Upper Valley Humanists Association

The essence of humanism is this: we look to human experience (including the results of scientific inquiry), rather than divine revelation, for guidance on how to live well. So in making our life choices, we rely on scientific facts, and we listen to our own inner voice, to friends, and to wise men and women of all persuasions. For more on humanism, see the page "About Humanism".

We are a group of people who enjoy seeing each other regularly, having a supportive fellowship, and learning together. Those who drop in for one event are always welcome; we hope some will stay and become friends. We have borrowed the motto of the international Sunday Assembly movement:

Live Better, Help Often, Wonder More.

Our meetups fall into three classes. First, we have regular gatherings on the first and third Sunday of each month. These consist of potluck, sometimes a presentation, and discussion. The discussion may get somewhat philosophical at times, but there is always a pragmatic question at the heart of it. Second, we often participate/volunteer, as a group, with other organizations. Third, we like to have fun together, and many of our meetups are just about enjoying a good time with like-minded friends.

In our discussions all points of view are welcome; we require only that every participant be respectful, tolerant, civil and willing to learn.

Upcoming events are described below. If you would like to suggest an event (ideas are always welcome!), please contact any member of the planning group (Sue Buckholz, Jim F, Tracey, Gerald Kozak, Diana Munson, Martha Pullen, Susan Tucker).

Women Outdoors - NH/VT Meetup

Women Outdoors is a national, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a supportive environment where all women can have fun and challenge themselves in a community of women who love the outdoors while respecting the earth. Women Outdoors promotes leadership, friendship, adventure and enjoyment in the great outdoors.

An all-volunteer organization, Women Outdoors has regional chapters in states throughout the US, all of which organize activities for members such as hiking, biking, kayaking and cross-country skiing.

To become a member of this Meetup group, you must use a recognizable facial photo of yourself in your profile that we can use to identify you at our events. A positive attitude goes a long way, too!  :)

You can learn more at www.womenoutdoors.org.

Membership Dues - There are NO membership dues to join this Meetup, though donations of any size are gratefully accepted and will go toward an annual outing and party.  Although it does cost to maintain a Meetup group, the national Women Outdoors organization generously subsidizes our cost and hopes you'll consider joining. There are many benefits to joining Women Outdoors, including being eligible to register for The Gathering: our yearly Memorial Day weekend at a wonderful camp in New Hampshire that features kayaking on a pond, hiking in the White Mountains, bicycling to  nearby towns, skills workshops such as orienteering, a rock climbing wall, and much more. Women Outdoors also offers subsidized or full tuition reimbursement for leadership and outdoor skills training, including first aid and kayak trip leading, for example.

We'll soon have a badge indicating which members of this group are registered members of Women Outdoors.
