London International Hiking and Outdoor Activities Community

London, 17

London International Hiking and Outdoor Activities Community
This groups is to bring hiking enthusiasts together for glorious days in the beautiful British countryside, usually within easy reach of London. Like a lot of people who live in London, we are bunch of international people and would like to welcome any hiking enthusiast from any national, cultural, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation background to our group. We have plenty of experience in guiding walks in the countryside. In addition to common routes, which are available online, we also design our own routes at times. Everybody is welcome but we have one important criteria to set our group apart from others... and that is **to be able to keep an average (18-20 minutes per mile) to brisk (16-17 minutes per mile) pace\* throughout the walk**. Please see below for guidance on pace. There are groups for fast walkers and groups for slow to average walkers. We are neither. This is a group for average to brisk walking people. In addition to this criteria, we expect the usual civil behavior any social group expects such as being kind, considerate, accountable, ability to take responsibility for yourself. This is mainly a hiking group but we are planning to organise other type of activities at times like cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, camping, cross country skiing. Looking forward to meet you at one of our walks... Eser & Maria. \*Pace... strolling >30 minutes per mile, slow 20-30 minutes per mile, average 18-20 minutes per mile, brisk 16-17 miles per hour, fast <=15 minutes per mile. This criteria may vary during long climbs or on uneven, muddy surfaces. [Want to be healthier? Pick up the pace of your walk.](https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/want-to-be-healthier-pick-up-the-pace-of-your-walk/2018/08/16/cc144492-a09f-11e8-8e87-c869fe70a721_story.html)

Fit and Happy Outdoors

London, 17

Fit and Happy Outdoors

This is a group for anyone who would love to meet new people, get fitter, enjoy the outdoors and feel more relaxed and happy. Most of our members are over 40, and we all love Nordic Walking.
For those of you who have Nordic Walked before: We have Nordic Walking classes almost every day of the week in South East London. Once a month we have a longer walk, which we call our monthly Explorer. Those Explorer walks can be joined by Nordic Walkers or walkers without poles, so they are an excellent opportunity to meet some of our other members.
Nordic Walking is a fun activity for people of all ages and abilities. It is soft on the joints and knees and helps with back and shoulder pain. You use 90% of your muscles and up to 45% more calories compared to walking without the poles. All in all, a super fun and effective way to get fit, happy, healthy and to meet new friends!
If you haven't tried Nordic Walking before, we offer regular taster sessions in Southeast London. Those sessions are free, and designed to give you the best idea what Nordic Walking is all about and why we all love it so much.
We also regularly offer 4-week Learn to Nordic Walk courses. If the taster session gave you a taste for more, you can sign up for one of those. If you can't find a time or date you are looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch, we might be able to set one up at a time more convenient for you.
Feeling adventurous? We also organise holidays and weekends away, and sometimes we offer kayak coaching or paddleboarding classes.
Our trips and meetups are all about getting fitter and making you feel good!
Come on, sign up for a free taster, we are sure you will love it!
London Field Arts Activities

London, 17

London Field Arts Activities
Join me in London for an afternoon and evening of field journaling at the Royal Geographical Society, part of their Explore Festival! Field notebooks are a time-honored tradition of explorers and naturalists for hundreds of years. Charles Darwin, Lewis and Clark, Mary Anning, and Beatrix Potter all kept careful notes of their observations and journeys. Keeping a field notebookā€”also known as a nature journalā€”can both deepen our connections to the natural world and help us learn more about it. And you donā€™t have to a trained scientist or artist to keep a journal. This afternoon workshop will start you on the path to developing the skills of a naturalist and a field sketch-artist and a lifelong journey of discovery and exploration. You will learn the tools and processes of keeping a nature journal with instructor Roseann Hanson, a Fellow of the Society and author of Nature Journaling for a Wild Life and Master of Field Arts. The workshop will focus on the importance of field notes, the cognitive value of visual learning, and the social and ecological value of sharing our discoveries. The workshop will include: The nuts and bolts of journal-keeping (paper and ink types, archival systems, how to make entries that you can refer to later, laying out pages, prompts to jump-start observations, and tips on researching science questions sparked by your observations). Easy tips that enable anyone to get started sketching and painting. Roseann will help free you from your inner critic and start sketching and painting. Art in a nature journal is not only lovely to see, but an important component of your skillset because the very act of drawing and painting something from life involves incredibly intense observation. Your brain is wholly occupied by only that thing you are observing and drawingā€”it is a kind of meditation that results in new insights, deeper understanding, and discoveries. A short classroom session and, weather permitting, the rest of the session will be held in Hyde Park (please wear suitable footwear and outdoor clothing.) A copy of the workbook, Nature Journaling for a Wild Life, which includes blank journal pages, special field tools and a basic field sketching set (pen, pencil, eraser, ruler). WHEN: 1 November 2023 2.00pm - 5.00pm WHERE: Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), 1 Kensington Gore, London, SW7 2AR COST: . Ā£48 (includes handbook) After the workshop, join us at the RGS for The Art of Exploration, a panel of environmental scientists, conservationists, explorers, and journalers as they discuss how exploring, studying and drawing what they observe deepens their connections to, and inspires conservation of, the natural world. See details >HERE<.

