London International Hiking and Outdoor Activities Community
This groups is to bring hiking enthusiasts together for glorious days in the beautiful British countryside, usually within easy reach of London. Like a lot of people who live in London, we are bunch of international people and would like to welcome any hiking enthusiast from any national, cultural, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation background to our group. We have plenty of experience in guiding walks in the countryside. In addition to common routes, which are available online, we also design our own routes at times. Everybody is welcome but we have one important criteria to set our group apart from others... and that is **to be able to keep an average (18-20 minutes per mile) to brisk (16-17 minutes per mile) pace\* throughout the walk**. Please see below for guidance on pace. There are groups for fast walkers and groups for slow to average walkers. We are neither. This is a group for average to brisk walking people. In addition to this criteria, we expect the usual civil behavior any social group expects such as being kind, considerate, accountable, ability to take responsibility for yourself. This is mainly a hiking group but we are planning to organise other type of activities at times like cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, camping, cross country skiing. Looking forward to meet you at one of our walks... Eser & Maria. \*Pace... strolling >30 minutes per mile, slow 20-30 minutes per mile, average 18-20 minutes per mile, brisk 16-17 miles per hour, fast <=15 minutes per mile. This criteria may vary during long climbs or on uneven, muddy surfaces. [Want to be healthier? North London Outdoor Group

Barnet, F8

North London Outdoor Group
We're a friendly walking group based in Barnet, North London. Our events are generally non-profit making and are run by volunteers. Our membership fees contribute towards the running of the group. **Our walks** * *Unfortunately we no longer allow dogs to join us on our walks.* * We set a limit to numbers on Meetup to avoid having too many on a walk. On most day walks or evening walks, between 10 and 20 people attend, or occasionally up to about 25 on a popular walk. These include those who RSVP through Meetup and some annual members. * Our walks are arranged by a variety of group members, and are at a moderate to brisk pace. If you walk slowly, you will find it difficult to keep up. You may find that the Ramblers’ health walks are more appropriate for you: [https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder](https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder). * All of our walks can (and usually do!) include muddy footpaths, even in the height of summer. You are therefore always advised to wear suitable footwear. * Walks begin at the time stated and do not take into account bus or train arrival times. We do not check for, or respond to, requests for the start of any walk to be delayed. It is your responsibility to take delays into account when planning your journey and allow enough time to arrive be ready to go. **Our activities - Each year we organise:** * Walking weekends away from London throughout the UK and the occasional trip abroad. * About 20 day walks on Saturdays or Sundays throughout the year and occasional half day walks. These are usually in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire or Essex. * About 20 weekday evening walks, from April until September in the surrounding areas. * Social evenings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Discovery Hall, Netherlands Road, East Barnet, from 8-10pm, featuring guest speakers, barbecues, competitions etc. Pub evenings on the 4th Tuesday. Contact us to find out which pub we will be in this month. Other events organised by members on an ad hoc basis, include cinema, theatre, restaurants etc. Once you are a member, you can participate in as many or as few as you like, it's entirely up to you. **Annual membership** Anyone can join our Meetup group free of charge, then you can attend THREE of our events (day/evening walks or Tuesday evening social meetings) free of charge (apart from any transport costs). If you book on a walk, and are unable to join us, please cancel your RSVP. This allows someone on the waitlist to join. If you do not cancel, the event may be counted as one of your three events. After your 3 free events, we request that you apply for annual membership if you wish to take part in further walks or other Group activities. Please see our website for membership details. **Further information** Please visit our website at **[www.northlondonoutdoorgroup.org](http://www.northlondonoutdoorgroup.org/)**. There you can find: • Our programme of activities including day walks, weekends away and Tuesday socials • Information about our group • A membership application form (in About Us > [Membership Details](http://www.barnetyha.org/about-us/membership-details/))

Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Activity & Social Group - HBASG

