Washington Women Outdoors

Washington Women Outdoors (WWO) is a non-profit organization founded in the Fall of 1977 and recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) in the Spring of 1979, that is run almost entirely by volunteers. We engage in outdoor activities in the Washington, DC area where women share skills, experience, strengths, and support to enhance and expand each woman's world. We welcome women of diverse ages, races, and lifestyles. WWO provides instruction by women for women. Activities are available for all skill levels to inspire the beginner and to challenge the more advanced.

WWO members are independent women who seek adventure in the outdoors. We have a passion for hiking, biking, rock climbing, caving, backpacking, kayaking, cross country skiing, horseback riding, hang gliding, and anything that tests our strength and broadens our horizons. We enjoy meeting new people who want to travel with us to beautiful places in the wilderness. If you are open to learning new things in a supportive environment and enjoy sharing the outdoors with other women, we invite you to join us.

WWO is different than typical Meetup groups. We scout our hiking and biking trips. Each trip is led by two leaders. One leader stays at the front of the group and the second leader is the sweep. Each participant is encouraged to participate at her own pace, and the sweep is there to ensure that no one is left behind. We want each participant to go at their own pace so that they enjoy their experience and come back to the outdoors.

Outdoor Vineyard Visits

Alexandria, VA

Outdoor Vineyard Visits
For those that are aged 40 and up following CDC guidelines. This is a meetup to provide outdoor enjoyment with wine and good conversation during these crazy years.  A shared love of the grape ;). We have a medley of events from area vineyards to wine tastings locally in Fairfax, Clifton and Arlington. Our hosts bring their expertise in helping plan for fun places and sharing of good wine. Please note that over the year we've had several folk sign up for events and then not show. Please, keep your RSVP current (going or waitlist) so that others have the opportunity to attend. Many of our gatherings are not large so signing up and not showing is something we'd rather not see and will remove the member from the group if a "no show". Everyone has ample time to update their RSVP or at a minimum, contact any host or even message on the event page. If it was something really unforeseeable, please let us know after the event and we'll update the membership. I think it's great there are so many who enjoy the vineyards and we just want to ensure others on the waitlist have ample time to plan and join as well. If there are no limits on an event, being a no-show doesn't matter... it's the ones we put together with the vineyards that have limits that do. Thanks. Policy 11/10/2022 When an event has been scheduled and a payment made, any no-shows/late cancellation will be removed. A late cancellation is defined as one within hours of the event the day of.  You can notify your host in advance if you are having an issue but the best policy is to make sure your RSVP is current and you cancel with enough notice so another might join. For the other events, the second no-show/late cancellation for unpaid events will be removed.

SOFTISH- Sistas Over Forty Trekking In Search of Healing

Clinton, MD

SOFTISH- Sistas Over Forty Trekking In Search of Healing
The women in this group have at least 3 things in common; 1\. They love \(or are curious about\) hiking\. 2\. They're on a mission to heal parts of their lives by using the great outdoors as one of their tools\. 3\. They've reached 40 years or more and enjoy bonding with other women who are also learning about the myriad of ways our bodies and lifestyles are changing\.\.\. for the better\! Whether you're an avid hiker hoping to go even further or just looking for a great experience for your first time on a wooded trail, you'll find it here. As a Black woman who grew up in urban areas in the DMV, I was not exposed to the pleasures and healing powers of hiking beyond my local city streets. Yet, our area is rich with outdoor adventure just around the corner, and I want to help you get familiar with exploring them for yourself. I'm also entering a new stage of life, perimenopause, and I specialize in midlife women's hormonal health with an emphasis on metabolic issues. As my body adjusts to this transition, I'd love to both share and learn in community with my sistas. Our collective wisdom, keeps us informed, connected and stronger together to maintain our health. Many of us have had some challenging paths to get to this point in life and pressure from society for Black women to be and do everything for everybody can make life even harder. So I decided to create this sacred space for us to lean into a softer side of life. Where we can choose how hard we want to hike while also allowing ourselves time to speak freely, dance, laugh, explore and share as women who support each others "Softish" era. Welcome home, you big Softie! We will have a variety of events to accommodate different fitness abilities as well as social events from time to time, and maybe even a few retreats. Information about trail location, conditions, best practices, hiking gear, prep and recovery are shared freely with lively videos, pictures and tutorials. This group was created to serve women and especially Black women to increase our awareness and usage of this amazing natural resource for healing our minds, bodies, spirits and communities. All women of color and the colorful women who support them (allies) are welcome!