BACKABUSH OUTDOORS!

London, 17

BACKABUSH OUTDOORS!
**We are BACKABUSH, much copied but still the original and best hiking and outdoor activity Meetup group!!!** **Who are we and how did it all begin?** Backabush is London's longest established hiking and outdoor adventureĀ Meetup group.Ā Our group was originally created back in 2002 (actually before we were on Meetup) by a multinational group of friends who loved hiking and wanted to get more out of our weekends and holidays. We wanted to share our heartfelt passion for the great outdoors andĀ enthusiasm with others. For some years Backabush was an informal, unincorporated association managed by the founders for the benefit of its members. Our group grew rapidly in those early years and in 2008, following legal advice we decided it would be wise and prudent to become a registered company to protect our organisers and our members. Following this review and the formation of the limited company, our members can now pursue their legitimate activities and aims with complete peace of mind. **Why do we do it?** We love the outdoors! The primary motivationĀ is fun (not profit) which means thatĀ our trips offer exceptional value for money. WeĀ continue as a group with the same ethos of organising events and trips for the benefit of our members.Ā This is what we love and we are passionate about what we do. We will always endeavour to be budget conscious and price our activities only to cover necessary expenses. **What do we do?** Over the years we have hiked and explored the National Parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty in Britain and abroad. It may all have started years ago with a few hiking friends gathering for a weekend in a scruffy camping barn somewhere rural and pretty but it has developed a lot from there. Backabush has been hiking and enjoying outdoor adventure for well over a decade now and over this timeĀ we have organised literally hundreds of hiking trips throughout Great Britain. We have enjoyed visits to the Lake District, Snowdonia, Scotland, the Brecon Beacons, the Pembrokeshire Coast, Cornwall, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Cambrian mountains, the Wye Valley, the Forest of Dean,Ā the North York Moors, the New Forest, the South Downs, the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills, the South Downs, the Cotswolds, the Chiltern Hills,Ā the Jurassic Coast, the Gower Peninsula, the Pennines,Ā the Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, the Isle of Arran, Glen Shiel, TorridonĀ etc, etc, etc. National trails and long distance pathsĀ in Britain are another favourite of ours and to date we have completed the full length ofĀ Hadrian's Wall Path, the West Highland Way, the Cumbria Way, the Herriot Way and Wainwright'sĀ Coast to Coast. Although we have yet to complete the full length ofĀ many we have also enjoyed hiking sections of the Cotswold Way, Pennine Way, Offa's Dyke Path, LimestoneĀ Way,Ā Allerdale Ramble, South West Coast Path,Ā Great Glen Way, Monsal Trail, South Downs Way, Ridgeway, Thames Path and many, many others. We were also trailblazers when it came to offering exciting outdoor adventures overseas. Back in 2009 we organised our very first foreign trip when we headed down into Africa to climb Mt Toubkal, the highest summit in Morocco. Next weĀ trekked in Nepal, climbing over a 5000+ metre pass linking the Langtang and Helambu valleys. Since these early treks we went on to organise things like via ferrata holidays in the Italian Dolomites, or hiking trips to the French Alps and Jura mountains. We also love 'hut to hut' trekking and have so far completed every step ofĀ the Tour du Mt Blanc, summited Monte Perdido in the Ordessa National Park and trekked for days in the French Pyrenees to reach the awe inspiring Cirque de Gavarnie. More recently we even organised trips to Slovakia to seek out winter snowshoeing in the High Tatras and gorge scrambling in the Paradise National Park. There are many other adventures we could mention. No other Meetup group offers adventure like this! **How do the logistics work?