BACKABUSH BRISTOL - Hiking & Outdoor Adventure Meetup Group

Bristol, B7

BACKABUSH BRISTOL - Hiking & Outdoor Adventure Meetup Group
We are BACKABUSH XPLORERS, much copied but still the original and best hiking and outdoor activity Meetup group!!! **Who are we and how did it all begin?** Backabush Xplorers is Britain's longest established hiking and outdoor adventure Meetup group.  Our group was originally created back in 2002 (actually before we were on Meetup) by a multinational group of friends who loved hiking and wanted to get more out of our weekends and holidays. We wanted to share our heartfelt passion for the great outdoors and enthusiasm with others. For some years Backabush was an informal, unincorporated association managed by the founders for the benefit of its members. Our group grew rapidly in those early years and in 2008, following legal advice we decided it would be wise and prudent to become a registered company to protect our organisers and our members. Following this review and the formation of the limited company, our members can now pursue their legitimate activities and aims with complete peace of mind. **Why do we do it?** We love the outdoors! The primary motivation is fun (not profit) which means that our trips offer exceptional value for money. We continue as a group with the same ethos of organising events and trips for the benefit of our members. This is what we love and we are passionate about what we do. We will always endeavour to be budget conscious and price our activities only to cover necessary expenses. **What do we do?** Over the years we have hiked and explored the National Parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty in Britain and abroad. It may all have started years ago with a few hiking friends gathering for a weekend in a scruffy camping barn somewhere rural and pretty but it has developed a lot from there. Backabush has been hiking and enjoying outdoor adventure for well over a decade now and over this time we have organised literally hundreds of hiking trips throughout Great Britain. We have enjoyed visits to the Lake District, Snowdonia, Scotland, the Brecon Beacons, the Pembrokeshire Coast, Cornwall, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Cambrian mountains, the Wye Valley, the Forest of Dean, the North York Moors, the New Forest, the South Downs, the Malvern Hills, the Shropshire Hills, the South Downs, the Cotswolds, the Chiltern Hills, the Jurassic Coast, the Gower Peninsula, the Pennines, the Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, the Isle of Arran, Glen Shiel, Torridon etc, etc, etc. National trails and long distance paths in Britain are another favourite of ours and to date we have completed the full length of Hadrian's Wall Path, the West Highland Way, the Cumbria Way, the Herriot Way and Wainwright's Coast to Coast. Although we have yet to complete the full length of many we have also enjoyed hiking sections of the Cotswold Way, Pennine Way, Offa's Dyke Path, Limestone Way, Allerdale Ramble, South West Coast Path, Great Glen Way, Monsal Trail, South Downs Way, Ridgeway, Thames Path and many, many others. We were also trailblazers when it came to offering exciting outdoor adventures overseas. Back in 2009 we organised our very first foreign trip when we headed down into Africa to climb Mt Toubkal, the highest summit in Morocco. Next we trekked in Nepal, climbing over a 5000+ metre pass linking the Langtang and Helambu valleys. Since these early treks we went on to organise things like via ferrata holidays in the Italian Dolomites, or hiking trips to the French Alps and Jura mountains. We also love 'hut to hut' trekking and have so far completed every step of the Tour du Mt Blanc, summited Monte Perdido in the Ordessa National Park and trekked for days in the French Pyrenees to reach the awe inspiring Cirque de Gavarnie. More recently we even organised trips to Slovakia to seek out winter snowshoeing in the High Tatras and gorge scrambling in the Paradise National Park. There are many other adventures we could mention. No other Meetup group offers adventure like this! **How do the logistics work?