It's better Outdoors
Here is the 2024 annual email for those that may not have received it or are new to the group and didn't get the email blast: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MN1Vs4gPeUfZ9wMXpXAOmj_84s9gIeBK9XaH_doCUYY/edit?usp=sharing This is a group for anyone that loves to adventure outdoors and wants to do it with other people, even if they are complete strangers. If you like to hike, camp, raft, ski, board, travel and other activities this is THE group for you. If you're only looking for happy hours, this isn't the group for you, this is NOT a singles group. We plan happy hours now and then to get the members of the group together in social settings to discuss future adventures - some good plans can be made over a beer or two. And all good adventures end with a drink! It's better with someone else... It's better with beer/drinks... It's Better Outdoors... Come join us! Our motto is : "We don't talk quietly, hike slowly, go to bed early or only have just one drink" Please make sure to read the Waiver (General Release of Liability). By joining the group you accept the policy decribed here:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x-HMpzi-4XKZPa-7XTk-nQIa-v0CwZj5kgehs7mSnGw/edit?usp=sharing Note: this is NOT a beginners group and events are typically geared towards those with some experience usually at an intermediate or advanced level depending on the event - ie: we don't hike slow and don't do short hikes Please make sure you also read the 'What is expected of you' as described here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1C3oqyau0EjNVnHyKoc1DH0fi5PmLlB7wVH4-eSykZUg/edit?usp=sharing Joining the group also means you're ok with being photographed during adventures - we always take pics: for the memories and for promotion of future events (we can't always accommodate a 'no photo' request) This is a real meetup group, this is NOT a business nor am I promoting a business and I do not promote businesses. If you see an event posted that means that I will be there to meet you, greet you, do the activity with you and have a drink with you during or afterwards. We are also not a networking group and do not tolerate solicitation of members. We welcome anyone in their 20s - 50s of any gender, race or nationality. But please email the event organizer first if you want to bring a dog...sometimes they are ok and sometimes not. Historic St. George's Social Activities

Philadelphia, PA

Historic St. George's Social Activities
Learn new skills and enjoy social activities! At some meetings, we will play games or enjoy live music. At other meetings, we will teach each other different skills that we know. Let's socialize together and develop individually and collectively! Events organized by the Historic St. George's Museum & Archives. Through these events and programs, we hope to keep HSG active in the community, to help ensure the continued preservation of these important historic buildings. **Background about the HSG buildings:** **HSG is a Heritage Landmark of The United Methodist Church, a registered site in the National Register of Historic Places, a pending site for National Historic Landmark status and a part of the Independence National Historical Park.** The Historic St. George’s Preservation Society was established in 2013 to preserve, restore and maintain Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church’s buildings, collections and grounds and to perpetuate the interpretation of its unique place in American history. Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church (HSG) is the oldest house of Methodist worship in continuous use in America and its national significance is derived from the many notable developments in early American Methodism that occurred at HSG. It also has significance to the early history of Philadelphia as a place that was connected to many key historical events that took place over the last 250 years. Currently, HSG holds the records of hundreds of closed churches, many which were established in Philadelphia in the 18th and 19th centuries. The HSG archives also contain photographs, letters, journals, vital records and other documents related to early Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania. In the 1920s, the first draft of plans for the Benjamin Franklin Bridge called for the bridge to go through the HSG buildings, as well as St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church across the street. Leaders and members of HSG successfully lobbied for the bridge plans to be altered, and the bridge was then built just 14 feet from the church. These actions by HSG saved not only the HSG buildings, but also St. Augustine's, both of which are now included in the National Register of Historic Places. We are trained by the best and continue to train & train others. We are Veterans' supporting Veteran's, Active-duty Service Members, Reserve, Retired & Family Members & \* Open to The General Public nonmilitary or non-prior service members as well, Group/Club. \*** **In doing so calling for \*\*Safety 1st\*\* alongside Proper Education\*.