** We know our members are busy people so we do our best to provide a complete package for you. Backabush will research the locations, the hikes, book the accommodation and make a plan for all the meals. If you do not own a car we will help you to find transport or a lift share. You just need to communicate with the organiser who will help to co-ordinate things with you. With a little co-operation from our members it all works very well and allows usĀ to keep offering newĀ locations and new hikes, year after year. Although we might return to some amazing National Parks quite regularly we always endeavour to find new venues and plan entirelyĀ new hikes. If you check out our past events you will see that we offer unrivalled variety in theĀ locations we visit. **What are the hikes like?** On every Backabush trip we try to provide a choice of hikes each day. Obviously we will choose from the most beautiful and best loved hikes in any given area. These hikes tend to be of various length, duration and difficulty. The idea is that each person can choose the hike that best suits their fitness, experience and interests. It is true that Backabush has a reputation within the Meetup communityĀ for offering longer and more challenging hikes but we always also offer more moderate options for those seeking a more relaxed day outdoors. Generally speaking we wouldĀ say that anyone who can hike for 10 miles in hilly terrain should be fine on our trips. If you have any concerns please don't hesitate to contact us to ask questions. **What about safety?** Safety is always our number one priority. Although we can never make the outdoor environment entirely safe there are many steps that can be taken to minimise risk.Ā Our team of outdoor activity leaders have many, many years of leadership experience and have received extensive outdoor training. Between all of our leadersĀ we have years of military experience,Ā ambulance work or mountain guiding. Our principal leadership team are Mountain Leader trained at Plas-y-Brenin (the National Mountain Sports Centre) in North Wales and Winter Skills trained at Glenmore Lodge in Scotland. We regularly updateĀ our first aid qualificationsĀ and carry the required emergency aid equipment for wilderness situations. Some of us have taught or assisted onĀ micro-navigation training courses and all have excellent route finding skills regardless of visibility or weather. Additional our experience extends to high altitude mountaineering in several continents, be it summiting 6000+ metre peaks in the Andes, conquering the highest mountains in AfricaĀ or completing month long high altitude treks in the Himalayas. We take our 'duty of care' of very seriously and are trained to deal with outdoor emergencies. Sometimes we hire in specific skills as necessary in the form of fully qualified instructors for things like rock climbing, caving, coasteering, kayaking, horse riding, ghyll scrambling or technical mountaineering. For some foreign trips we will either provide logistical support for safe self guided mountainĀ trekking or hire International Mountain Leaders as deemed necessary. **Who joins our trips?** Although most people in the group are in their 20s, 30s and 40s age is not an issue to us - a fun loving and adventurous nature is more important. It is not uncommon to have over a dozen different nationalities represented in a single gathering. Our groups of hikers and outdoor adventurers vary in size but on every trip some people will be regulars and some first timers. Its a great way to make new hiking friends and you need not worry about coming alone as you will always be made to feel welcome. What we all have in common is aĀ love of all kinds of outdoor activity including hiking, trekking, hill walking, mountaineering, scrambling, camping, canoeing, canyoning, kayaking, rock climbing, scuba diving, caving, coasteering, mountain biking and just about anything else that offers some outdoor adventure. We are a very active bunch! We hope YOU will join us sometime soon. **Positive vibes!** **The Backabush Crew & Hiking Team** Contact Geoff & Nathan backabushxplorers@yahoo.com nathancapay@googlemail.com