** We know our members are busy people so we do our best to provide a complete package for you. Backabush will research the locations, the hikes, book the accommodation and make a plan for all the meals. If you do not own a car we will help you to find transport or a lift share. You just need to communicate with the organiser who will help to co-ordinate things with you. With a little co-operation from our members it all works very well and allows us to keep offering new locations and new hikes, year after year. Although we might return to some amazing National Parks quite regularly we always endeavour to find new venues and plan entirely new hikes. If you check out our past events you will see that we offer unrivalled variety in the locations we visit. **What are the hikes like?** On every Backabush trip we try to provide a choice of hikes each day. Obviously we will choose the from most beautiful and best loved hikes in any given area. These hikes tend to be of various length, duration and difficulty. The idea is that each person can choose the hike that best suits their fitness, experience and interests. It is true that Backabush has a reputation within the Meetup community for offering longer and more challenging hikes but we always also offer more moderate options for those seeking a more relaxed day outdoors. Generally speaking we would say that anyone who can hike for 10 miles in hilly terrain should be fine on our trips. If you have any concerns please don't hesitate to contact us to ask questions. **What about safety?** Safety is always our number one priority. Although we can never make the outdoor environment entirely safe there are many steps that can be taken to minimise risk. Our team of outdoor activity leaders have many, many years of leadership experience and have received extensive outdoor training. Between all of our leaders we have years of military experience, ambulance work or mountain guiding. Our principal leadership team are Mountain Leader trained at Plas-y-Brenin (the National Mountain Sports Centre) in North Wales and Winter Skills trained at Glenmore Lodge in Scotland. We regularly update our first aid qualifications and carry the required emergency aid equipment for wilderness situations. Some of us have taught or assisted on micro-navigation training courses and all have excellent route finding skills regardless of visibility or weather. Additional our experience extends to high altitude mountaineering in several continents, be it summiting 6000+ metre peaks in the Andes, conquering the highest mountains in Africa or completing month long high altitude treks in the Himalayas. We take our 'duty of care' of very seriously and are trained to deal with outdoor emergencies. Sometimes we hire in specific skills as necessary in the form of fully qualified instructors for things like rock climbing, caving, coasteering, kayaking, horse riding, ghyll scrambling or technical mountaineering. For some foreign trips we will either provide logistical support for safe self guided mountain trekking or hire International Mountain Leaders as deemed necessary.  **Who joins our trips?** Although most people in the group are in their 20s, 30s and 40s age is not an issue to us - a fun loving and adventurous nature is more important. It is not uncommon to have over a dozen different nationalities represented in a single gathering. Our groups of hikers and outdoor adventurers vary in size but on every trip some people will be regulars and some first timers. Its a great way to make new hiking friends and you need not worry about coming alone as you will always be made to feel welcome. What we all have in common is a love of all kinds of outdoor activity including hiking, trekking, hill walking, mountaineering, scrambling, camping, canoeing, canyoning, kayaking, rock climbing, scuba diving, caving, coasteering, mountain biking and just about anything else that offers some outdoor adventure. We hope YOU will join us sometime soon. **Positive vibes!** **The Backabush Crew & Hiking Team** Contact Geoff & Nathan backabushxplorers@yahoo.com nathancapay@googlemail.com

