Kansas City, MO

Sierra Club | Kansas City | Backpacking | Hiking | Service
**This Meetup site manages trip announcements and sign-ups.** We offer various outdoor programs, including beginner backpacking in spring and fall. Our modern backpacking equipment library and wilderness navigation support these programs, and we also organize backpacking trips, day hikes, service days, and other activities. We are part of the National Sierra Club's "Local Outdoors" program and organize outdoor activities. These outings (a/k/a "trips") are focused on the KC Area community and are designed to be inclusive. We are closely affiliated with the Sierra Club's Thomas Hart Benton and the Kanza & Wakarusa groups. We aim to welcome individuals from all backgrounds, and many of our members are committed to conservation, equity, and social welfare advocacy. Our activities happen at places whose current names we can see on Google Maps, e.g., Missouri and Kansas. We know the people living there are Missourians and Kansans. Historically, it's worth noting that these areas could have had different names, and the people living there could have had other names, too. Here is a [helpful mapping tool to consider these matters](https://native-land.ca/), [another referencing many established, well-known trails re: these matters](https://pnts.org/new/native-lands-national-trails/) and [a resource for additional perspective](https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360/about/understandings). Are you looking for a way to connect with nature, meet new people, or get some exercise? Sierra Club's local outings with us and [inter/national trips](https://content.sierraclub.org/outings/) have something for everyone. Join Sierra Club on an outing today! While you do not have to be a Sierra Club member to join this meetup group or participate in the outings, we [welcome you to join for as little as $15](https://tinyurl.com/jointtheclub) as it supports the overall Sierra Club, including the Local Outdoors program. We sometimes ask for small donations to cover the costs of training our outing leaders in various areas, such as Wilderness First Aid, and maintaining our gear lending library for backpacking courses. It's important to note that the Sierra Club is a Section 501(c)(4) non-profit organization under the Internal Revenue Code, which means that any donations made are not tax-deductible. Additionally, our leaders are unpaid volunteers who generously give their time to lead these outings. Concerning backpacking, in addition to the beginning backpacking program, our leaders host beginning and higher backpacking locally and sometimes regionally, with regular options for big league trips on [Sierra Club inter/national outings](https://content.sierraclub.org/outings/), for which our local outings can help prepare you. Those backpacking trips we put on locally/regionally are often to provide a progression to those who have completed the beginning backpacking program and also for leaders to get away and do team-building. Our leaders are volunteers and organize diverse activities according to their interests. Day hikes, cycling, backpacking, and camping are some of our activities. Still, we also participate in other activities such as picking up trash, bird watching, clearing brush along a hiking trail, crawling in a cave, or eradicating invasive vegetation. You can feel confident that our leaders are certified for outings leadership, including the first aid training required for the level of the outing they are leading, and they complete structured pre-trip planning. Due to certification requirements, only our leaders may create outings. However, please suggest nature—or conservation-oriented outings; one of our leaders may make them happen. To make sure everything runs smoothly during our outings, RSVP in advance. So that you know, we do not accept walk-ins. Leaders have the final say before and during the outing, and they may require certain minimums for fitness, experience, and equipment. We will give you all the relevant information to set clear expectations, and we appreciate your cooperation in following the instructions. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to seeing you on our next outing! Minors can join many day hikes, but only if they are accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult. Please check the outing description to see if it allows minors. Sierra Club has a policy regarding pets on outings. Generally, pets, especially dogs, are prohibited unless the outing specifies otherwise. However, service animals are permitted and are not considered pets. Outdoor activities occur more frequently in late spring and fall/winter and decrease during summer when leaders take personal trips or go on the water. For the safety of all individuals, please be aware that firearms are strictly prohibited during outings. Carpooling is encouraged among participants, but it is important to note that carpooling arrangements are strictly private and not covered by Sierra Club's insurance. As such, the club assumes no liability for any issues arising from carpooling or ride-sharing arrangements. All Sierra Club outing participants must sign a standard participant agreement as part of the sign-in process. This agreement will be linked in individual Outing announcements; you can easily review it before signing it. You must complete a medical form if you plan to go on a backcountry, overnight, or day trip more than an hour away from an emergency medical facility. The trip leader will review the form and respect your privacy. We take the privacy of our participants very seriously and ensure that the responses on the form are kept confidential. In emergencies, the form will be available during the trip. After the trip, we will either return or delete the form. Whenever possible, we prefer to collect medical forms at the trailhead. However, for backpacking trips, we need to conduct a more thorough vetting process of the participants to ensure everyone's safety. Therefore, we require the medical forms to be filled out and submitted upfront for backpacking trips. It is essential to prioritize the health and safety of everyone attending an outing. So, individuals who feel unwell or display symptoms of any contagious illness are asked not to participate in the outing. \-\-\-\-\- Please immediately let the outing leader know if you have any concerns during or after an outing. If you receive an unwelcome message from another member on Meetup, Meetup provides some guidance on individual action. Also, please don't hesitate to contact us if you need more help. This group is committed to posting events supporting the Sierra Club and those interested in participating.