READ MORE IN DETAILS: Our aim is simple: To get outdoors and **visit new places, enjoy the beautiful scenery with people** who want to have fun and meet new friends. We have a simple philosophy; provide fun and sociable events that incorporate the best an area has to offer with experienced hike leaders. **All the photos shown were taken at events by group members**...thank you to our talented group photographers Alex D., David D., Spencer, Mike and many others. In **2024 we are proud to say that we ran events in over 35 different location**s covering the breadth of the UK from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands and from Pembrokeshire to Norfolk. In addition to this, we have hosted trips in over **20 different European locations** and we are **constantly striving to offer new and interesting trips**. We are confident in 2024 there will be even more events and places that we will be visiting. The **AAA crew is made up** of a lot of **outdoor enthusiasts** with decades of experience, a number of our principal hike leaders originate from the **British Army** **and all have extensive navigation, mountain and first aid experience.** So you'll be in steady hands! Your taste buds will also be very well catered for by our team of chefs, cooks and kitchen helpers. AAA's mix of great food, capable hike leaders, interesting destinations and inclusive social aspects has been very popular with our members, so popular that we are proud to recognise that other larger groups have now been replicating both our events and format and menus. We are indeed flattered by any imitation as the more groups offering trips is good for everyone and we hope one day to be in a position to flatter their achievements. We will continue to **strive to provide popular destinations at affordable prices** with a **strong emphasis on providing good hikes, quality food and enjoyable and inclusive socialising**. You can also be assured that the events and activities we list are activities we have hosted and not just a marketing ploy, as adopted by one of the largest UK outdoor groups. Our most popular events are weekend hiking trips to locations around the UK. **What makes our events?** Without a doubt, the answer to this question is our members. We are proud of the fact that we regularly have over 50% of our weekend and overseas trips made up of loyal members who have attended other trips. This is not to say that the group is cliquey in any way. As hosts, we have belonged to groups where cliques exist and we work hard with our members to ensure that this doesn't happen. AAA has some basic principles for ensuring successful events. They are quite simple: 1. **Great Hiking Destinations**. If we are not interested in the destination, then we don't host a trip there. We also don't resist the same destination multiple times in the year just to host more trips than other groups. 2. **Quality accommodation is** suitable for the event. 3. Only using **Experienced Hike Leaders and or qualified instructors** for other activities 4. **Comprehensive Destination Research** which we always pre-visit before proposing an event. **All our European trips have been investigated first, hiking routes checked, hotels and restaurants approved by the organisers. This is what makes us different from others bring us the 5 \* reviews!** 5. **Control of the finances**, we don't use third-party operators on the ground to book transport and accommodation. We control the money, this reduces any risk of ground operators going into liquidation without the Meetup Group having any recourse. 6. **Control of the logistics.** If we don't have control of the finances we can't control the logistics. If we have control of the logistics it enables us to adjust the programme if needed. **Who attends our events?** The **majority of our active members range in age between the mid-20s to late 50s**, but age is no barrier so long as you are at least young at heart. Members generally live or work in the greater London area, but we have an **ever-increasing number of members who live all over the UK and join us in the destination**. After all, you donā€™t need to live in London to visit the Lake District! A large proportion of our members are international, providing an interesting and diverse mix of experiences and cultures. We also have a significant proportion of single members at our events, although you certainly donā€™t need to be single to attend. We have many couples attending our events and some of them have met on our trips. **If you are nervous about committing to a weekend trip, don't be, almost everyone has turned up at an event before without knowing anyone. We all know what it's like.** If you are still concerned try one of our evening or day events, they act as a taster and you are sure to meet like-minded people. We also work hard to ensure that the trips are inclusive for everyone. We usually provide a minimum of two hike leaders on weekends and overseas hikes to ensure we can offer a mix of hikes to meet the group's needs. We rarely have hikes that exceed 28 people (day hikes only with 1 guide) and usually, the hikes are pitched to a group of no more than 10- 16 people of similar fitness and ability on a weekend away. **What do we do?** **We organise the logistics for our hiking trips so that you donā€™t have to**. We find the locations, book the venues and organise all catering for weekends. **We even help coordinate transport and lift shares. If you don't have transport contact the organiser who will help put you in contact with someone who's driving.** **Our aim is to explore and hike in picturesque and beautiful rural locations throughout the British Isles and beyond**. We regularly visit all of the UKā€™s National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whilst we often repeat visits to the many great National Parks we do vary the locations we stay at as best as we can. W**e certainly don't repeat the same venues and walks over and over again just because we have a hike or hostel that works and is easy to repeat.