This groups is to bring hiking enthusiasts together for glorious days in the beautiful British countryside, usually within easy reach of London. Like a lot of people who live in London, we are bunch of international people and would like to welcome any hiking enthusiast from any national, cultural, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation background to our group. We have plenty of experience in guiding walks in the countryside. In addition to common routes, which are available online, we also design our own routes at times. Everybody is welcome but we have one important criteria to set our group apart from others... and that is **to be able to keep an average (18-20 minutes per mile) to brisk (16-17 minutes per mile) pace\* throughout the walk**. Please see below for guidance on pace. There are groups for fast walkers and groups for slow to average walkers. We are neither. This is a group for average to brisk walking people. In addition to this criteria, we expect the usual civil behavior any social group expects such as being kind, considerate, accountable, ability to take responsibility for yourself. This is mainly a hiking group but we are planning to organise other type of activities at times like cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, camping, cross country skiing. Get ready for new adventures! Free hikes, fitness, and social activities organised by like-minded people. Visit the countryside, beautiful landscapes, and locations in and around the UK (and at times even outside the UK). Enjoy new adventures on your weekdays or weekends being part of a fun group. Also, various other activities would be organised such as running and other outdoor and social activities for fitness and fun. At times local and international travel and trips will be organised and if you decide to join then communicate with the organiser directly for the same. All are welcome to join. Be polite, respectful, and courteous at all times to fellow members and the organiser. Please bear in mind that the participants are responsible for their safety and not the organiser. No service / risk is inferred or accepted. The group is concerned with offering some route guidance and organising events only. Participants take responsibility for their safety and any risk undertaken. The organiser will not be responsible for any accident or injury during an event and/or any costs incurred by participants for transport, insurance, and/or accommodation and in committing/signing up for the hikes/events you agree to undertake sole ownership of all risks concerned. Where? In and around London and within the UK and at times outside the UK. The events won’t get cancelled due to bad weather. However, please bear in mind the risk is yours in attending the events. Please make sure to read the rules when participating in activities. The walk/hike/events are usually led by the organiser. Please do not bring any pets or underage children on a hike without express permission of the event host. Those who turn up to the events without signing up may be removed or banned from the group. The group is led by easygoing and supportive person however, certain discipline needs to be maintained to ensure the activity is given its seriousness. Therefore, please support and cooperate with the organiser. Those who are constantly changing status from Going to Not Going around the last minute or not turning up for the hike will be moved to Not Going or waitlist by the organiser if there is a waiting list and at times may be removed from the group if it is a consistent practice by the individuals concerned. Those who are showing +1 and change to not going just a day before when there is a waiting list may be removed from the group. This is a voluntary not-for-profit group run by volunteers however, a subscription is paid by the organiser in order to maintain the group on this platform. Disrespectful, argumentative, or challenging behaviour towards the organiser may lead to removal from the group or its events. Non-cooperation during the hikes or events will be seen as disrespecting the time and effort of the organiser. Some of the regular attendees may be invited or preferred to some special or weekend away events announced by the organiser which may be for limited numbers only however, these may not always be posted on meetup but on a separate WhatsApp group for regulars. The events are posted mostly in advance so that you can plan your time. Regular attendees may be given preference if there is a waiting list and this is because of certainty of attendance. It is a community focussed activity to fitness and well being. If you have event ideas and suggestions then please feel free to suggest the same to the organiser. The hikes and events are completely free to attend and is organised without any expectation. This is a group for anyone who would love to meet new people, get fitter, enjoy the outdoors and feel more relaxed and happy. Most of our members are over 40, and we all love Nordic Walking. <br>

For those of you who have Nordic Walked before: We have Nordic Walking classes almost every day of the week in South East London. Once a month we have a longer walk, which we call our monthly Explorer. Those Explorer walks can be joined by Nordic Walkers or walkers without poles, so they are an excellent opportunity to meet some of our other members. <br>

Nordic Walking is a fun activity for people of all ages and abilities. It is soft on the joints and knees and helps with back and shoulder pain. You use 90% of your muscles and up to 45% more calories compared to walking without the poles. All in all, a super fun and effective way to get fit, happy, healthy and to meet new friends! <br>

If you haven't tried Nordic Walking before, we offer regular taster sessions in Southeast London. Those sessions are free, and designed to give you the best idea what Nordic Walking is all about and why we all love it so much. <br>

We also regularly offer 4-week Learn to Nordic Walk courses. If the taster session gave you a taste for more, you can sign up for one of those. If you can't find a time or date you are looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch, we might be able to set one up at a time more convenient for you. <br>

Feeling adventurous? We also organise holidays and weekends away, and sometimes we offer kayak coaching or paddleboarding classes. <br>

