Meet new friends groups near Okemos, MI

Lansing Social Meetup

Lansing, MI

Lansing Social Meetup
This group is for people in the Greater Lansing area to get together and have some fun. We will try out local restaurants, live music, outdoor activities, happy hour, festivals, socializing, and as we grow (and get more organizers) the list will keep growing. This group is for men and women, married or single, and was originally targeted for 30 or 40 something's, but all ages are welcome. There will be some family friendly events, and will be posted when appropriate to bring kids. Most importantly, this group is to make new friends. Please make sure to include a photo of yourself so we know who to look for when you show up. This group may have many singles, but it is not a singles group. Please be respectful and help make everyone feel comfortable. The idea is to meet people in real life. You can send messages to hosts or organizers about events. Direct messaging someone you have never met, or messaging someone about dating before you have met is not allowed. We want everyone to feel comfortable about joining without the pressure of dating. We don't need another dating app. Please show up to an event so you can meet everyone. Please don't pay membership dues if you've never joined. Dues are only to help pay for the site. Meetup charges a fee to have a group. We want you to show up, make new friends, and have some fun. No Show Policy: If you realize you cannot attend an event, please change your RSVP to "Not Going". We don’t need an explanation; we just need to know that we don’t need to save a spot or wait for you. People cancel all the time for work, family, not feeling well, double booked, social anxiety, or you simply just do not feel like it. These are all ok reasons to cancel, just change your RSVP so the event host knows not to look for you. If you are a complete no show, do not send a message to the event host, and we have no idea why you didn’t show up you will get a message from me. If you completely ghosted us, you will be removed from the group. If you have a reason for no-showing, you will get 1 mulligan. I hate to have to kick people out, so please just keep your RSVPs updated.

Labor of Love - a technology 'side project' meetup

East Lansing, MI

Labor of Love - a technology 'side project' meetup

Maybe you have a side project you are working on but need motivation to keep going. Maybe you are planning to write some code on side to learn a new language or technology. Or, maybe you want to learn programming, just coz’ it is fun. We are here for you.

The goal of this meet up is to develop a support group for software enthusiast trying build / learn something cool outside their professional work environment. Even though side projects are supposed to be fun and educational, having some sort of framework to these meetings will be useful. Here is what I propose -

1. Have a GOAL: As technology enthusiasts, we have too many ideas. In my experience most side projects do not amount to anything concrete coz’ we did not have specific goals or accomplishment guide lines. Also, since we are not able devote too much time for these labor of love, it will be productive to know what we want to achieve. We will define concrete goals before we start anything new.

2. Weekly Review: We will have weekly meetings, in a coffee shop, bar, whatever. We will talk about what we have achieved in the past week, how much progress we have made. Most of us are familiar with Stand-up meetings. This is an elaborate version of Stand-ups. We won’t be standing though. I am hoping this will be a no pressure meeting. How much progress we make on our work is completely up to us. Some weeks we might not be able to make any progress at all, and that it is ok. These are side projects after all. Hopefully these meetings will help us stay on track even when progress is slow.

3. Monthly Review: A monthly review (dinner at an awesome local restaurant maybe) just to kind of wrap up a month. The point here is to celebrate small successes, evaluate things, commit to changes if they are not working and move on.

This meetup is an experiment really. I am starting this meetup to give some structure to my curiosity and passion for technology.

It will be nice to find like-minded people, who are willing to have fun, learn and share ideas with peers.

See you soon!