** One look at our past events will show you the variety of places visited. **EVENING SOCIALS** We arrange a host of evening events that usually provide an element of the activity. **We believe it's better to get people together and involved in an activity they can participate in rather than just organising a Meetup in a pub.** However, we normally conclude our events with a social drink or two in a pub. Evening events have included: [(examples of our events can be viewed in our past events section)](http://www.meetup.com/AAA-London-Group/#past) **Treasure & Scavenger Hunts around London**, Go-Karting, Paintball, **Kayaking along the Thames**, Yoga, Shopping Discount evenings, Pub Quizzes, **Charitable Volunteering Events**, Games nights, **Orienteering** and Photography exhibitions. **DAY HIKES AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES** We organise day walks and activities throughout the year. These usually depart from a central London station and the hikes normally start at locations 60-90 minutes outside of London in areas of scenic beauty. If you live close to the start of the hike let us know and join us there. **We look to organise everything, so all you need to do is turn up and we will have your tickets and everything ready.** Our hikes are led by very capable navigators with years of map reading experience. In fact, one of our hike leaders spent most of his military life navigating at night, so he's relieved to be allowed out navigating during the daylight hour! We also organise other events such as; **Kayaking on the Cuckmere and into the sea**, Go Ape, Go-karting, canoeing the River Wye, **caving**, climbing & abseiling, **zip wires**, London's Lord Mayor's Show, **navigation training** and even photography sessions. **HIKING AND ACTIVITY WEEKENDS** Typically we organise two or more weekends per month in all parts of the UK. Trips usually involve a visit to the National Park or an Area of Natural Beauty throughout the UK. Sometimes we organise optional activities that can range from Yoga to cycling. Since 2013 we have included even more climbing & Abseiling, Caving, Canoeing, Scrambling, Kayaking, Surfing and Wine Tasting. But nothing is off-limits so if you have an idea let us know. Normally we hire for the **exclusive use of a Youth Hostel or similar accommodation,** sometimes it can be a hotel or lodge. **AAA almost always hosts breakfast and evening meals** as we are very particular about maintaining a reputation for providing quality food on our weekends. We will be there to greet you on arrival and allocate rooms etc. There is **always a warm supper on a Friday night followed by homemade cake**. The weekends then take on a well-rehearsed routine that ensures we can maximize the time for hiking. We try where possible not to repeat weekends and if we do we do so in different seasons. However, some locations like Snowdon and the Brecon Beacons are always very popular and worth repeating. But unlike some groups, you won't find us visiting the same location twice or more in the same month. As organisers, we have a passion for the outdoors. **OVERSEAS TRIPS** We enjoy experiencing new places and we are sure you do, too. So we are always looking to host hiking-orientated trips in new overseas locations. We typically organise the accommodation, catering etc as well as plan with detail the hikes in the local areas. Often we will pick you up from the local airport or provide you with details to organise your own transfers to the accommodation. We will even recommend flights and help you coordinate your travel arrangements with others in the group. When we are in the location we help to facilitate additional activities from mountain biking, paragliding, white water rafting to wine tasting or local sightseeing trips. **Who are we?** Our core team have a wealth of experience in a wide variety of key areas. We have years of hiking and outdoor experience. O**ur principal events hosts and hike leaders have over three decades of military experience, two from elite units** (certainly not in the catering corp.) as well as a **15-year career in the event management industry** producing events from small high-end events to logistics for 15,000-person events. **One of our event hosts has even won awards in the event industry**. Not content with our existing experience we also undertake additional training to keep our key skills tip-top. Click here to [Meet the team](http://www.meetup.com/AAA-London-Group/pages/AAA_London_Group_crew/) **Why do we do it?** **Quite simply we love the outdoors and making the most of this beautiful country we live in and what better way to do it than by meeting new friends?** **We aim to build a great community of hikers with whom we can share our enjoyment of the outdoors and adventurous activities. As they say, size isn't important!** We are never happier than when we see the same members repeatedly attend our events, many have been joining us for years and we continue to enjoy their company. Many of our members have made new lifelong friends after trips, some have developed into loving relationships and we know of at least three couples that have met and got married after meeting at our events. **How do we do it?** We create appealing trips that are affordable to all. They are affordable because we generally use Youth Hostels in the UK for up to 3-night trips, lodgers in Scotland for longer events and cater for ourselves and everyone helps and contributes towards the weekend. [https://vimeo.com/130983236](https://vimeo.com/130983236) **The food you enjoy has been said by many to be the best they have experienced at any Meetup event.