Kansas City Adventure Club

Kansas City, KS

Kansas City Adventure Club

Hello!

And welcome to the Adventure Club. We are a bunch of semi normal people looking to explore, exercise, and just have fun. We are not limited to any particular sport or event, so if you have an idea, let us know. We will try to match up the different fitness levels with other members. And that works best if we have a large active group. But be ready to sweat and push your comfort zone.

All outdoor activities are sought after. So if you are looking for backpacking, camping, biking (road and mountain), hiking, rock climbing, skiing, scuba, sailing, flying, outdoor photography, kayaking, shooting, or anything else having to do with adventure or fun, then this may be the place. but it depends on you!

I'm hoping all of you, including the inactive ones (you know who you are.), will contact me. Please bring your thoughts, knowledge, and fun ideas. Last minute ideas are welcome too. How many times have you gone biking alone? No need to do that anymore. Please send me an email and introduce yourself, a little about why you joined, and how I can help you.

The best way to make this club work for you, is to post messages (questions, thought, ideas, advice) on the boards about what it is you like to do. Tell us your goals. Then tell me, and the club, when you would like to get a group together to enjoy the event.

I've learned that most people would rather sit and wait for someone else to post a meetup. Or they talk themselves out of attending due to a million and one reasons. Please, please, please, don't do that. That is a good way to get yourself removed from the club. Let me add - No-Shows suck! Talking yourself out of attending is also a good way to hold yourself back from many positive things. Be an active member! Have fun. Make friends. Even host an event every now and then. (highly encouraged) It's not hard. It's a great way to meet others. And you get to pick the place and activity!

Welcome aboard. I'll see you outside.