Hitchin, F8

Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Activity & Social Group - HBASG
**May I wish you all a most warm welcome to - Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Activity and Social Group (HBASG).** HBASG's Main aim is for all its highly valued members to have an absolutely fabulous time. Meet people in the Hertfordshire + Beds areas and make new friends and as valued individuals, live life with even more fun 😀. Events HBASG now run include Fine Dining, Music, Cinema, Bowling and “Specialist events” such as Picnics, Short Walks, BBQ’s, Flying/Gliding, Ballooning, Gardens, Comedy & Hosted holiday events + We have in fact now run for many years a most "Fabulously Inclusive “ HBASG community for the benefit of ALL of the Hertfordshire & Beds Area :) \*\* To cover the ever increasing running costs incurred from the Meetup Franchise (meetup.com) **HBASG** now charges from June 2021 + a small **BI-ANNUAL FEE of £6 (** but with **NO LIMIT’s** to the events you can attend. :) All this for the cost of one drink...What Great Value :) \*\* Please feel free “literally” to have a browse around at our fun filled events calendar via your PC or mobile phone and perhaps even download the www.meetup.com APP ! This group is run by Hugh as the Group Owner & Main Organiser. However HBASG is also a team effort with some great Event Hosts, and many others who kindly put forward their own kind ideas, and/or help host specific events and also aid Hugh with some Planning and Group Event(s) and administration(s). Although …. more help is always kindly needed/appreciated.     We wish /need ALL OUR MEMBERS to be active/interactive. However we fully appreciate that some newcomers may have some reticence at attending their first event(s). Please don't be shy :) ..We are indeed a fab and introductionally friendly group ! If you feel a little stressed and a little less than intrepid…..Please feel free to private message any of our event host(s) (and/or me ….Hugh) and kindly request we arrange a meeting point either close(r) to or within any HBASG venue(s) actual locale. Our band of happy Event Hosts will always be pleased to help meet and greet you, but can only do so if you are able/willing to turn up in timely fashion at the events planned venue(s) and posted start time(s). If, for any reason you have to alter your attendance plans…..Can you as a courtesy, kindly ensure you inform the event host(s) of any such changes by posting a kind comment on the event board. \*\* If it's on the same day as the event, or the event has already begun, please kindly message the host directly (by text if they have given out their phone number), as they may not be able to see the event comments due to lack of internet at the venue. HBASG Hosts /Organisers usually permit people to bring guests to almost all events, however some are limited to …”Members only”. Kindly note that :- Events are for adults over 18 only unless the event states 'Children Welcome Event '. Guests should be over 18 as well. Please confirm with the event host(s) if you are in any way unsure of the age limitations per event. And now for the “Fiscal Admin etc “  1. The bi-annual fee for HBASG is only £6 which I think you will perhaps agree is.... A GREAT DEAL :)  2. However once you have attended a few events you may wish to donate £1 to £3 perhaps per event towards the events running costs For those who are not yet aware, Meetup Ltd (based HQ in the USA) charge every Meetup Group Owner/Organiser a fee of over $150 every 6 months to run their group on Meetup [https://www.meetup.com/pricing/](https://www.meetup.com/pricing/). To recover these meetup costs, HBASG usually organise a few very specialist fun events during the year and then charge a few pounds extra per person. This coming year (2024+) we will also be requesting occasional additional event funding’s via voluntary contributions – Say an amount we suggest of say …anything from £1 up to say £10. (Example Hugh actually also run “Green Minded Singles and,,,,generously provides(d) £40+ to the BHS Group, but also pays its own full fees of over $150 + per 6 months …Running for the benefit of members areas - HBASG !) Kindly note that If enough “voluntary funds” are received that go over the HBASG Meetup running cost fees. Any additional funds received will be put aside for the next subscription running cost period J and /or be utilised for running of other fun events such as our fabulous picnics and providing non-alcoholic drinks etc at Gliding/Flying /Picnic/Party EventsLlarger HBASG participation events. Meantime….We thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to seeing you soon at future HBASG Events ! Often Asked Questions :- Q1) When you expectantly have 1000+ members. What happens if everyone contributes, what will you do with any received profit(s)? A1) There are currently less than 950 currently actually "active" members. If contributions go over $240 then we will utilise funds received for next years membership fee’s and/or conduct event discounting if a charge is deemed necessary to cover such future event cost(s). Q2) Why have you asked for Voluntary contributions and membership fee(s) ? A2) HBASG is run by Hugh. Hugh firmly believes like some others that, charging large group membership fee(s) can make Meetup Groups far too business orientated. This was not what was originally intended by the originators of “Meetup.com” i.e To create Fun Membership Groups …..For people to mutually enjoy events with ! Note :- Meetup USA Ltd began with “good intentions” after the US 9/11 attacks to bring “Impacted families/friends “ together in mutual support …….after such a terrible day ! However Meetup is now a major US company making Million dollar profits via charging us the Meetup group owners/organisers $260 + a year. Clearly we are giving “absolutely free” to HBASG members our own considerable amount of valuable time and efforts. We would therefore appreciate being able to recoup at least some of the subscription fees we are bi-annually charged by Meetup.com for the benefit of all group members. Q4) How do I make any donations to HBASG ? A4) either by contacting Hugh Direct (or any event host/organiser) to provide a voluntary payment. Please contact Hugh direct - If you need his HBASG - BACS account details or for any other reasons, questions or concerns you may have.