** We strive to ensure we provide a **cooked breakfast**, not just a cold continental buffet, after all, if you are setting off on a day's hike you want a hearty meal. We set everything up in the morning for you to make your own **sandwiches with fillings of your own choice**. AAA dinner is always very popular with wholesome ingredients including a variety of salads, vegetarian dishes as well a typical main selection followed by a homemade dessert. After supper, we all get to relax and socialise, sometimes with some games, whichever is most fitting. Whilst we all enjoy a pub visit, **we include the dinner within the cost**, so it's not an extra cost or a car journey (with no alcohol!). **[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/AAA-London-Group/pages/20448201/AAA_Frequently_Asked_Questions/)** Many people ask us questions about our trips, we hope that we cover most of the usual questions in the event description. We also have some answers to the popular question in our [FAQ section](https://www.meetup.com/AAA-London-Group/pages/20448201/AAA_Frequently_Asked_Questions/) **Safety** Our main hike leaders have **undertaken the six-day Mountain Leader course (accredited by the MLT)** as well as having **undertaken the two and three-day Wilderness & Outdoor Activity First Aid course**. One of our hike leaders even undertook a 6-month military-medical course culminating with practical training in an A&E Hospital and 2 weeks with paramedics. Both of **our principal hike leaders have over 20 years of military experience,** not just as conscripts. Much of their experience was focused on fieldcraft, navigation and first aid, making them ideal hike leaders. All of our events are run by very experienced hikers, most of our hike leaders have a minimum of Mountain Leader training and an Outdoor Activity First Aid qualification or similar experience/qualifications. It would, however, be unfair to say that this makes the outdoors safe, there are always risks present, but with our experience, training and meticulous planning, we aim to minimise the risk. Generally, our hikes tend to be limited to 20 people when in the hills and 24-28 in the lowlands as our training indicates that this is a safe number, it's also important for everyone's enjoyment that the hike is not hindered by big numbers, or a very slow pace as you constantly find yourself waiting and it prevents people getting left behind, as we hear so often occurs in other groups with 40-50 people on a day hike. **What type of activities do we do?** Over the past years, we have offered a wide range of events. These have included; **Hiking & walking** (of course), kayaking along the Thames, **camping & canoeing**, yoga breaks, fitness weekends, potholing, **historic sightseeing, overseas trips**, indoor and outdoor rock climbing, cycling, trekking, backpacking, **adventure weekends**, coast walking, long distant walking, caving, countryside conservation, **charity volunteering**, sea kayaking, **treasure hunts**, paintball, the Y**orkshire 3 peaks challenge,** abseiling, recreation weekends, **gorge walking & canyoning**, rafting, navigation courses, culture trips, community trips, tennis, orienteering, coasteering, go-karting, horse riding and **paragliding**ā€¦ *Unlike some larger groups who claim to have offered these activities, because it's good for their marketing and Meetup listing, we have offered all these events. Please, check out our past events.* There are many other activities we would like to give a try in the future such as sailing, scuba diving, static line parachuting, skydiving, exercise boot camps, target shooting, clay pigeon shooting etcā€¦ **Where do we visit?** Our usual destinations include the National Parks of the United Kingdom such as: Brecon Beacons, Norfolk Broads, Cairngorms, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Lake District, Loch Lomond, New Forest, Northumberland, North York Moors, Dark Peaks, Peak District, Pembrokeshire Coast, Snowdonia, South Downs and the Yorkshire Dales. We have also organised events with visits to the following areas of natural beauty that have included: Arnside and Silverdale, Chichester Harbour, Chilterns, Cornwall, Cotswolds, Cranborne Chase & West Wiltshire Downs, Dedham Vale, Dorset, East Devon, Isle of Wight, Kent Downs, Lincolnshire Wolds Malvern Hills, Mendip Hills, Nidderdale, Norfolk Broads & Coast, North Devon, North Pennines, Northumberland Coast, North Wessex Downs, Quantock Hills, Shropshire Hills, Solway Coast, South Devon, Suffolk Coast & Heaths, Surrey Hills, Tamar Valley and the beautiful Wye Valley. Many of our hikes have included some of the popular long-distance routes, these have included: Cotswold Way National Trail, Cumbria Coastal Way, Highland Way, East Riding Heritage Way, Grand Union Canal Walk, Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail, Herriot Way, Hertfordshire Way, Mendip Ring, North Downs Way National Trail, North-West Coastal Trail, Offa's Dyke Path National Trail, Peak District High-Level Route, Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail, Pennine Way National Trail, Snowdonia Round, Solent Way, South Downs Way National Trail, South West Coast Path National Trail, Southern Upland Way, Thames Path National Trail, Wainwrights Way, Wales Coast Path, Wessex Ridgeway Trail, West Highland Way, Westmorland Way, White Peak Way, Wilts and Berks Canal Towpath, Winchcombe Way and Wye Valley Walk. We have also organised overseas trips to destinations such as: The Pyrenees, Costa Brava in Spain, the Dolomites, Austria, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Slovenia (we are specialised in this destination, having created 4 trips), different parts of Croatia, Poland, Madeira, Scotland, France: Corsica, Swiss & French Alps and Russia & Ukraine. We have plans for trips to Ireland, Norway, Kilimanjaro, AndalucĆa and as the group flourishes we will offer many more, too! *The destinations and activities listed are examples of events AAA have organised. They are not places and events added here to improve our Meetup search ratings and mislead members. We accept that imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but we don't feel flattered when it misleads others. One of the other larger groups has almost identical text as ours in places, the most notable error on their part is the inclusion of the West Highland Way, Highland Way and Winchcombe Way which are in countries and locations their group has not visited. We are not even going to comment on the activities listed we will leave you to make up your own minds. Come on guys, you know who you are, let's all be honest about what we do and where we go.*