Women bonded together by challenging themselves in the outdoors. Women who naturally encouraged one another and connected right away. Women who live to LIVE.     🦸‍♀️ The friendships are REAL.   🦸‍♀️ The vulnerability on the trails is REAL.   🦸‍♀️ The empowerment is REAL.   🦸‍♀️ The personal growth is REAL.   🦸‍♀️ The cuss words, inside jokes, and SHE-naningans are REAL.     And we’ve been doing it since 2014! That year, Explorer Chick founder, Nicki Bruckmann was a wife, cat mom and home owner who worked full-time in corporate finance. Instead of feeling fulfilled by ticking all the boxes, she found herself feeling stifled. She made the choice to break away from it all and step out of that life. To figure things out, she needed a vacation reset. But not just any vacation. She wanted something that would feed her adventurous soul and push boundaries. But the thing about divorce? You lose that built-in travel buddy. Believing that other women must also be in the same situation; craving adventure and travel and not wanting to do it all alone, she launched Explorer Chick! [Check out the whole story here](https://explorerchick.com/about/the-explorer-chick-story/#:~:text=The%20Explorer%20Chick%20Story%20In%20a%20former%20life%2C,buy%20homes%20from%20the%20Sears%20catalog%21%29%20in%20Cincinnati.). Launching in 2015, Explorer Chick ran one trip with three bold ladies looking for adventure. From there, this amazing community of women continues to grow, and in 2022 more than 1100 women traveled with us on 133 trips over 5 continents!    Whether you arrive as a solo traveler or with several of your closest gal pals, you’ll be greeted by a group of like-minded women travelers of all ages who love to go hiking, camping, rafting, backpacking, canyoning, surfing, kayaking, climbing and more. Basically, we’re all in on anything that gets us outdoors and active!   We travel the US National Parks and bucket list destinations like Iceland, Jordan, Galapagos, Croatia, Uganda and so many more.   The best part? You are taken care of by Explorer Chick’s professional, certified guides. They handle all the details: from food to accommodations to gear and extra words of encouragement when you need them the most. No rentals. **Paddle KC is an ACA Paddle America Club using the Meetup platform to manage frequent events. We are not a standard "Meetup group" so be sure to read this group description and also event descriptions.**  We’re a friendly, diverse, inclusive group of people who kayak, standup paddleboard or canoe, and who enjoy staying active outdoors. Members are single and married men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Kids and dogs are welcome at most events. We walk our talk of following paddlesport recommended practices, including wearing life jackets while paddling. Our Organizer and many Event Hosts have completed skills and safety training. **Membership is only $20 a year for an individual or family (spouses and kids). You receive a free 30 day trial membership to check out our paddling club.** After 30 days, you'll see an option to pay the $20 membership fee to remain in the group. This fee helps us cover the many costs of running this active volunteer group, and filters in those who value the amazing variety and quality of activities, information, and learning opportunities we provide. The membership fee is non-refundable. To add a family member to your membership, put their name(s) in your Paddle KC group profile Question #3 ("Family memb?"). The Meetup site doesn't offer an automated family membership option, or even the option to add another question, so we use this (clunky) workaround for now. **Membership benefits are based on participation**, so RSVP for an event after you join the group. If you don't see a paddling activity of interest that works with your schedule, suggest one!  Examples of activities: • **Kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, canoeing**. Sometimes planned in advance, sometimes last-minute invitations. Some casual social paddles, some endurance paddles of 20-some miles or multiple days, and occasional whitewater runs.  • **Skills and safety training** provided during events as well as classes. • **Day, weekend, or longer paddling trips** to local places, state parks, national parks, or interesting destinations.  • **Occasional social events** like happy hours, game nights and visits to local attractions. • **Unique trips and local activities** created just for our group of paddling friends. If you are the adventurous sort, you'll love this group! Nothing crazy or unsafe, but very cool activities.  • A few of our annual and recurring events: Ozark River Trips, Kayaking Games Day, Demo Days, Skills Clinics, Full Moon and Night Paddles, Underground Kayaking, Dog Paddles, Yoga & Paddle, Missouri River trips, Oktoberfest Mo River Hop. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  We have simple and reasonable guidelines for all PADDLE KC members. These "rules" help ensure a great experience for you and also our volunteers who plan and host activities that we all enjoy.  **1) Read and follow group and event instructions**. It's your responsibility to read and follow event instructions, including any specific requirements. **2) Post a CLOSEUP photo of your face and use your real first name** (or what you go by in real life) on your PADDLE KC profile enabling other members to easily recognize you. We're a friendly group and recognizable photos and real names are important. NO fake names, group shots, covered face, stylized photo filters, vertical cropping where only the top of your head shows, or distant photos that don't clearly show your face. If you don't want to be recognized or object to providing a clear photo showing your face or your real first name, this is not the group for you. If you have trouble adding a photo using your phone, try on a pc browser. **3) Manage your RSVPs to avoid frequent no-shows and frequent last-minute changes to No**. Be considerate and respectful to other members, volunteer event hosts, community partners, and venues who are impacted by no-shows or last-minute RSVP changes. If you do change your Yes RSVP to No frequently, or no-show (RSVP Yes but don’t show up) frequently, or RSVP for multiple events that occur at the same time, you will be removed from Paddle KC. You are also responsible for your guests' RSVPs, so encourage them to join the group so you aren't impacted by their RSVP changes or no-shows. **4) Participate**. This group is for active paddlers who get together to share paddling experiences. We host events all year - up to 170 events annually! Sign up and show up! You'll have a great time!  **5) Be considerate and nice to members, hosts and venues**. We are a friendly, welcoming bunch and treat others well. We welcome diversity and those who participate in a positive way. Negative or disruptive influences will be removed.  **6) Do not sell at or promote at members**. We are here to socialize and enjoy time on the water with PADDLE KC members. No sales pitches or promoting products, services, events, or other groups without approval of the group Organizer. If you show up just to plug outside activities or groups, or use group information for marketing purposes, you'll be removed. Just show up and have a good time. If you do have a product or service that you believe will benefit members, contact the Organizer. These simple, common-sense guidelines are based on many years of experience in coordinating group events, and help ensure a great experience for all of us. I look forward to seeing you on the water soon. Let's have a good time!