** Hiking is one of the best outdoor activities ever, and it can change your life. It's perfect for beginners to average hikers & adventurist to professionals, who want to explore the great outdoors regardless of their abilities or age\*\*. **It can be immensely rewarding, and the one thing you will regret is that you didn't join this Club/Group sooner.\*\*** In this Club/Group, you will find everything you need to start hiking, from packing essentials to how to prepare for a day hike. With a little planning, you can enjoy a safe, comfortable and pleasurable hike. You will also **be able to achieve all levels & maintain the highest levels within this club or keep up on your certifications or get new ones.** Hiking is a fun, relaxing way to experience the great outdoors with friends and family. When you go on a hike, you get to explore places in nature that the roads cannot reach. Leave your worries about time, work and other stressors far behind and reawaken your sense of wonder. There is nothing like reconnecting with friends or loved ones on a journey through nature. **We organize and provide all sorts of hikes and adventures for anyone who wants them. From groups to the average person. If you wanted something specific, please let us know & we can arrange such events or training.** If you’ve never hiked before, you might feel intimidated by the idea. Maybe you’re concerned you’re not in shape to hike. Perhaps you’re worried you’ll get lost and won’t be able to find your way back. **Rest assured — In this Club/Group there is a hike out there for everyone.** **Hiking is not a race to the finish line, but a low-impact workout that is about enjoying good company and immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.** Hiking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the outdoors. Transported by your own two feet and carrying just what you need for the day on your back, you can discover the beauty of nature at whatever pace you’re comfortable with. ***(Note: Trails and/or hiking sites are also available to the disabled and/or those with disabilities, there are many places that can accommodate you if that is applicable to you. For more information on that please reach out to us and/or your local park officials.)*** In general, spending time outside is great for our physical and mental health. The beneficial effects of hiking on your body and mind are indisputable and have been proven by many studies. Regardless of whether you go hiking Routeburn Track or Laguna de Los Tres, or any place else it will be an extraordinary experience if done the right way. **Hiking is not a competition; It's all about you and nature. Personally, we love hiking, and we never try to miss a good hike wherever we go.** You don't need to practice hiking for years to be able to get to the finish line of the trail **it’s not a race**!. So, you can basically start hiking instantly. However, it makes a lot of sense to take things slowly at first to avoid common hiking mistakes. The best way to get into hiking is to start walking on a daily basis, as jumping head first into hikes such as Laguna 69 or Laguna Cerro Castillo can bring you quickly back to earth. **There is no shame in choosing shorter and easier trails, so make sure to get into the hiking gradually.** Also, you can start carrying a heavier backpack so you can feel what it's like when actually hiking with all your gear. You should also test not just your skills but also your gear. You can take a shower while wearing your new rain jacket and rain pants to see how much rain it can resist. For first hikes, you don't need some super fancy daypack. However, soon enough, you will understand that a proper daypack can make or break your trip. **We want you to know where you are and where you’re going at all times**, but we also want you to know where all the campsites, emergency exits, water sources and rest areas are located. **The American Hiking Society recommends bringing along a map or compass — even if you have a GPS as a backup (The GPS is a backup not a map or compass!)** In this Club, we share everything we know about hiking and walking outdoors that we learned throughout the years\*\*. We provide training and certifications so you can get the most of your hike!\*\* National, State and local, parks offer a wide range of hiking trails to accommodate different hiking skills and capabilities. You won’t miss out on the spectacular views, wildlife sightings, and connection with nature by choosing an easier trail for your adventure. **Don’t overestimate your abilities.** **Your safety is your responsibility while hiking anyplace**. Planning and training are an important step in being prepared and ready for your adventure. If you are going to the backcountry, know how to be self-sufficient in case you encounter an unexpected hazard or an emergency occurs. If you have never planned a trip or a hike. We offer all sorts of training for example selecting the **Ten Essentials**, **Preparing your Trip Plan**, and **Emergency Planning**. Don't miss out on these important things to help prepare you for an emergency! We offer training for our members listed above and below but not limited to: **Leave a Trip Plan**. Complete a trip plan that details where you will be walking or hiking, your contact information, when you plan to arrive and return, and who is coming with you. Leave this information with a trusted friend or family member that is not going on the trip with you. The details in this document can be very helpful to search and rescue teams in the case of an emergency. **Have an Emergency Plan.