential losses that occur when adopting new technologies, and thinking about alternative approaches that promote a humane and equitable future for all. A selection of short readings (usually three) will be assigned to the group each month to aide and guide discussion. You do not need to be someone working in tech to join the group, you just need to be someone who is living in technologically mediated world. This, by virtue of existing and reading this, means you! *Techno-solutionism = the idea that given the right code, algorithms and robots, technology can solve all of humanities problems. The group is born out of an unforgettable experience at the Porcupine Tree concert earlier this year. That event ignited my love for live music, and I am planning to attend upcoming rock music concerts in Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds etc. The lineup is looking amazing next year with bands like Pendulum, Fall Out Boy, The Maine, Simple Plan etc. This group is an open invitation to anyone who shares a passion for music and interested in exploring the concert scene in 2024. Goal is also to connect people who share a genuine love for attending concerts, fostering a space for camaraderie, shared experiences, and the pure joy of live music. Our objective is to bring together people who are looking to broaden their circle of friends and socialise a bit more. To join, please **make sure your profile photo is a clear, recent, face-only without sunglasses (just like a passport photo)**. This helps our hosts easily identify you at events. As there are multiple people who go by a common first name only, **we need to be able to distinguish you from others**. So, we ask for something that uniquely identifies you such as a surname. For the same reason, the initial won’t be sufficient but a throw in another letter (which doesn’t have to be the second one) or a number and we’d be happy! For example, please don't name yourself "Paul", or "Paul G", but “Paul Grant”, "Paul G24" or "Paul G - York". The cost of 2024’s annual membership is £5, payable to your host at your first event of the year. Hello Everyone, my name is Adam and I've been the organiser of this welcoming and friendly social group since June 2023 with the goal of making it very popular. It is for anyone based in Barnsley and the surrounding areas aged 20 and above that’s interested in making new friends. I used to feel that Barnsley was lacking in a proper regular Meetup group which is why I decided to set up one up to change that. There also isn’t a maximum age limit in this group which you will all be very pleased to know 😊 THE GROUP RULES : There is only a few ground rules that everyone should know about. 1 , Firstly anyone joining the group needs to have a clear face picture of themselves that was taken recently, so no blank profiles or inappropriate images please. 2\. Secondly I politely ask people to update your attendance accordingly within a few hours of each meeting just out of courtesy if you can’t make it for whatever reason\. I always try to be flexible whenever I can \, only if someone has failed to show up without any communication 4 times in a row will I have to consider removing them\. However if in the unlikely event that does happen \, they will have the option to rejoin again after 6 months \( 180 Days \) has passed\. 3\. Please keep communication as mutual and respectful as possible\, try not to private message people you haven’t met before in the WhatsApp group unless you have consent to do so first \. If anyone feels they are being bothered too much by someone they don’t know at all\, let me know and I’ll deal with it promptly\. This group offers a wide variety of activities such as restaurants meals , open air festivals , the cinema 🎦 , ten pin bowling 🎳 , afternoon walks, stand up comedy nights , coach trips and even days out on the train 🚆 to other towns and cities. Usually about 3 or 4 events are held each month including an afternoon coffee ☕️ meeting on the first Sunday of each month and our well attended Pub drinks 🍷 social evening on the last weekend of each month. It’s all about having a good laugh, relaxing and living in the moment and enjoying ourselves . Plus there is no membership fee requirement to join like some groups have. If any particular event doesn’t get much interest or less than 4 people attending , then it will usually have to be either cancelled or rescheduled to a later time. There is also an active WhatsApp group available for regulars who wish to stay connected with each other outside of events , so if anyone feels this group is right for them feel free to send a join request and see what happens, or just message me with any questions you have and I’ll reply to you soon as possible, thanks for reading ! 🙂

This group is open to anyone who wants to widen their circle of friends. We are the Bradford branch of a national organisation, The Oddfellows, which is a not for profit Friendly Society that prides itself in making friends and helping people. In a nutshell we aim to be there for people in the good times and support them in the bad. The events attract a nice mix of male and female and although most of our members are over 50, we are open to all and our aim is to offer everyone a really warm welcome.
