The Great Outdoors

Durham, NC

The Great Outdoors
**Who/What we are:** Welcome to The Great Outdoors! We are a group with vast interests: walking, hiking, day trips, camping, cycling, conservation, paddling, trail maintenance, backpacking, birding, water activities, and nature. We offer hikes from easy 4-6 mile half-day hikes to challenging, fast-paced all-day hikes, as well as overnight camping/hiking trips. Our hikes offer something for everyone-exercise, nature, companionship, and adventure. **The leadership team** is a group of volunteers with years of experience and a passion for the outdoors. **Membership Fees:** There isn't a fee to join this group. The Meetup administrative costs are paid for by the organizer. Donations are not required but certainly appreciated. If you're interested in joining: * You must be 21 years or older to join the group. * We believe you can have fun and adventure while being safe and responsible. We don't condone or engage in careless, reckless, or irresponsible activities or behaviors. Respect other members' privacy and personal boundaries. * Keep a recognizable photo of yourself on your profile. * Please show courtesy and respect to the other members of the group. If you sign up for an event, we expect you will be there, on time. If your plans change, please update your RSVP to allow others to sign up for an event. Members who are "No Shows" or cancel last minute more than 3 times may be removed from the group. * You have read and understand the Participant Waiver of Liability * You understand the importance of remaining hydrated and are responsible for bringing enough water to stay hydrated when participating in activities. * You understand the importance of wearing weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy boots/shoes. **General Information:** **Dogs:** Well-behaved dogs on 6 ft. leashes (not flex) are welcome to attend. No more than 1 dog per person. For the safety of the hikers and dogs of our group and others, dogs must remain on leash per NC state park rules. **Capping events:** While we want nothing more than for everyone to participate in every event, for multiple reasons, safety being #1, we do cap events. It is at the discretion of each event organizer. We take into consideration: safety, difficulty, location, duration, and activity. We want events to be an enjoyable experience, including others enjoying the great outdoors. We don't want to crowd the trails or spaces. As a courtesy to the event organizer and the other members, please don't show up unless you are on the "Attending" list. **Minimum requirements for some events:** For difficult/strenuous level events we do require members to have reached a minimum number of events with the group to attend. We will base the minimum number based on the event. This is for safety reasons. **Inclement Weather:** Our events are rain or shine. It is at the discretion of the event organizer to cancel an event due to inclement weather. If an event is canceled, the event organizer will send an email to the participants via Meetup and cancel the event in Meetup prior to the event. Check your email and Meetup on the day of the event. **Leave No Trace:** Our events are Leave No Trace. Leave nothing behind but your footprints. Take nothing but pictures and memories. Everything you bring with you should be carried back out and deposited in the nearest trash can. Other people do not want to see our trash. Our events sometimes include historic sites. Take nothing with you. Not even a seemingly insignificant item in the dirt. Leave it for others to see. They are also generally protected by law. Respect wildlife and observe from a distance. Never feed or touch wildlife. Be considerate of other visitors. **Trail Etiquette:** Hiking is one of the best ways to spend time in the great outdoors. The opportunities to get outdoors and take part in activities are nearly endless. Proper hiking etiquette helps instill respect for other trail users, and it promotes stewardship of the land. * Announce joggers/runners: If you're at the front or rear of the group, go to the right side of the trail and let the jogger/runner pass to the left of you. * Passing people on the trail: Call out “passing to the left” so the person can go to the right of the trail. * Wait at trail intersections: For safety reasons, wait for the others to catch up. * Be respectful of both nature and other people, and keep the noise from electronic devices at bay. Not only will other visitors appreciate the peace and quiet, but so will the wildlife. Many wildlife species rely on natural sounds for communication purposes, and disrupting those sounds can hurt their chances of survival. **Liability Waiver:** Participation in any activity with The Great Outdoors is at your own risk. To the fullest extent allowed by law, you waive any claims against and agree to indemnify and hold harmless The Great Outdoors, its organizers, affiliates, employees, officers, directors, and contractors, from all claims of liability of every type (including court costs and legal fees) for injury or death to any person or for damage to property arising out of or relating to your participation as a member. This agreement applies to you and any other party who may accompany you in these endeavors. I also understand The Great Outdoors organizers are not required, nor should it be assumed that they are CPR/First Aid/Wilderness Survival Certified and I am responsible for my safety. Your RSVP indicates the release of liability as indicated in the Liability Waiver above.

The majority of our events are hiking events, that allow old and new residents to enjoy the great outdoors and scenic areas around the Triangle area.

Why join THOG?

We know there are several outdoor groups in the Triangle area to choose from. When you join THOG you are joining the BEST group in the Carolinas. Our volunteer board consists of some of the most experienced and knowledgeable individuals in the Triangle area.

1) Experience counts! We were the first Meetup-based hiking group in the Carolinas and have hosted over 3000+ events since our inception. We are now in our 10th year of operation and continue to lead the way by providing unique and innovative events for our members!

2) Member exclusives! Throughout the calendar year, we offer events that are only available to THOG members. Events include workshops and hikes on private property where we have secured permission in advance!

3) Most importantly, we have great members who are fun and adventurous but also safety conscious and responsible.

We are an INDEPENDENT group and are not associated or affiliated with any other hiking or outdoor groups. In other words, there are other groups that claim to be like THOG, but they are not! On rare occasions, we will co-host events with other groups, but these will be clearly identified on the THOG site.

What THOG is not ...

- THOG is not a singles group and those looking to join THOG for the sole purpose of finding dates will be disappointed. (* On a serious note, if you are on the receiving end of unwanted advances, harassing e-mails or stalking behaviors, please let us know by contacting a Volunteer or Organizer)

- THOG does not condone or engage in careless, reckless or irresponsible activities or behaviors.

We expect that members will do their socializing on the trail, at camp, or on the water! Thus, you won't find social mixers, dining events or parties on our site. What you will find are some of the most unique outdoor adventures in the Triangle area. Whether its hiking, bicycling, zip-lining, backpacking, rafting, kayaking, snow skiing, snowshoeing, or camping, we've likely done it!

We are a VOLUNTEER based group and do not collect ANY fees or dues. Volunteers and organizers are selected based on their experience and commitment to the group. We require prospective volunteers and organizers to attend a minimum of 3 events prior to consideration for such positions.
