Appalachian Mountain Club - Connecticut Chapter (CT AMC)

Southbury, CT

Appalachian Mountain Club - Connecticut Chapter (CT AMC)

The Appalachian Mountain Club's Connecticut Chapter organizes about 1,000 hikes, bike rides, mountaineering and other events each year. Most of these do not appear in this Meetup. To get details of all of our events and to join our email lists please go to www.CT-AMC.org

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. AMC is the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization. The CT Chapter of AMC is a statewide organization that has something for everyone who loves to explore the outdoors, for beginners or experts. We offer hiking, kayaking, cycling, trail building and maintenance and land conservation activities throughout the year. So, what sets us apart?

• Trained leaders means our activities are organized, everyone stays together as a group assisting each other as needed and we follow certain safety protocols.

• Group activities are open to everyone (so long as you meet the fitness and equipment requirements).

Events listed as Young Members are designed for members ages 20-40 but all AMC events are open to all ages.

This Meetup group is sponsored by members of the AMC Connecticut Chapter. For additional information about AMC, the CT Chapter and the activities we-sponsor, please visit www.ct-amc.org. Thru the year, we offer more than 1000 activities. All current activities are listed on our website for each activity committee. For example, current hiking activites including skiing and snowshoeing are shown on the chapter website. The AMC web site (www.outdoors.org) has further information about the main club including lodging, adventure travel, and more.

Just a reminder that only AMC-approved leaders may lead activities that will be listed on this site. We can allow others to co-lead activities with an approved leader. If you are interested in becoming an approved leader, the next leader training is always shown on our website.

Please note: Some events are marked "Registration Required". An RSVP here does not satisfy this requirement. Registration requires direct contact with the event leader, either by email or phone.

The Hiking Group - CT & NY

Southbury, CT

The Hiking Group - CT & NY
This is a group for anyone interested in hiking (most of our members are 50 years old and older). All skills levels are welcome. We started this group to meet other outdoor enthusiasts. Looking forward to exploring the outdoors with everybody. PLEASE make sure you have a CLEAR PHOTO of yourself on your profile picture. This is REQUIRED so that you can easily be recognized. Every weekend we offer hikes of varying degrees of difficulty. Hike are free for members (membership only $10) and $2 per hike for non-members. Sometimes we stop at a restaurant for supper after the hike. "C" hikes are the easiest with minimal elevation and duration (2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours). "B" hikes are more challenging in terms of elevation & duration (2 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours). "A" hikes are the most challenging (4 to 6 1/2 hours). Hiking boots or sturdy footwear & a backpack are strongly recommended. Bring liquids and a trail lunch. Children are welcome. It's up to the hike leader if dogs are allowed. Please give yourself plenty of time, to find us, since we only wait an extra 10 minutes, before starting an event, to be fair to everyone. You are responsible, for your own safety and we cannot be held liable. The leader normally goes to the "meet" rather than the "carpool" site. People are expected to "self-assemble" and leave the "carpool" site to arrive at the "Meet" site on time. All questions concerning a particular hike can and should be addressed with the leader for that hike.

Singles Social Connections
Hi There, Singles Social Connections' goal is to give singles the opportunity to have fun and increase their circle of friends. We sponsor numerous activities such as dances, house parties, walks, and picnics. We offer a relaxed, comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for you and other singles to socialize and have fun. Many singles attend events as we also advertise in newspapers and other singles venues. You'll find that we are an intelligent, friendly, fun loving group of singles in our late 40's, 50's, and 60's. Many other singles attend events besides the Meetup members that respond. This is because we also advertise our activities in newspapers and have our flyers at other single events in the area. Come join us at one of our events and find out for yourself! Annual dues are $40 and the club’s membership year is from January 1st to December 31st. It includes reduced event fees and emails on upcoming events. You do not have to pay membership dues to come to any event. If someone reserves for an event and does not show up or cancel, a 'No Show' will be put after their name. The number of 'No Shows' will appear after their name for other organizers to see when they are scheduling an event. Once someone has 3 'No Shows,' they will be blocked from attending any Singles Social Connections' future events. So, please cancel your reservation ASAP when you find that you cannot attend an event. Thanks. See you at an event, Gail 😊

Permaculture/Sustainable Living Group

Watertown, CT

Permaculture/Sustainable Living Group

If you're tired of literally twiddling your thumbs on social media and Netflix, here is a relatively safe outdoor/online group for those near Waterbury, CT! This is the place to learn how to be self-sufficient by growing your own tasty, self-sustaining garden and saving the world while you're at it! Fellow hippies and science lovers, if you are interested in meditation, yoga, or wellness, here you can meet your own kind.

Cheapscates and couch potatoes, are you tired of lawn work? Why not replace the parched wasteland with edible plants that maintain themselves?! No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or any chemical inputs are required when the soil and plants are made healthy. Even weeding and replanting are hardly necessary! Don't believe me - just watch! There are demonstration sites in the area we can visit that practice edible landscaping and also plenty of online videos we can discuss. Grooving to Uptown Funk is also a possibility.

Edible landscaping is a down-to-earth (literally) way to exercise, have fun with your family, connect with nature, restore the environment, save time and money going grocery shopping, and eat local, nutritious, organic, FREE food. You could even have a side gig by selling your extra food!

This is the group for anyone interested in solving large-scale societal, personal, and environmental problems on their own property with people they actually know (not distant, orange big-wigs who are just in it for the money)! Permaculture is a self-sufficient lifestyle and design philosophy centered around Earth care, people care, and fair share.

Whether you are familiar or not with permaculture, you will become aware of its practices, ranging from cohousing, cotransportation, renewable energy, local manufacturing, zero waste, mindfulness, alternative therapies/medicine, and of course, edible landscaping. Prepare to have your life turned upside down - the grass (Er, I mean edible landscape) is greener on the other side!
