Japanese Ju-Jitsu in the Lehigh Valley, PA
**Welcome to our Japanese Ju-Jitsu Meetup!**   We are dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive space where all individuals are welcomed, respected, and valued. Our group aims to create an empowering environment for everyone - regardless of your background or identity. Join us to learn some basic skills in Japanese Ju-Jitsu, meet and socialize with new people, and have fun! **What can explore a martial art do for you?** * Self-confidence * Self-discipline * Fitness * Attentiveness * Respect for others * Inclusion * Moral courage * ... **What is Ju-Jitsu?** Ju-Jitsu is modern self-defense. "The “Gentle Art” or “Art of Suppleness” (this is the meaning of ju-jitsu in Japanese) does not neutralize power with power but aims to rationally absorb an attack and convert that energy to the opponent’s own detriment. So it is designed to defend you with a flexible reaction on violence." If you're interested to find out more, browse the website of the Ju-Jitsu International Federation: www.jjif.sport **What can you expect?** Please be aware that this is an outdoor activity. We will engage in sportive activities with elements of cardio, strength, stability, and, of course, Ju-Jitsu techniques. Ju-Jitsu is a contact sport, so expect to engage in physical contact with other members. It's important to note that everyone has different physical capabilities and levels of comfort. Therefore, an open dialog between members when engaging in Ju-Jitsu is crucial. **Do you have to have experience in Ju-Jitsu?** No. The focus is on fitness, socializing, and having fun while learning elements of Ju-Jitsu. You train at your own pace and comfort level. You can choose which exercises you participate in and which ones you don't. **What do you need to bring?** * Wear activewear & sneakers that you feel comfortable and can move freely in * A yoga mat (unless you want to use the grass as your mat) * Water (to hydrate) * If you wear glasses, you might want to consider wearing contact lenses or sport goggles **What are the key differences between Japanese Ju-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? ([Source](https://www.japanesemartialartscenter.com/learnmore-jujutsu-in-ann-arbor-vs-bjj))** ***A. Origins*** * Japanese Ju-Jitsu (JJJ) ‒ Originating in Japan as one of the first martial arts, JJJ came from samurai hand-to-hand combat. The idea was that samurai could defend themselves with Ju-Jitsu when their weapons were destroyed or lost. * Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) ‒ BJJ actually comes from Judo, not Ju-Jitsu. Followers of JJJ adapted the martial art into judo and taught it around the world. In the early 1900s, judo teacher Mitsuyo Maeda taught Judo in Brazil. One of his students was Carlos Gracie, who then created the style of BJJ. ***B. Moves*** * JJJ ‒ Throws, joint locks, chokes, kicks, and strikes are all moves used in JJJ. The main goal is to use strength and momentum against your opponent to overpower them. Ju-Jitsu is more about analyzing your opponent’s moves and quickly finding a way to bring them down. One hard throw could be enough to keep them down, unlike BJJ, where you hold down your opponent. * BJJ ‒ Consisting mostly of grappling, BJJ takes place primarily on the ground, with the goal to force submission onto the opponent. By using leverage and grip, moves like chokes and strangles make the opponent give up. ***C. Purpose*** * JJJ is used as a form of self-defense, fitness, and personal development. * BJJ is mostly used as a competitive sport. Moves like submissions or dominant positions earn you points and determine a winner. **Important:** This is not a paid class or club. This is a purely social group engaging in sportive activities. Your attendance is voluntary, at your own risk, and free of charge. A waiver (link will be provided in each scheduled event, or print-outs will be made available at the time of the event) must be signed before attending each event. **About me:** My name is Tim. I moved from Germany to the Lehigh Valley in early 2020, and now want to get involved in my community by teaching some basic Ju-Jitsu skills and bringing people together. I started doing Ju-Jitsu in Germany in 1998, but haven't gotten back into it in the States yet. To this day, I'm still a member of my home club [Ju Jutsu Club Peine e.V.](www.jjc-peine.de), even if I don't get to train there anymore. I was a member of my club's training team training adults and kids for many years, as well as of the board organizing training and social events. Outside of my club, I was a referee for the Ju-Jitsu Fighting System, and head referee of my home state for six years, supporting this beautiful sport in Germany. Question?
