The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. AMC is the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization. The CT Chapter of AMC is a statewide organization that has something for everyone who loves to explore the outdoors, for beginners or experts. We offer hiking, kayaking, cycling, trail building and maintenance and land conservation activities throughout the year. So, what sets us apart?

• Trained leaders means our activities are organized, everyone stays together as a group assisting each other as needed and we follow certain safety protocols.

• Group activities are open to everyone (so long as you meet the fitness and equipment requirements).

Events listed as Young Members are designed for members ages 20-40 but all AMC events are open to all ages.

The Hiking Group - CT & NY

This is a group for anyone interested in hiking (most of our members are 50 years old and older). All skills levels are welcome. We started this group to meet other outdoor enthusiasts. Looking forward to exploring the outdoors with everybody. PLEASE make sure you have a CLEAR PHOTO of yourself on your profile picture. This is REQUIRED so that you can easily be recognized. Every weekend we offer hikes of varying degrees of difficulty. Hike are free for members (membership only $10) and $2 per hike for non-members. Sometimes we stop at a restaurant for supper after the hike. "C" hikes are the easiest with minimal elevation and duration (2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours). "B" hikes are more challenging in terms of elevation & duration (2 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours). "A" hikes are the most challenging (4 to 6 1/2 hours). Hiking boots or sturdy footwear & a backpack are strongly recommended. Bring liquids and a trail lunch. Children are welcome. It's up to the hike leader if dogs are allowed. Please give yourself plenty of time, to find us, since we only wait an extra 10 minutes, before starting an event, to be fair to everyone. You are responsible, for your own safety and we cannot be held liable. The leader normally goes to the "meet" rather than the "carpool" site. People are expected to "self-assemble" and leave the "carpool" site to arrive at the "Meet" site on time. All questions concerning a particular hike can and should be addressed with the leader for that hike.

We'll be doing a variety of activities, so there should be something that everyone can enjoy! **Event No-Show Policy:** If you're RSVP'd to an event and are unable to attend for any reason, please change your RSVP, post in the event, or send the event host a message. Failure to notify the event host prior to the event start time will be noted, which several consecutive no-shows may result in your removal from the group. In addition, if an event has an attendance cap, with people on the waiting list, at least a 24-hour notice is required. Any notice less than 24-hours will be considered a no-show. However, if a reservation was made, a no-show or less than a 4-hour notice may cause your immediate removal from the group.

Permaculture is a self-sufficient lifestyle and design philosophy centered around Earth care, people care, and fair share.

The Arc of Southington, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1954. As an active local chapter of The Arc, our mission and focus is to serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. The group began with parents sharing their information and experiences raising their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and we wanted to be there to support them. Originally known as The Southington Association for Retarded Children, it was later renamed The Southington Association for Retarded Citizens. In 1993 the name was changed to The Arc of Southington to remove the word “retarded” in keeping with the name changes of both The Arc of CT and The Arc of the United States. What began as a support group and volunteer organization has evolved into a human service agency providing advocacy, education, information, and an array of quality and individualized support to people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our vision is for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to receive inclusive education, appropriate quality support, inclusion in all aspects of community life, and empowerment to live the lives they choose.

WHAT WE DO

Our members host all types of activities all around the state. We hike, kayak, paint, drink, eat, play cards and games, picnic, walk our dogs, talk, dish, commiserate, debate, sing, carve pumpkins, DANCE, dress up, dress down, dress in costume, see plays and movies, and sometimes even take trips.

HOW TO JOIN

Make sure your display name includes a first name and last initial (or more), completion of the profile questions, and a clear photo of your face to join. If you are declined, check your photo and make sure you meet membership criteria. You can ask for membership again after updating your photo or other issues.

You must be both woman-identified (living openly as a woman) AND non-heterosexual to join this group. Trans people who fit those criteria are also welcome. While we do enjoy spending time with our male and heterosexual friends, this group is for a specific part of the community.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

All of our events are hosted by a club member. Members can expect to be greeted and introduced to other members at all of our events (except perhaps those that involve massive public crowds). Please keep your photo updated so hosts can identify you at events.

We are no longer requiring annual dues.

HOW DO EVENTS WORK?

Anyone can create an event, or act as host at a larger community event. You can create your own event for coffee at the Starbucks near you, or invite other people to join you for Karaoke Night at your local bar. We encourage all members to plan and host events. We have several very active event organizers, others who only organize one type of event. Sometimes events are specified for a particular subgroup (ex: Parents, Vegans) and that's okay, too.

Most events are adults-only. Nursing mothers may ask their host if bringing their infant is appropriate. Older babies, children, minors, and men are not welcome at our events unless specifically mentioned by the event host. [Occasionally personal friends are invited to someone's home-based event. Sometimes an activity is child-appropriate or for families. Sometimes a bi-friendly event might specify that it will allow men.]

Members are sometimes permitted to bring a guest or two to an event. Please be careful about which other lesbian/bi/queer women you bring to our events, as you are responsible for you guest’s behavior.

PHOTO PRIVACY POLICY

We take photos of members enjoying our events and post them to this private meetup site. Only other members can view the photos. If you do not want your photograph taken, please immediately and politely let the photographer know. We will not remove photos that members find disagreeable.

Please do not post meetup event photos or tag our members in posts on your personal social media accounts (like Facebook) without permission from every person in the photo/post, including anyone in the background. Some people are not out.

We started this group in order to provide photography instruction and workshops dedicated to improving both your SOOC (straight out of the camera) images and your post-processing. We are very active in the photographic community and enjoy helping others find the joy and satisfaction in taking and making photographs with impact. All cameras are welcome. We have people come with mobile photos, dSLRs, mirrorless, point&shoot, film cameras, etc. We are excited to have an opportunity to inspire you with their "Creativity is contagious, pass it on" philosophy and their “Don’t shoot what it looks like, shoot what it feels like” approach.

Bio

Lisa Cuchara, PhD, Cr.Photog.*, HonNEC, and Tom Cuchara, MNEC, are passionate about photography, both behind the lens and in the digital darkroom. They have diverse creative interests ranging from Nature, Macro and Night photography to Urban exploration, people, and creative editing. From birds and flowers to babies and HDR, they appreciate the world around them and embrace the challenge of interpreting what their eyes see and their hearts feel via their photography.

Tom and Lisa are both very active in many local and national photography organizations. They have had many successful gallery exhibitions and their work has been accepted into various juried exhibitions. Their photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life, Wild Bird, Birder’s World, in calendars and on calendar covers, and on the cover of a paperback novel. Lisa has also had images accepted into the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) loan collection and this year earned Double Bronze with 4/4 open and 4/4 Artistry Images Meriting. Their images have won awards at the local, state, national, and international levels. They have been photographing weddings, babies, parties, portraits, etc. professionally for over 15 years and have their own Photography Studio in Hamden CT. Their portrait philosophy is based on “We do not remember days, we remember Moments”.

They teach photography a variety of image capture and post-processing workshops and seminars, in the classroom and in the field. They have presented a variety of instructional programs and workshops (Photoshop, Digital Workflow, HDR, RAW processing, Macro photography, Travel photography, plus fun and interesting travelogue slideshows) at NECCC, PPA, PSA, plus many other camera clubs and other organizations.