We are the only family outdoors meetup group in UK.
We are passionate about getting all kids and their parents outside. The secret mantra behind our existence is : Children need Children. By hosting organised outdoor activities and days out, families can come together, make friends, have more fun and less stress, and also avail of discounts and benefits that are available for groups.
We are essentially a platform for parents and outdoors professionals, where they can propose ideas, create meetups and participate in outdoor activities.

What do we do

To achieve our mission to get kids and their parents outdoors more, we :

- Organise fun outdoor family days out over the weekends and school holidays, with focus on spending as much time as possible outdoors. They are planned with great consideration to ensure most of the logistics is taken care of in advance for busy parents, so you just turn up and have an adventure with your children.

- Encourage and support other parents around the UK to host similar meetups in their area - Provide a forum for parents to discuss and get ideas, tips, reviews about outdoor places to explore not just in UK, but also away on their holidays

- Provide a platform for outdoor professionals around the UK to host family-friendly outdoor workshops/events, so that parents can go to one place to find opportunities to take their kids outdoors
Who we are
We are a a group of families who like to spend more time outdoors and have fun whilst at it.
We were walking, hiking and spending time outdoors as part of various hiking groups. We were acutely aware of how being outdoors makes one feel calmer, at peace and also bestows a sense of achievement. As a parent, when you experience something so enriching, you want to pass it on to your children too.

The crispness of the air, the clarity of the water, the vastness of the space, the sheer beauty of the landscape - we wanted these to be part of our children's childhood. We knew with personal experience that being with nature will aid them to find a joy within - a precious life skill that will help make their lives happier in the long run.

More we digged into it, we found years of research worldwide, resonating with our own experience - Experts and scholars proving that not only being outdoors benefits young kids in many different ways, but also the current lack of time outdoors is said to be a cause of a number of growing concerns in young children - stress, anxiety, lack of focus, obesity, low cardio-respiratory fitness, vitamin D deficiency and even ADHD.

We are a non-profit initiative and 100% of the payments go towards the expenses of organising meetups, such as : Tickets, entrance fees, guide fees, meetup fees and so on. We strive to keep our costs to minimal to that we make our meetups more affordable.

Why are families not able to spend enough time outdoors?
If we look back at our childhood, I am sure most of us will have memories of outdoors. Unfortunately, this is one thing that our generation has benefitted from, that we are not able to pass on to the next generation.

As per research commissioned by Planet Ark, in 2011, in Australia, 73% respondents reported playing outdoors more often than indoors when they were young as compared to only 13% of their children. 64% reported climbing trees when they were children as compared to less than 20% of their children.

There were several such studies conducted worldwide, telling a very similar story.

As per National trust study in 2013,called Natural Childhood, less than one in 10 children regularly played in wild spaces, it said, compared to half of children a generation ago

In 2016, as per the research conducted by National trust found that children were playing outside for just over four hours a week, compared to 8.2 hours a week when the adults questioned were children.

So nothing much has changed in last 5-6 years, other than increase in the screen time in children, which has further declined the time spent outdoors. Three-quarters of UK children now spend less time outside than prison inmates!

National trust research also revealed that nine out of 10 parents would prefer their children to spend their childhood outdoors, developing a connection with nature! So while so many of us would want to take our kids outdoors, why are we not doing it?

Here are some of the reasons, we have collated :

ā€¢ Living in and around cities like London, means, getting to the countryside is less accessible

ā€¢ With all the extra-curricular activities and clubs for kids on the weekends mean even less time for families to spend together

ā€¢ It becomes even more difficult for both the parents to find time together. And for a single parent, the idea of taking the child out walking for hours may seem overwhelming.

ā€¢ Families with younger children find it stressful to go out walking, worrying when the little one will give up and rest of the day might turn out to be exhausting

ā€¢ Going on your own with the little one in woodlands and open spaces in new locations, away from civilization may sound daunting and even unsafe.

ā€¢ The famous british weather is not exactly encouraging either! Parents worry about getting their children ill.

Why go with take kids outdoors

Take kids outdoors is your answer to most of these challenges, making it very easy to take your kids outdoors.

ā€¢ We know the best bits of natural Britain that are still easy to get to from London, and that are fun for both children and adults.

ā€¢ We do the organizing, take care of most of the logistics, so that you and your kids can just turn up

ā€¢ We strive to include some time on our days out of unstructured play, where children can just roam, run, explore and play freely

ā€¢ Having fun is important. And we have found that engaging with nature in its elements is almost always fun, with some age appropriate activities kids to do. Each of our meetup includes a mission. Every child completing the mission, earns a badge. When a child wins five badges, they get a prize.

ā€¢ Children need children. With other children of similar age group, seemingly boring days out become the most memorable and fun. On our meetups, we have seen that the children just keep on going, when they have other children and no boundaries of time and space....sometimes its the adults who struggle to keep up!

ā€¢ Children make new friends and adults do too. Meeting other parents of the kids of similar age group means grownups are share the pain and feel connected.

ā€¢ Parents can relax and enjoy as well, as children are able to enjoy with other children without needing a parent constantly engaged. Single parent families, single child families, families with children with large age gap, particularly find the Take kids outdoors meetups as an opportunity to breathe easy.

ā€¢ Our events give an opportunity to parents to introduce outdoors in their lives as well. Our members often talk about how the meetup re-energises them and makes them feel calm and peaceful for many weeks afterwards

ā€¢ We take safety seriously. All our meetups have a qualified first-aider on. Sadly, the outdoors always presents risks but through our experience, training and careful planning, we do our best to minimise those. Refer to our Safeguarding policy and safeguarding guide for group members to know more.