** Develop an emergency plan for what to do if you or your hiking companions becomes lost or injured. Consider learning CPR and basic wilderness first aid, especially if you’re planning to hike in the backcountry. **(We offer training & certification on CPR and basic wilderness first aid)** **Have a way to communicate.** \***Do not depend on your cell phone\*** because **Your cell phone is not a light** **source,** **it’s not a map or compass**, **it’s not a survival kit,** **it’s not always going to have cell coverage, they can break, batterie's fail etc.!** **Be weather-ready.** Check the weather before you head out on your hike. If conditions in the Hike are not ideal, don’t take the chance! Be prepared to seek shelter if you encounter severe weather, know what to do in case of lightning or flash flooding. Have your rain equipment packed and ready. **Take your time and watch your step**. Be careful and watch where you are walking, especially on slippery areas or near cliffs. Stick to dry paths and solid rock areas with good footing. **Ask a Ranger.** All of our hikes are Department of parks approved. We are in contact all the time with officials’ and/or ask the rangers about conditions in the places before we head out on our hike. We are aware if there are park closures or alerts that are in effect. They are always very helpful and supportive and we support them as well. We do everything possible to help them and adhere to whatever they are communicating and/or putting out there. As well as sharing that with our member's and the public. We encourage our members to do the same with us or the general public so we all stay up to date or are aware of new things being put out there by the Rangers and/or such officials agencies etc. **Pick the right trail for you and your group. Recognize your abilities and the abilities of your group.** While trails and circumstances for hiking change with the weather, **ALL hikers have this constant** **\- They Control Their Own Judgment\, Knowledge\, and Experience\.** **There is no excuse for lack of knowledge when hiking associations are easy to find as joining this club.** We are providing volumes of information training and legitimate certifications about safe hiking. **\*Keen judgment comes with experience, but ignoring the potential for danger is what makes hikers statistics rather than story tellers. \*** **On our hikes we focus on the need to pick trails that everyone can successfully complete & enjoy safely in all categories of hiking. We assure that proper structuring of hikes occurs to accommodate everyone.** **We understand the correct methods of determining the pace.** \*\*We understand why it’s important that group organizers or hike leaders, hikers. Receive proper information, training, get certified & comply with, "Leave No Trace" on the amount of people they bring or allow to attend on a hike. And obeying any laws or permitting processes or procedures. \*\* **We** **are offering and doing serious training and/or legitimate recognized certifications.** **For the Hike Leaders Certification** (we are offering) t**he \*Prerequisites Required are\*\***   -CPR/AED certification -Wilderness First Aid certification -Wilderness/Land Navigation experience - Must be fluent in map and compass skills -Wilderness Survival experience - Must be competent in all four elements of survival (Fire, Shelter, Water, Food) -Leave No Trace awareness certification – We take hiking & such things very serious\*\*.\*\* **While most of us don’t intend to harm our natural surroundings, we may not know how to preserve them, or we’re simply overlooking a few important behaviors**. \*In this Club/Group hiking is NOT a huge party event. With a agenda to get the largest amount of people on a hike at the same time, place or location or pact. **Everyone's priority must be safety, obeying any laws, rules. Caring about the hiking environment, leave no trace, trails or our forestry is always the priority!** \*\*Our hikes or hikers are NOT on some ego trip! Our Club/Group is NOT focused on a desire to be some sort of popularity club by getting the most people on a hike at the same time! Based on some miles by hour nonsense or improper rating of the hike to bolster ill informed egos! And lack of proper training or even Prerequisites Required above because of the lack of taking time to do so!\*\*\* *If that's what your basing joining this or any hiking Club/Group and/or are focused on as the priority, this is not the club for you! **We don't do those things.** Our goals are not to organize a hike with the largest amount of people on a trail at the same time! **Its to accommodate all hikers on various properly structured hikes** so all can benefit while implementing "leave no trace" & obeying the rules & laws.* **We implement basic principles of outdoor ethics such things as: Visit in small groups. Split larger parties into smaller groups, Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy. (Leave no trace.)