Focus: Spiritual discussion meetup

Heywood, P8

Focus: Spiritual discussion meetup
**\*\*\*PLEASE READ\*\*\*: WE ARE NOT CURRENTLY CURRENTLY ACCEPTING ANY REQUESTS TO JOIN THE GROUP AS WE ARE AT THE LIMIT OF THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WE CAN HAVE IN THE GROUP, THERE IS ALSO A WAITING LIST TO JOIN.** There are many reasons for people to band together in groups: employment, politics, religion, self-help or social activity, the list is endless. But consider this, what if the so-called 'reason' for gathering is nothing more than an elaborate camouflage, an excuse that draws together personalities of similar intent, inquisitiveness and purpose in order to experience a form of identification, a comradeship or brotherhood. We do not wish to belittle the results that groups achieve, but simply suggest that perhaps the instinctive reason that underpins our grouping together and therefore our ultimate achievements is not so much the cause but an attempt to remember that we are not separated; that we are indeed as one. We achieve results as a by-product of of grouping together. In forming this Group its founder members have attempted to bypass the camouflage and dispense with the excuses, we actively seek at-one-ness. ***We would state at the outset that this Group has absolutely no association with any other group or organisation whatsoever; it is not intended to replace any other group, we see it more as complimentary to other involvements.*** Whatever our backgrounds it is safe to say that we have been bombarded with selective information from birth. In our schooldays we were taught that religion and science were to be accepted as facts of reality instead of beliefs or theories about reality. We are all in one way or another the product of social beliefs. This group openly questions those beliefs and the so-called 'facts' that we have been raised on. We seek spiritual growth and expansion through discussion; we have come to realise that by actively changing our beliefs we most certainly change our experiences. We effectively create our own experiences ***in life*** through our beliefs and expectations ***of life***. Over the past few centuries society has increasingly developed a 'victim mentality', we are taught from the earliest age to mistrust our bodies, our environment, and just about everything that does or doesn't move! It is little wonder that an enormous amount of our Combined Wealth must now be dedicated to Health Services, Policing, Armed Forces and various Health and Safety initiatives; we have become frightened and confused. There was a time when the human race instinctively knew (in keeping with all creature-hood) that our individual and collective state of health and 'good fortune' had little to do with outside forces. As a species we have been taught to believe that mankind is at best untrustworthy and at worst downright dangerous. This has fed our lack of self worth and self trust and resulted in an ever increasing number of laws to 'protect' us from ourselves. We strongly question that hypothesis. Therefore we (as a Group) attempt to operate without rules, we prefer to trust our own common sense and impulses. We have no bosses and no dogma. We aim to provide a forum in which members can freely express themselves with no allegiance to anything save their own free will. We all came into this world with a wonderful sense of awe and anticipation, we instinctively knew our oneness; what on earth happened! Most of us have spent a good part of our lives **learning** to mistrust ourselves, learning that to 'fail' or 'to be wrong' is some sort of moral crime, we have become so fearful of making mistakes that many of us have given up trying to achieve much at all. The result has been an obsession with safety and a relinquishing of our own responsibilities; expecting others to 'fix' us, and if they don't – then we can just blame them. What if there is another way? Perhaps we came here to learn just how strong we are, just how in tune with our environment we can be. Perhaps we still instinctively know that taking risks and trusting life is the only way that we can truly achieve inner peace and value fulfilment. What if we came into this world not to be bystanders, not to live as passive 'victims' of life, but to be active participants in progressing the well being of our own lives, and in doing so to progress the well being of all life? If fear of failure and the 'victim mentality' or powerlessness, are high on the list of causes for our dissatisfaction with life, then strength or courage, and empowering action could be seen as very effective 'cures'. As a Group we actively encourage each other to 'stretch our boundaries', to question the status quo and to take positive steps to move away from mind-sets or beliefs that keep us locked into states of ill health, lack of abundance, blaming others, and general powerlessness. The power of like-minded people grouping together cannot be underestimated, we can and do achieve things together that we would consider impossible if attempted alone. Everybody has something for which they can be grateful, and most of us have a great deal to be thankful for. Focusing on what is going well in our lives will bring far better results than concentrating on what we perceive to be wrong. Hating war will never stop war, loving peace however, will. And so it is with all matters of life, approached from the ***'ain't life awful'*** angle we can't help but feel overwhelmed, but looked at from a different viewpoint, that of ***'ain't life great',*** we begin to see a different picture, our focus 'miraculously' shifts, and we begin to see aspects of life to which we were once blinded. What we concentrate on we draw toward us, concentrate on pain, hostility and lack, and that's what we get, focus on health, friendship and abundance and that will be ours also. Working together with a common purpose this Group eagerly explores the possibilities of contrary thinking and action. We believe that there has never been a better time to explore the possibilities of self-responsibility, and by that we mean responsibility for our own thinking, emotional and physical well-being, and the everyday experience of our lives. We are not allied with any particular school of thought or teachings, and actively seek new ideas and inspiration. There are however certain books that we find especially useful: Seth: The Nature of Personal Reality – Jane Roberts Power vs Force – David Hawkins The Awakening of Intelligence – Jiddu Krishnamurti Finally, we will **NEVER** try to indoctrinate you, fill you with dogma, or encourage you to do anything against your will; that would stand against the very principles upon which we operate. We are all free spirits of the universe. **Meetings are held online on Thursday evenings between 7 and 8pm.**