ā€¢ We are able to negotiate special benefits such as guided talks or private tours with our partners, which will be difficult get in the same price, if you were to go on your own.

ā€¢ We strive to keep our costs down and make the meetups affordable for everyone. Our meetups are probably the most cost effective across all outdoor oriented meetups in the area, even in comparison to the adult meetups

ā€¢ On our journey, we have built partnerships with so many inspirational people and organisations, with vast knowledge of the local area, love for British countryside and passion for outdoors. We use these partnerships to create creative itineraries that make our days out even more irresistible.

Why it is so great to take your kid outdoors

The American writer Richard Louv, author of the bestseller Last Child in the Woods, has defined the phenomenon as "nature deficit disorder". Something "very profound" has happened to children's relationship with nature over the last couple of decades, he says, for a number of reasons.

A growing body of evidence is starting to show that it's not so much what children know about nature that's important, as what happens to them when they are in nature. Respectable scientists ā€“ doctors, mental health experts, educationalists, sociologists ā€“ are beginning to suggest that when kids stop going out into the natural world to play, it can affect not just their development as individuals, but society as a whole

Children who spend more time outdoors

Have more fun

ā€¢ Going on an adventure with mum and dad and finding the wonder in the little things along the way is a wonderful way to create lasting memories.

Are Physically fitter

ā€¢ Walking and playing outside helps to build strong bones and good fitness levels. The varied terrain helps to develop motor skills such as agility, balance and coordination.

ā€¢ Being in the sunshine, even in winter, means children naturally absorb vital vitamin D, which helps build strong bones, improves immunity and is proven to help improve moods and create a positive mental attitude.

Are mentally stronger and happier

ā€¢ Being in nature help decrease childrenā€™s stress levels by offering them an escape from life's daily routine. Their mind remembers how to manage stress better even when they grow up.

ā€¢ Attention Restoration Theory poses that urban environments require ā€œdirected attentionā€, which forces us to ignore distractions and exhausts our brain. In natural environments, we practice an easy type of attention known as ā€œsoft fascinationā€ that is relaxing.

ā€¢ Playing outdoors helps kids feel happier and calmer and encourages children to get rid of built up energy, particularly if they tend to be fidgety when sitting for long periods of time.

ā€¢ Even five minutes' "green exercise" can produce rapid improvements in mental wellbeing and self-esteem, with the greatest benefits experienced by the young, according to a study at the University of Essex(2010)

Are more confident

ā€¢ Children gain experience in dealing with new situations, and those situations turn out to be fun! This helps them develop the confidence to approach other new situations in life and will help them feel confident in their own ability to handle the unknown.

ā€¢ Outdoor activities can help children to learn to push their boundaries and become good at risk assessment. It also teaches them to explore new games and become confident in learning to try new things without being guided by adults.

Academically better performanant

ā€¢The combination of release of built up energy and inner calmness, by being outdoors, has proved to improve focus. Children with ADHD concentrate better after a walk in the park.

ā€¢ Playing outside encourages children to think of learning as an ongoing fun process instead of just something done in the classroom. Being out in nature fosters a sense of curiousness, as well as improving attention spans.

ā€¢ Free and unstructured play outdoors boosts problem-solving skills and self-discipline

ā€¢ Nature activates all the sensesā€”you can see, hear, smell, and touch (and dare we say taste) outdoor environments.

ā€¢ Playing outdoors encourages childrenā€™s creativity. They can think more freely, invent their own games, and approach the world in inventive ways.

"For some people, a stick is just a stick. But for a stick found in the wild by a child, the possibilities are endless. It can be a pen, a sword, a witchā€™s broom, a dragonā€™s bone ... Anything"

-- Musician and Game Of Thrones star, Raleigh Ritchie

Better at social skills, more positive and self-aware

ā€¢ As outdoor spaces are usually less crowded than indoors, it is less intimidating and helps children to naturally come out of their shells and be more social. This means that children will be more willing to join in games and activities, and they will also be more likely to talk to different children and make new friends.

ā€¢ Children who play outside engage in more imaginative games, which naturally leads them to communicate with each other more. This helps children learn how to work in groups, including learning how to share, how to negotiate and how to resolve conflicts. It is known to boost co-operation, flexibility and self-awareness.

In love with nature and agents for preserving it for future generations

ā€¢ Children who spend time outdoors, learn to appreciate the importance of it. They build a genuine connection and affinity with nature and therefore more likely to protect the environment when the grow up.

If you are interested in finding out more, here are several resources including videos, articles, blogs and research from around the world, where more and more people and organisations are screaming loudly about taking our kids outdoors.