New comers to meditation especially welcome. Active meditations were designed by Osho with us westerners in mind. It can be challenging with our hectic lifestyles, full of stimulus to just sit down and switch off into silence. How many times have you heard people say' I just can't meditate, my mind is too busy, my body cannot be still etc...' Active meditations were designed by Osho to use the body and breath first, enabling us to 'empty our vessel ' through physical movement breath-work and/or using sound. By doing this we release pent up emotions and tension in the body so that we are more able to reach inner stillness, silence and meditation On the third Saturdays of the month we will have a monthly Osho Dynamic meditation at Lauderdale House which is situated on the entrance to Waterlow Park; an easy walk from Archway tube which is on the Northern line. Meditations are open for everyone to join in!! Regular practice is so healthy and beneficial for mind and body in this day and age. If you cannot afford the suggested fee to join us for a meditation class please ask for an alternative payment plan. Nobody is refused at our meditation classes! Periodically through the months we will also offer classes and workshops to practice other active meditations by Osho. We try to share events with many facets, from facilitating quality connections between people by limiting numbers, to making an extra effort to incorporate as many elements and points of interest as we can. **Why do we limit numbers (even for outdoor events)**? * We genuinely wish to provide a pleasant experience to each individual that attends our events and we believe that smaller groups achieve this in a better way. In our experience, a group between 15-25 (e.g., for walking, hiking) works best. * A smaller group for a 4-hour hike for example, allows participants to have enough time to properly talk to each other (if they wish) – this often results in making even stronger connections for any social get-together after the event. However, our focus remains the main activity, so that it does not become just another mingling event (where the activity becomes the excuse). *Remember, it is easier to move on to the next person on a walk, than sitting face-to-face at a dinner table ;)* * There are often first timers or newcomers that have had to build up the confidence to attend, it can be overwhelming with larger groups for some people - we wish to make it an easier, comfortable and a welcoming experience for them to join us. * We limit numbers, but we also repeat events frequently (walks/hikes in particular), this allows further opportunities to attend the same activity and/or meet different people. * It can often be for safety and consideration to other pedestrians (particularly for walks with narrow paths/busy areas). * Larger groups also tend to be slower, spread out further, take longer for toilet breaks and this can somewhat disrupt the flow of an activity. * Unfortunately, it is a regular occurrence that a significant number that RSVP to an event, do not turn up. Those that regularly do not turn up and do not remove their RSVP (or consistently do it last minute), are often blocking, hindering or discouraging others from attending - If an event is full with a waitlist, we will try and give priority to new or reliable attendees. **We are therefore trying to do our tiny bit, to instil and encourage everyone to be more mindful, considerate, consistent and reliable towards others.** *“Time is always beyond its value. We're a friendly walking group based in Barnet, North London. Our events are generally non-profit making and are run by volunteers. Our membership fees contribute towards the running of the group. **Our walks** * *Unfortunately we no longer allow dogs to join us on our walks.* * We set a limit to numbers on Meetup to avoid having too many on a walk. On most day walks or evening walks, between 10 and 20 people attend, or occasionally up to about 25 on a popular walk. These include those who RSVP through Meetup and some annual members. * Our walks are arranged by a variety of group members, and are at a moderate to brisk pace. If you walk slowly, you will find it difficult to keep up. You may find that the Ramblers’ health walks are more appropriate for you: [https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder](https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder). * All of our walks can (and usually do!) include muddy footpaths, even in the height of summer. You are therefore always advised to wear suitable footwear. * Walks begin at the time stated and do not take into account bus or train arrival times. It is your responsibility to take delays into account when planning your journey and allow enough time to arrive be ready to go. **Our activities - Each year we organise:** * Walking weekends away from London throughout the UK and the occasional trip abroad. * About 20 day walks on Saturdays or Sundays throughout the year and occasional half day walks. These are usually in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire or Essex. * About 20 weekday evening walks, from April until September in the surrounding areas. * Social evenings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Discovery Hall, Netherlands Road, East Barnet, from 8-10pm, featuring guest speakers, barbecues, competitions etc. Pub evenings on the 4th Tuesday. Contact us to find out which pub we will be in this month. Other events organised by members on an ad hoc basis, include cinema, theatre, restaurants etc. Once you are a member, you can participate in as many or as few as you like, it's entirely up to you. **Annual membership** Anyone can join our Meetup group free of charge, then you can attend THREE of our events (day/evening walks or Tuesday evening social meetings) free of charge (apart from any transport costs). Great Outdoors has been one of the best UK based hiking group for over 10 years. If you want to get out shake off the cobwebs and get some miles in exploring some of the UK’s best countryside, national parks and coastal paths, you’re in the right place. In this group we pride ourselves on our friendliness too, we care what your name is and you can expect to  leave having met a group of lovely people and with quite likely some lasting friendships We look after all the logistics on each of our hikes so you can just turn up for a fun day out. The emphasis is on good times and a social group.We are open to anyone regardless of colour, nationality, gender, orientation, and age. Though many of our members are 30- 50 ish, some are younger and some are older. Everyone is welcome here. You can expect people in this group to care what your name is, and we nearly always stop for a drink or a meal at the end of each day, as that's the natural place to mark the end of the hike, and carry on the conversations you were having on route. Please don’t be afraid to come to your first meet up on your own! Most people coming to meet ups do come on there own! That is how we roll, we meet up, and hang out with other friendly human beings and we enjoy life and spend time together, you do not actually have to know each other to do this, but many friendships are born this way.