St Albans Silent Book Club irl

St Albans, F8

St Albans Silent Book Club irl
Here's a now-not-so-novel (!) idea: Inspired by the Silent Book Club phenomenon (https://silentbook.club), bring along your current read of choice, any genre and any format (whether physical books, e-books, or audiobooks). There is NO assigned reading and absolutely NO deadlines to finish a book! We meet up in an easily accessible space in St Albans town centre, such as the local Waterstones, or Courtroom cafe or St Albans public library, and maybe even outdoors occasionally, weather permitting (probably three times a year). Depending on our location, we can order food or drinks and discuss our planned reads for a few minutes. Then, at a set time, it's time to immerse ourselves in 1+ hour of quiet, uninterrupted reading. At the end we can decide to share what we've been reading (or not) - and then we can choose to stay back at the end of our meetup (or not)! The simple aim of this silent book club is not to have a didactic or structured agenda but to share our love of reading amongst friends in a chilled space together, and on a monthly basis (for now). Suggestions for times and dates will be welcomed - please drop me a message or post a comment below! Our inaugural session is scheduled for the last Sunday of September 2024 in the courtroom cafe of St Albans Museum + Gallery - and once we find our feet, we will hopefully aim to organise a mix of sessions on different days of the week, using a variety of public spaces. If you would also like to co-organise sessions from time to time, please message me directly! NB: I also run a parallel stationery meetup group that focuses on creative journalling and that usually involves lots of chatting and socialising, but THIS group is intended to be entirely separate and there will not be any overlap of activities with that group - and of course you are absolutely welcome to join both! I really look forward to seeing you real soon :)

In particular, this group is a “Grump Free Zone” especially on Group weekends away! **ETIQUETTE** These aren't rules but advice for a friendly group 1. The walk leader sets the pace suitable for the slowest member, as long as we can complete the walk in a reasonable time. It is not a race to finish first nor a training event nor a non-stop work-out. We stop from time to time to regroup (for example after going through a gate), to have a rest, a drink or a snack, admire the view or take photos, etc. You may need extra clothing to put on for stops in colder weather. 2. We have members of different ages and genders and we like everyone to relate to each other on an equal basis. 3. We have members from different nationalities and cultures. We like to make everyone welcome and we don't quiz anyone about their background or country of origin, they can tell us if they like but this is optional. 4. Conversations on a group walk or other event can often be overheard by others so we avoid discussing anything that is out of place in a friendly social group. This would include avoiding heated debates or any discussions about controversial or unpleasant subjects that others may not wish to hear about, including religion, UK politics or politics of any other country. **WHAT TO TAKE** Most of our routes are on public footpaths in the countryside. Some of these may be slippery, muddy or stony in places. You need adequate footwear, preferably hiking boots, with thick soles and good grip. You need a waterproof jacket in case it rains and in cold weather, you also need a warm outdoor jacket and an extra layer to put on for outdoor stops. We have some info pages on what to take for day hikes and weekends away. Please see the Hiking Info [http://southhertshikers.uk/info/](http://southhertshikers.uk/info/) page on our web site for further details. **PAST EVENTS** You can find a photo album for each past event on this Meetup Group. **AFFILIATION** We are affiliated to The Ramblers [https://www.ramblers.org.uk/](https://www.ramblers.org.uk/) Hertfordshire & North Middlesex Area [https://www.hnmramblers.org.uk/](https://www.hnmramblers.org.uk/) **ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?** Please see the FAQ page [http://southhertshikers.uk/faq/](http://southhertshikers.uk/faq/) on our web site or click the Organizers [https://www.meetup.com/SouthHertsHikers/members/?op=leaders](https://www.meetup.com/SouthHertsHikers/members/?op=leaders) link on Meetup to contact the organizers via Meetup messaging.