** We understand such things and we do them. And ask you to please be careful of what groups you join or are supporting, some are destroying the very places we all like to hike, to satisfy egos! To satisfy egos they destroy the ecological systems of the very places they are leading groups or hikes at while putting themselves and others at risk! Because of ignorance ,\* not taking the time to do basic training and/or get certified. Or offering such things to their leadership or members. **We are offering proper legitimate certifications for all. We call on you to share with others the things mentioned & learned.** In addition, we understand demographic inequity issues with regard to outdoor recreation pursuits, particularly during the pandemic, meriting greater focus on this important social justice issue. Why these inequities continue to exist. That informed strategies and policies that promote equal opportunities and access to outdoor recreation, for all must occur. We are active in employing additional and new ways to encourage diverse demographics so all can enjoy outdoor recreation. **Which the laws clearly address in special use permits as activities that provide a benefit to an individual, group or organization rather than the public at large. Because it puts a strain on the parks staffing, facilities, parking areas available, ecological wellness etc.** Park’s wilderness are managed using standards that were developed to measure the health of natural resources and to determine the number of encounters people considered desirable and acceptable while experiencing wilderness. These two standards are combined with existing management zones to create overall use limits and group size limits. The use limits are evaluated each year, and may change as conditions warrant. **Like it or not when someone or groups violates that by organizing hikes or hiking in large groups it has large impacts on the local ecosystems! And it prevents the majority of the public from accesses to such places!** **If you’re looking for a dating club to pick up women or men this is not the club for you!** We like meeting new people, having fun together and have no problem with people connecting with each other however \***This is not a dating service it’s a Club/Group that does hiking and all sorts of Adventure’s. \*** **If you want to be in or a part of a Club/Group that cares about or provides training on permitting processes, special written permission’s, special uses permit or requirements, then this is the Club/Group for you or that Club/Group**! **We care about such things and we do them!** **If you have some attitude about your hiking abilities or wanted to rate others & take hiking as a joke or timed race, rated by some bogus mph rating or some other bogus trail or hiking rating system**! And don’t take hiking serious & by having such attitude’s, it impairs ones thinking that doing such things is safe on the trail, **think again**! **The Centers for Disease Control has reported the third most common source of injury in the wild outdoors is hiking, second only to snowboarding and sledding**. **\*Sadly, such attitudes correlate with the reasons the NPS cites as contributing factors to rescue operations which cost the NPS over $5 million dollars each year many who are DOA!\*** *( We have a classes available on how such attitudes are getting hikers killed. )* **Its not altitudes that's getting hikers killed it their attitudes & lack of training.** \*NPS is just one of many agencies reporting such statistics\* **(We offer classes how to properly classify a hike.)** If you’re going to RSVP for an event or training then decide not show up or are looking to see if some cute girl or guy is going, then if they don’t you don’t show up last minute. This is not the club for you! **If you’re not looking to do those things then read on.** **If you RSVP and something comes up change your status ASAP, if we see that someone RSVP's & don't change their RSVP status or let us know when they will not attend or reach out to us afterwards. Such people will be suspended & expelled.** *Its a common curtesy to change your RSVP status and we will not tolerate folks RSVP then being a no call no show etc. If you RSVP you need to add it to your calendar or reminder and should know what the dates, times, location's etc. are. We understand within reason things happen however with modern technology its not that difficult to let the Scheduling Department know your status all hikes or events have a point of contact in them.* **\*\*Want to know more about navigation?** **Wildlife first aid?** **Emergency response?** **Taking a single or multi-day course can help ensure you’re equipped to respond to backcountry emergency situations.** **Check out these courses we are providing as well as different courses available to our members:** **Navigation Classes** **Wilderness First Aid** **Wilderness First Responder Training**   **\*\*\*Additional Information/ rules and Disclaimer**   https://1drv.ms/w/s!Arr0XIm3I500gZJgaJJKWhEEqvhzJw?e=hPxme4   **\*\*By becoming a MEMBER and/or joining on a Hike you acknowledge you read the information provided in the link above.