The meditation is based on connecting with the inner chakras (energy centres) and **balancing the subtle body**. The tradition and aims of meditation are explained which in essence is to be in the present with **no mental activity or thoughts** about the past or the future. Occasionally there are 1 day retreats to help those interested, deepen their individual experience and hear advice and tips from those who have been practicing for some time. It’s ultimately all about getting into ‘thoughtless awareness’, a **natural state** of being. We have a web site in London too which you can visit if you are ever there for more info about weekly meetings:[www.sahajayogalondon.co.uk](http://www.sahajayogalondon.co.uk/) Join us on [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/London.Free.Meditation) and [Twitter](https://twitter.com/SahajL)

Southwest Trekking and Hiking Group

Southwest Trekking and Hiking Group
This is a friendly sociable Walking and Hiking group for enthusiastic regular active **Adult walkers** (18 years old and over) who have a shared love of the outdoors and the desire to explore new places on foot with like minded people. (Group members will need to provide a clear profile photo of 'their face' when applying to join the group so that group organisers can identify them, and will be declined without this. See further T&C's). The Southwest Trekking and Hiking Group is run on a voluntary basis by a group of friends who are experienced walk hosts who have led hundreds of walks between them. With walks across the Southwest and into the mountains of Wales, to include the Cotswolds, Wiltshires White Horses, Iron Age Hillforts, to Stonehenge and Avebury, Somerset with the Mendips, Exmoor and coast paths, hills valleys and waterfalls... I hope we have a great selection of walks for everyone. Walk group sizes are generally kept smaller at around 15 people, but could vary depending on difficulty or if it's a recce, and numbers are at the discretion of the walk host. Walks are graded as either Leisurely, Moderate, or Strenuous, depending on the difficulty of the terrain, hills, and length of the walk combined, with typical walks ranging between 5 to 12 miles with some as long as 20 miles, depending on the requests of the members. There have also been trips further afield staying away in North Wales. **Terms & Conditions of joining the Southwest Trekking and Hiking Group are listed fully on the separate information Message Board pages from the 'More' drop down menu, but some are listed below, but not limited to these:** You must have a visible profile photo to join the group. (This is preferred to be of yourself and not a group photo, and should NOT be a photo containing children). \*\*\* We understand that for many reasons people do not want to be seen/publish a photo of themselves on group media so the group 'may' accept other photos in certain circumstances, however photos are taken during walks by other members and these are often loaded onto the walk photos during or after the event. (Please direct message the group Organiser Neil Earley to agree the use of another profile photo). If agreed to use a different photo than of your face, ie a cartoon meme etc, you must have the rights to use the photo and not the property of someone else. You must abide by the advice of the host whilst participating in the events listed.  No form of Discrimination will be tolerated within this group **(see full T&Cs on the Message Board Pages)** **By requesting to join this group you do so entirely at your own risk** and accept that although the leader may be an experienced host, they can not watch all members at all times, and that you are walking with the group of friends by your choice, and you will not do anything, or omit to do something that can endanger yourself or others within the group. **Terrain** can be uneven, slippery with trip hazards and there may be stiles to climb over and roads to cross and sometimes walk along. (You are responsible for crossing roads by yourself and not following others without looking for traffic) Suitable footwear and clothing is your responsibility, and although the host reserves the right to refuse you to start the walk, you can not hold the host responsible for injuries you could sustain from your choice of footwear/clothing. **Livestock** to include Cows, sheep and horses may be in the fields that the Public Footpath or Permitted right of way cross's, and although the public have a right to cross the land, the group and walk host can not be held responsible for how wild animals may react and you should not approach livestock whilst crossing these fields. PUBLIC ADVICE IS TO NEVER RUN ACROSS OR AWAY FROM CATTLE OR HORSES, AS THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO CHASE PEOPLE. You are responsible for closing ALL gates behind you, especially where Livestock are present. If **dogs** are allowed on a walk, they should be kept on a lead and you are responsible for lifting your dog over stiles if there are no dog access points and you must clean up after your dog if it fouls public paths, footpaths including footpaths across farmers fields. You are responsible for your transport to and from the meeting place and if you choose to lift share it is your decision. We the Walking Team reserve the right to remove members from the group if they no longer participate in the groups events (Do not log-in and look for 3 months, or do not walk for 6 months) If you turn off Meetup notifications you can not hold the group responsible for missing event changes such as cancellations or change to start times due to weather warnings or other similar unplanned reasons.
