NJ Beginner Adult Musician's Meetup and Rehearsal

Marlton, NJ

NJ Beginner Adult Musician's Meetup and Rehearsal
This is in the planning phase as of June 2024. Please sign up for the group if interested. We'd like to make active use of Meetup.com's messaging boards for this group to organize, but will resort to an email list or facebook group if needed. I would love if one or two people would volunteer to co-host. My name is Shimi Halperin, I have a small home studio in Marlton NJ (Greater Philly, next to Cherry Hill, Central NJ). I am learning keys and am participating in School of Rock's adult program. I'm hoping to host a fairly regular music meetup for beginners. Here's the vision: * Open, inclusive, drug, and alcohol free. Centered on positivity, and supporting the learning process. Open to adults 18+. * We will have an ongoing discussion about what tunes to work on. PDFs will be distributed before hand. These will focus on simplified chord charts, easy to read melodies...etc. * The expectation would be that you try to get comfortable with the chords beforehand, and maybe the melody or scale that the tune is in so that you can improvise a little. It's OK to sit out a tune that you are having trouble with, or just play the root notes of the chords. * Improvisation and developing the capacity to play by ear will be encouraged. * This will be a "silent" jam session. You must be able to plug into a mixer. * We might support the rehearsal with drum loops or backing tracks. It's useful to have the computer carry the tune so we can all relax. (we will experiment with this) * There will probably be about 4 positions for musicians, I am visualizing about 6-8 people max per meetup. We might be able to accommodate partners or friends who just want to come and listen / be supportive as long as it doesn't get out of control. * There will be some minimal cost to the meetup (on the order of $10-$20), this is to encourage people to show up when they RSVP and to try to cover some of the cost of the Meetup.com hosting subscription and some sodas/snacks. Nobody will be turned away by inability to pay. * I am also envisioning some kind of zoom session to get together to plan the rehearsals and potentially to have talks on learning, theory, production...etc. If you have other ideas or ideas for tunes I am totally open. I am also a mindfulness geek only recently realizing that I kind of like other people :) A lot of us lost social skills during the pandemic. My general philosophy is "weird is good", and there won't be any pressure put on having great social skills. Just come hang out and play with enough room for other people to hear themselves and occasionally take a solo. We might have a communication agreement and come up with a code of conduct that allows people to move forward and step back in speaking and in playing so that we can give enough room for everyone to have a voice or to just listen.
